Moving between absolute thrills and deadly boredom - sounds familiar? Then you might need a little exercise in finding middle ground - a nice resolution for 2018.

Today I would like to invite you to some brain exercise and to introduce you to one of my favorite methods

"The square of values".

It's nice not only to work with clients but also on your own, when it comes to a particular difficulty that you will encounter in your life again and again. For example, if you are accused of being too "naive " or if you are exaggerated about helping others. If, for example, my family, friends and colleagues keep reminding me of a similar effect or behaviour that causes problems, I should not be resistant to criticism, but rather be able to get to the bottom of things.

Of course facing the beginning of a New Year you are full of good intentions. ... No, what? You gave that up already? Bummer. For everybody who still believes that one can change bad habits: follow me:)

How does that work? And how can I make a learning task out of it, without making a long and wide extension?

"Simple." I orientate myself on the square of values after Friedemann Schulz von Thun:

Unfortunately there is no English translation in Wikipedia for explaining the method. So I took over:

The square of values originating from Nicolai Hartmann (1926) was used by Friedemann Schulz von Thun in 1989 for the interests of interpersonal communication and connected with the idea of development and then called square of values and development.
With the help of the square of values and development, it could be possible to find the necessary counter-quality ("sister virtue") for every human quality (e. g. honesty) (here e. g. tact and sensitivity); only together can both "let the rainbow rise". Honesty without measure can degenerate into brutal openness, measure without honesty into a polite facade. If you have the balance of two values in mind, you can also discover the direction of development: one tends to absolute honesty and must conquer according to tact and sensitivity; the other one exaggerates precisely this quality and should learn to speak honest plain language.
The basic idea of the model is based on Aristotle (ca. 350 B. C.), was further developed by Nicolai Hartmann (1926) and finally borrowed for psychology by Paul Helwig (1936).

Nicomachean Ethics - Character virtues according to Aristotle

Concerned with Mean Excess Deficiency
fear (phobos) Courage (andreia): mean in fear and confidence First Type. Foolhardy or excessive fearlessness; is one who over indulges in fearful activities. Cowardly (deilos): exceeds in fear and is deficient in confidence
confidence (thrasos) Second Type. Rash (thrasus): exceeds in confidence

Quote:
"Those who flee and fear and withstand everything nowhere will become cowardly, but those who fear nothing and go at everything will be foolhardy. Likewise, whoever enjoys every lust and refuses to abstain from any lust becomes immoderate, but who avoids every lust like an uncouth farmer becomes insensitive."

The instrument of the middle determines the character virtues more precisely. For example, the virtue of bravery is a middle ground between vices of daring and cowardice. The basis for virtues are the actions as well as the emotions and desires. Not brave, but foolhardy is someone who is either completely fearless in a particular situation, even though the situation is threatening, or who ignores his fears in a serious threat situation. The middle therefore - here as with the other character virtues - is to have appropriate emotions and to act accordingly. This doctrine from the middle is presumably not to be understood in concrete situations as normative guiding action, but only as a descriptive instrument of character virtues."

quote-source / translated from German to Englisch

In the systemic notion or Gestalt psychology and its holistic view we do not look at a fixed point, but rather develop the idea of a dynamic balance; similarly as we know it from the concept of yin and yang. The value square corresponds to this holistic conception of dynamic processes.

What fits our modern time?

In addition to Aristotle, there is not only "the right middle" between two evil extremes, but the derivation happens through the ideals, the sister qualities and this gives a coherent picture. It is not intended to eradicate something, but rather to show that the exaggeration is only a form of compensation. And even here a positive connotation can be found.

Let's take an example that matches the platform here.

If you hover your finger over your slider and it doesn't tend to move above the 50 percent mark. Somehow, you can't draw on your full potential. Or, if you don't want to exhaust your ten 100% votes as a minnow a day. Then, for example, you realized a problem: that you are a little stingy.

How do you proceed? Who is equal to the miserliness as an antipole in his extremity?
This is.... exactly: the "wastefulness"! These two negative unhealthy "qualities" form the two lower areas.

Now you ask yourself: what is the healthy way to handle money (power)?

The answer in this particular case is "generosity".

Then you investigate the sister virtue of generosity and that would be "thrift".

Sisters of virtue - the matching opposites!

There are now two qualities/virtues side by side. These form the positive tension, i. e. the golden center. If you are able to weigh up these two you have found the optimal way to make people happy.

Incidentally, I would not recommend starting with a difficulty but with a positive intention.

For example, if I asked you which of the virtues you would like to improve: reliability, trustworthiness, devotion - which one would you choose, because in the back of your mind you suspect that you could develop even more in it?

