Bitbaby - Part 1 (My Original Short Stories)steemCreated with Sketch.

Debbie could hardly contain her excitement. The arduous and painful process of gifting new life into this world was a distance memory as the veritable fruits of her labour were cradled within her pale, slender arms. She looked into the tiny glistening jet black sapphires staring back at her. A petite bundle of flesh and bone, untouched or tainted by society or it's values. The first page of an empty book ready to be inked out in what was to be an unfolding epic saga of emotion and discovery. Motionless, he laid there wrapped in his blanket, taking in the features and contours of the face that would in time prove to be his unifying point of solitude, shelter and undying love. For an instant, a glorious future flashed past her mind’s eye.

The maternity room door opened with a hushed silence as a lady dressed in a colourful frock and feathered hat crept in. She carried a brown paper bag filled to the brim with an assortment of fruit as well as a folded newspaper tucked under one armpit. ”How’s the little family union coming along?” she asked, baring a large toothy smile.

Debbie returned the warm acknowledgement. ”Just fine, Sarah. Thank you for the fruit though you really shouldn't have. Would you mind placing them on the table near the window?”

“Of course. I searched in three of our local stores to find the ripest one’s for you and our beautiful new addition. The strawberries are so juicy, you have to try them.”

Debbie pursed her lips. ”Later if that’s OK, Sarah. I’m still getting acquainted with the little one.”

She rushed over to the bed after placing the contents of the bag in a neat formation upon the wooden top. The overcast gloom through the large windows did little to dampen the joy in the hospital room. ”Oh, he’s so adorable!” she cooed whilst waving a playful finger in front of them both. The newly born flitted his gaze this way and that attempting to keep up with the interesting new object that had just invaded his field of vision. A look of curiosity slowly made it’s way upon his face.

”Yes, he certainly is. I can't get over the fact he's finally here.” Debbie whispered, beaming at the sight of her son's intrigue.

”Oh, he’s just too cute. I can already see he has his father's eyes.”

The mood in the room dropped faster than Sarah had time to think. Debbie looked up at her with a blank glare, tears already starting to well.

”I’m sorry, Deb.” She mumbled with a sorrowful pout. ”I didn’t mean to… What I meant to say was....”

”It’s alright.” asserted Debbie. ”There’s a time to wallow in one’s own self-pity and then another to step up to the mark and put your priorities in order.” She looked back down at the soft, warm package nestled below her. ”My James needs me now. He’s all I have in this world and nothing will ever take precedence over that. Not even my own inner demons. They'll have to finish their tussle without me as the intermediary.” Managing to raise a hand to his brow without shifting her arm, she stroked his forehead tenderly and muttered under her breath. ”Brandon is gone. Believe it or not, I’ve accepted that. Now I’ve got two roles to fill in his life. I realize this fact only too well. That’s the card I was dealt and that’s what I fully intend to do to the best of my abilities.”

Sarah could see the concealed pain hidden away amongst a confusing tangle of mixed emotions and thought it best to nip this in the bud as soon as possible to avoid further mistaken utterances. ”Well, if you need a shoulder or ear, I’ll always be there for you. Please never forget that.”

The resonance of her words was felt by Debbie. She knew the truth contained within them, not being just some passing comment made simply to pacify the situation. Their thirty-something year friendship had helped forge an unbreakable and solid foundation that was capable of weathering the harshest of storms. She was also well aware of the forthcoming support Sarah would offer up per her new lifestyle and was never short of appreciation for it.

”You know, when someone you love passes on, they seem to fade in and out of memory as time pushes on.” said Debbie. ”It’s the little things they did that you try to hold on to. The small details of the connections you had with that person. It’s been seven months now and already I’m barely clinging on to these scraps of information. Like a movie being played out of sequential order. The familiar sound of his footsteps coming through the door after a hard day’s work, the way he’d rub my shoulders knowing how tired I would feel on many an occasion. He understood me, Sarah… And I can’t ever let those recollections go. I refuse to. I won’t.”

Sarah pulled a packet of tissues from her pocket and wiped away the tears as and when they appeared. I must admit, Debbie. I’ve never had to deal with anything like that before, but I’m sure time will prove the ultimate healer. You’ll get through this, girl. You still got me, remember?”

There was a moment of brief silence as the two friends contemplated what to say next. Debbie was first to break the thin veil of ice. ”Thank you, Sarah” she said, grasping her companion’s wrist with a free hand whilst supported the baby with the other. ”I know you won’t let me down. But I’m serious about what I said. The fragility of the mind and life itself. Death puts a new perspective on everything. The finite state of our surroundings and how we ourselves will one day become someone else's memory. That is one constant in this world that you can be sure will eventually come to be. Decay is an integral part of the foundation of our genes. But things have changed and now technology has caught up with biology. So I’ve decided to go ahead with it. That is my final decision.”