If you choose "devotion", the procedure for the method of the value square is as follows:

You write the word "devotion"in the upper left corner of your sheet.

Use the graph I gave you with the example of "self-trust" as a reminder.

Then you ask yourself: "If I'm now totally overdoing it and doing too much of the good (for example, losing yourself and doing multiple postings a day on Steemit that deprive you of all your energy): Where do you land?

In the "obsession".

You write this word in the lower left corner of your sheet.

The question to be asked would be: In order not to be obsessive, which development direction would you have to take? You would have to learn to be "even-tempered", that is, to let go of constantly and with clenched teeth following the object of your desire.

Starting from the obsession,

you draw a diagonal upwards to the right corner in the shape of a staircase

(I did that in the chart in the beginning of this post as a straight arrow, because I was too lazy).
You ascend this thoughtfully in the direction of "equanimity".

Arriving there, you ask yourself:
"And what if I exaggerate and my serenity is transformed by exaggeration? Where does that take me?

The answer is "indifference".

Now you have completed the square.

  • Devotion = left upper corner
  • Obsession = left bottom corner
  • Equanimity = right upper corner
  • Indifference : right bottom corner

To move within the lower realm is not something one wants to do on purpose.

Bad feelings occur: Nothing is really in such a way that it moves you to surrender, nothing seems worthy to deal with it in depth. There is a negative tension between the two terms below, where you move between "plague" and "cholera".

Just hold on for another minute. Does that feeling sound familiar to you? To move through the day and sway between "enthusiasm" and "leaden fatigue", for example? Then welcome to the club of negative suspense!

I had a young client whom I coached and she told me that she constantly is either stressed or bored. I made a quick drawing of the squares and asked her to find the terms. We were ready in ten minutes and I was able to watch her drop the dime (which is a German expression when it finally "clicks").

Nobody likes to move between extremes. And of course nobody should.

It is not for nothing that Buddhists praise the Way of the Middle and I suspect that the Systemicists also knew about it without necessarily linking it to Asian teachings.

Psychotherapy also always revealed those who treated their patients in the same direction, but they gave other names such as "positive psychotherapie"[1].

Call it the "Weltengeist" (thanks @antikesdenken for this phrase, which hit me yesterday by reading your article) because people all over the world came to the same conclusions without even knowing about one another.

I did the square of values a lot when I was chewing on a certain issue but also when I was in a good mood and just wanted to contemplate about something I was after. Also this is just a simple way to practice systemic thinking. The more often I dig into those little exercises the better I get.

If you like this kind of stuff, take a peace of paper and get started.
It requires some practice and you may make mistakes at the beginning - maybe you won't find the terms right away or the square won't come out logically. But as time goes on, you'll get better. I do this sometimes just for fun.

For me this is like Sudoku but not with numbers. I hope, you are going to have some fun with making your own squares.

Thank you for reading!

:-)

Hi, very interesting, never heard of the square of values before. I'm training to become an art therapist (based on ACT & artistic practise), and in my sessions I use the 'core quadrant' developed by Daniel Ofman, which seems somewhat similar. Was wondering if you know about that, it might even be more helpful to think about qualities and values...

Here an example. The interesting thing about is, is that often your quality is triggered by noticing an allergy in someone else... but that person's allergy might be a value/quality for them... which is very similar in what you describe above, how something that might seem negative is actually leading you to a positive quality...

core-quadrant.jpg

Thanks for this interesting comment. I'll come back to you tomorrow. Having a blast with my family and just didn't want to leave you without a reply. See you tomorrow! :-)

edit:
thank you. I never heard of Daniel Ofman - this concept is very similar to the Schulz von Thun one.
Both try to emphasize that balance is important and once you identified the qualities you come to the exaggeration (allergy) of them. I like the logic of both. Also it is easy to work with them in my profession.

I would like to add to both concepts that dealing with identifications is somehow also a trap. In the Buddhist approach for example there is no such thing than a "core" or "established characteristics" to humans but only momentary events. I find the Eastern psychology and philosophy very appealing and am impressed by the richness and depth of their teachings.

It prevents me from being to much focused on methods and cemented character assignments - you know, when therapists and consultants are too much in love with strategies & methods and not enough in connection with what happens in the moment between client and counsellor.

What I experienced during time in working with clients is that no matter how much I know and educate myself, whenever I inwardly judge my client and find wrongness in him or her it is a matter of a nano second poisoning the atmosphere and working together becomes tough and tenacious.

We all are able to read our minds:)

well, I answered more than I intended.

I absolutely agree with your assessment of the danger of trying to understand and to judge/know what is going on. In my practise (I'm training and soon to be an art therapist) I use the ACT theory (Acceptance & Commitment Theory) that might interest you as well, as it draws from both Western psychology and Buddhist/Eastern knowledge. It focusses on acceptance not as a simply letting it go / not being bothered - but as a truly facing of what is, what is going on, and accepting that it is part of who you are at this moment, and then committing not to an avoidance or short-term resolution, but to the values that you find worth dealing with. I find it interesting when I work with clients that having this attitude myself, protects me from going with judgments about myself, the client, situations, etc.

This was meant to just add something, not seeing things different from you, I think, very nice! Makes me happy to read your words that are so true to me.

So we are walking the same path, don't we? :)

I must admit that it is a very huge challenge and I realize every day that I must practice a lot to achieve this ideal.

"Art therapist" is an interesting term creation. Just yesterday I read an article from @abigail-dantes: https://steemit.com/psychology/@abigail-dantes/is-psychology-a-science

which raises the question if psychology is a science. But go and look yourself.

The Buddhist "middle path" is actually just a letting go of dichotomies or duality. It's not a mix but a path that slice through the heads and tails of the coin from the 3rd dimension. It's not a grey but moving into Blue&Orange from Black&White.

You see, you hear, you feel, you perceive and you stop there. Without pre-set labels or actions can live in freedom.

Cleverness does not always lead to gain nor stupidity to poverty.
---- Vidura (The Book of the Effort)-Mahabharata

Courage isn't just a second order concept but also something that isn't even necessary. One who 'forgets cowardice and daring nature will achieve what Courage is supposed to achieve without being courageous. What is required is the wisdom and insight to understand actions and consequences and the right action will naturally arise.

A balance IMO is merely a poor imitation of this.
PS: You may also find this conversation interesting. It does require little bit if pre-existing knowledge. You could use it as a bunch of new year anime recommendations.

What you suggest is from my point of view and the world I live in very difficult to achieve. Though I find it highly useful as an ideal resp. a must count into consideration.

I perceive my environment as highly matter oriented. We became builders & architects first in the material world and now extend that also into the computer matrix with which we want to be connected. If we were without pre-labeling we probably wouldn't have developed language. Language is for me one of the factors which pushes us humans in the direction of matter. We identify with language and because words became manifestations and appear as if they are true, I see no way out of labeling and naming "actions and things" other than to drop spoken language and find another form of communication.

The steps to gain wisdom are different from person to person. You may have made already the steps somewhere in your life, others need rational methods first to understand causes and conditions and consequences.

Of course you are right: When a situation happens in which one shows courage it is not necessarily a well thought out action but arising naturally from previously gained wisdom.

Do you have an example on that?

edit: the conversation you pointed to I tried to understand but I am having not the slightest clue what you guys are talking about. It is as if you are highly specialized mechanics talking about a very unique mechanism which was only built two times ever and with certain parts ... I am not at all in the whole anime business and therefore it also could be another language - it becomes blurry while reading. Sorry, but I guess I won't catch up on that.

It's said humans evolved out of apes and there really aren't many genetic differences between us and a tribe living in the middle of Amazon. Going that extra mile is the source of greatness. If somethings is hard, that's more reason to engage in it. All the mundane features of our modern lives were deemed impossible some time ago. Online communities was a contemptible pipe dream in the mid 90s.

I suggest you take a look at the anime mentioned in that conversation. I don't know how much time you have for those things.Fate/stay night is a little boring but it's considered the best place to start the franchise (Think Star Wars ep IV)

You could also watch Aldnoah.Zero but the most relevant to the discussion would be Psycho-Pass and Monster. Puella Magi Madoka Magica would be excellent place to start as it is the writer's best work and it's just 3 movies.

As for examples on spontanious actions:

Help! :-)))
man, you give me a lot homework here. I just saw IP man yesterday. It was the one with the old guy arriving in Honkong who fought for the little ones - it was the most quiet version as my man said. There are four more IP mans. I found it really sad to watch. But funny the scene in the end where "Bruce Lee" entered the movie and they showed that Mr. Ipman was filmed by his son - which was an authentic film.

It was impressive how the two masters from different martial arts were "discussing" disagreements and how polite everyone was. That was indeed artful. That impressed me the most on this character: that he was humane in the way that he felt grief for the loss of his wife, cared for Mrs. "North" and all others, got some things wrong and still could be seen as a master.

I do not promise though to watch all your recommendations;-)

I watched the Donnie Yen trilogy and another one called The Grandmaster. IP Man needs a good martial artist to bring the character to the screen. Only the Donnie Yen movies impressed me. They are going to film the 4th one this year.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ip_Man_(film_series)

If you want more good martial art movies like that try SPL: Sha Po Lang and he sequels. The 3rd act of the 2nd movie was some of the best tension and storytelling I've seen in my entire life. Third movie called Paradox is still not out on Netflix but I'm sure it'll be just as good.