Sarah opened her eyes wide with a new and anxious worry. ”We’ve talked about this at length, Deb. The possible implications and ramifications. Are you absolutely…”

”Don’t change my mind, Sarah. I beg of you. For the first times in ages I see things clearly now. Maybe more than I ever have done before.” She placed a palm upon the soft, delicate flesh of her tiny saving grace. His round cheeks were warm to the touch and those shimmering beads studied her with an almost other-worldly fascination.

”Yes, my little heart-throb. After the operation, your life will be better than you could ever have imagined.”

good to see you back!

And how great to see a comment from you... Much appreciated, buddy. :)

Welcome back, sir.

Good to be back, bro. And even better to be greeted by a familiar and awesome steemian.

Thanks for the comment and hopefully all is good on your side. :)

You're welcome. Still surviving :-)

Hey @ezzy, its been a while. Glad you are still posting.

Hey, buddy. Time certainly flies but it's good to see the same great people are still here. Bless you, my friend. :)

OH YEAH!! My bro returned to form! I have to say, you haven't missed a beat. It's your distinct style that really sets your writing apart. I like how you set this up. The conversation flowed smoothly and the characterization was built like an onion. Layers and layers full of mystery being unfolded with every line. In a brief time, you've already set up such a rich and engrossing world. Does this belong in the same universe as The Symbiotic Protocol?

That hook at the end.. man. Novel or short story, you really put on a master class every time you post. I knew that your time away was just a ruse to get these gems aged to perfection. Welcome back, my bro! :D

Aww, man. I'm pretty much embarrassed right now. The amount of time I've spent away and to return to an awesome comment like that from you. I feel I don't deserve it in the least, but am truly honoured to see it. Thanks, my friend... Really.

This story is just a setup (prologue, maybe?) for an upcoming sci-fi novella I've got planned. Thought I'd throw the idea out there and see the reaction. All will be explained in the next and final part. Then it's back to finish up on the long overdue "The Symbiotic Protocol".

Bless, my brother... Thanks for literally making my day.

Brother, never feel embarrassed about that. You were a huge part in acclimating me back, so I am forever grateful for what you did. The least I could do is to return the favor. Will all your friends on here, I'm sure I'm not the only one who'll welcome you back with arms wide open.

Looking at the earnings this post already has, I'm correct when I said that you haven't missed a beat! :D I like how you're crossing the two stories over, even if they're not connected. You're setting it up in a way that you will never run out of things to post. It's funny how my story has almost caught up with The Symbiotic Protocol in terms of chapters. Although... it's way way behind in terms of earnings haha!

Thanks for the warm welcome, man. You're a true gem on Steemit. Believe me when I say I'm lucky and feel privileged that the people who voted for me did so, especially after being away for so long.

But I've always thought you deserved way more in terms of payout, just my personal opinion. Your writing style and effort to create the awesome work you do speaks volumes and I commend you for that. Please keep pushing, you WILL get the earnings due to you. It may be taking a little longer than we'd all like, but it will happen. Keep the faith, man. Your fan base needs you.

Really though, I think the people who missed you just pressed pause. That's why when you came back it's like nothing has changed :)

Yeah, that's okay. We get what we get, no use in me fretting over what I can't control :) I did try reaching out to more people, it's just that not a lot took the effort to read my posts. They were busy with their own posts, I guess :) I'm just so happy to stumble upon all the people that returned the support though! :D I wouldn't trade you guys for anyone else in the world!

And that there is what makes you so integral to the Steemit community. It's hard to come by such an inspiring and commited person as yourself. Man, why the hell was I away so long? Keep pushing, man. You're too talented to be anywhere else. Steemit needs you! :)

Haha! If only more people felt that way. In any case, I've all but given up trying to convince people, and just decided to keep doing what I'm doing. Admittedly, as it is, I'm about as loyal to the community as it is to me, which is not a lot hahaha! Even if this whole Steemit thing doesn't work out for me, I'm just glad that I've made a few friends that would easily outlive my time on this platform.

I pray that it does work out for you and you go on from strength to strength. I view you as a valuable asset to the platform so please stick around. You will be sorely missed if you leave and from what I can see, you've got a nice following already! :)

I just discovered your blog. How original! I will follow and check out your stories.