But for the best of action cinema you need to see this:

I watched the videos in your above comment.

Causing a lot of emotions, in particular the first two ones. The suicide experiment made me cry.

For the 10 soldiers and their kills: hm. I would not celebrate that. Every kill left relatives like brothers, parents, wives, children. I know this relates to the ones, who were named "evil" and to prevent even more killings from their sides. But I cannot see anything good in praising killings in any way. Well, that is a topic very difficult to talk about. It shouldn't. One can only live the way it seems to be right, once confronted with war and danger of this kind.

Let's face it: the "evil" is always in challenge with the "good" and as far as I am concerned this will continue as long as "man" walks the earth.

P.S. I assume that you would have liked to transport the message behind it: like the bravery it took to act in the described way. As I am not able to look into the intentions of the killings, I cannot judge.

Any aggression is wrong and impure. Some are just less wrong than others. If Operation Valkyrie had succeed, it would have saved millions of lives even though the operation itself involved murder.

I have heard a story by a Buddhist monk, that in history of Buddhism there was one guy who actually is heard of having killed an emperor. The emperor was about to kill all the religious people in his kingdom and did on a great scale. The one guy was struggling deeply with himself in order to decide of making an end to the killings and therefore being reborn as something less or to stay passive. He decided for action and killed the emperor with an arrow shot from a mountain. The legend says that in this particular case the killer was reborn into a higher being because if he would have not sacrificed himself in doing evil millions would have died. So I know what you are meaning.

I just think that nowadays killings are difficult to be compared to this one and rarely stories are told where people came to an agreement without any killing whatsoever.

I am just kind of allergic to the heroic stories because we have so many of them. Do you get my point?

Is there ANY women/men talked about giving birth or taking care of a dying in the same heroic way?

This was the second movie type of you recommended to me.

Interesting! Hm... wonder how I can use this for myself. One of my biggest "problems" is, that I never have enough time to do all the things I want to (or should) do. If I do this thingy on top of it, it sorta adds to the problem even more... Will have to think about it for a while!

Happy New Year for you too 🎆

oops, I almost have overseen your comment!

The thingy is a nice practice tool once you got it fully. I make it really also for fun. And it helps all the time a little bit to push me in the right direction.

The "problem" sounds to me as to set priorities, which can be thought of wanting to much = greed

Square would be - here starting with a problem not with a virtue (though I do not think, that you really got this problem but are just nice and give me another chance to practice:-)

greed

= do things, see things, make & consume things too much)
---> direction of development: learn to let go, to be humble, to be content with less =

modesty

---> exaggeration would be: give away too much, sacrifice also what is needed for the self=

profligacy (Exzess)

---> direction of development would be: provide for the necessary provisions, gathering and consumption =

desire (care)

Now, if you would have started with "desire" it would have been difficult as is not necessarily regarded as a virtue or is understood differently. So it always is good to check, if the square comes out logically and the terms you choose at least have a certain meaning which must not fit for others, too.

Ah... 😨 ha....

Of course, a big thank you for writing this up for me in such detail!!

Not so sure, I understand. I really do have the problem, but its mostly related to my work. Since my technique is very slow and time consuming, I have a hard time meeting my deadlines... and it leaves little time for some fun stuff, like commenting here :-)

I wouldn't consider greed being the driving force for an artist.. hm 🤔

Looks like I'm going to have to print this whole post out (so I can write notes on it), read a couple of times to hopefully understand it.. and get frustrated, because the work on my paintings gets delayed 😱

Lol.. if you never thought, you needed a therapist, talk to one. They'll find a reason, why you do! 😉 (I mean that jokingly)

Don't do that. I really do not think, that you have a problem with that. When you are consumed by work and your art is REALLY time consuming, I would never consider the above.

Sorry, I did not want to be confusing (!).

I know you now a little while and I would in no way indicate that greed is in play with you. That would be quite presumptuous of me. Sometimes we have such an easy and humorous way of talking that I got it probably wrong that you wanted to pick up on my method here. Please excuse me.

:-)) blehh... I really also do not like when a dentist always finds something. So I totally understand- LOL I am saying often: I have the goal of making me "überflüssig".

I am interested in your ideas and your insights, your post is very good and interesting, I had time to think like you in making post, your post is clearly accurate and clear meaning, I guided you from want to be the best like you, I am amazed to you, I am amazed dengab jepinteran you hopefully you continue to make and develop your logic and skill in making post, thank 😘