Thanks very much, @bart2305! How very kind of you to say! :)

Did I mention I was excited you were back? LOL. And what a tremendous come back it is! You managed to awe me with birth, bring out sympathy for her loss, and intrigue me with a fantastic hook, all in a few pages!
Excellent my friend, so glad you're here!!

Wow. I tell you, it's incredible how reading the kind words of people you hold dear to you, can make you feel. I'm so glad I'm in the company of friends again.

Bless you, @dreemit and thanks for the awesome comments.

Great story telling! I do look forward to reading more from you.

Thanks very much, @wymark. Much appreciated. :)

You have quite the supportive audience bro! Congrats on making such an impacting return, so glad to see you are getting your well deserved due acknowledgements and appreciation. I just finished @dreemit's first novel, as well as @jedau's and now I shall be checking out all of your new stories this week.
So glad to start catching up with you bro.
-aka @verbal-d

Keep up the great work, so glad to see you here more often

Hey buddy!

Thanks so much for saying so! I missed all you guys a lot but was so overjoyed when I saw your collaboration with @jedau and his novel. Match made in heaven, my bro! Through your unique musical style, you really captured the essence of the narrative. I was so impressed.

The mind boggles at how much original material is still yet to be unleashed from within your mind. Look forward to many more nuggets of pure greatness from the awesome @verbal-d, now @peacemaker! :)

You're very welcome bro, I am looking forward to reading your new stuff this week. I'll try and catch a post or two tonight. Were you writing me on @rea's account? I forgot to reply on it, and maybe it was an accident because sometimes I forget to switch accounts from my wife's account @happyharmonymay where she posts pictures of our daughter Harmony and son Marcello.

But yeah thanks bro, the collaboration with jedau was a special one. I can't wait to share more music and literature soon. You won't have to wait too long bro

Lol, sorry man. @rea is my missus and she posts regularly. My apologies. But yeh, that was indefinably my reply! :)

Again, loving your work and cannot wait to hear more. Actually, I was searching for this crazy track you came up with. I think it starts where you and Harmony are singing Happy Birthday at the start but I forget the title. Anyways, it just gives me an excuse to run through your entire great selection once again. :)

it's all good bro! like i said, sometimes i do the same thing with my wife's account lol

oh thanks for bringing that up bro, that song is called Marvelous Matriarch :) the song I dedicated to my mom for her birthday :)
indeed, enjoy all those tracks bro, I'll be sharing more soon as always , your support is priceless

Thanks, buddy. :)

You're welcome bro!

Wonderfully written bro. Reading this as I am holding my 8 month old son Marcello and I can definitely relate to the deep sentiments you have touched on. So glad I finally have time to sit down and catch up on your work. Our future collaboration has so much potential with all of our creative original literary skills. You talked to @jedau about it already right?

Thanks, my bro! Again, coming from an artist as brilliant as you, that's the highest compliment I can possibly receive. Everything you touch seems to turn to gold. I heard the track you recorded for @jedau's awesome novel. You have a way with sound as he does with words! I haven't yet had a chance to speak to @jedau in the chat area yet. What is the future collaboration, bro?

You're very welcome, and thanks bro, I also made a song for @dreemit's novel called Shadow Mandala, you have to check that one out and let me know what you think.
Long story short, I believe the collaboration for all of us is like writing about the same character but all in our own finesse and perspective, like multidimensional perspective. I write about the supernatural spiritual realm with demons and angels, tying in my faith for that person, you handle the technological futuristic and now military aspect of that person, jedau goes for the fantastical adventurous perspective, and dreemit incorporates monsters, ghouls, and mythical folklore into her scenarios and situations. I think it would be a crazy good collaboration. We def have to figure out this one, I write fast so you should message jedau and dreemit and speak them about it as well. Let me know what you think

Very interesting , man. You're right about how we all cover such diverse content. I'll check up on Steemit chat regularly through the day and surely will bump into @jedau there. So much potential in this platform, it's defies logic.

(p.s. I'll defo check out "Shadow Mandala". You're the undisputed king of lyrics and beats. Still can't believe you created such an array of beautiful and amazing tracks).

Thanks bro, and yeah I was thinking about our collar again, I really think we could create something great if we put our minds together, the concept sounds uniquely intriguing and I haven't seen anyone do something like this before on steemit.

And prepare yourself for a world venture with Shadow Mandala broooo I appreciate all your support and time truly

Absolutely my pleasure, bro. Your works can compete on a global scale. That's just the plain truth. Let's see what we can all come up with :)

Thank you always for the amazing compliments bro, I look forward to it!
