The European Space Agency has opened access to comet images

in #steemstem6 years ago

We all know that comets are basically ice cubes with dirt, but the brain still draws very different images when you see flying comets. Which, by the way, is very rare.

The European Space Agency (ESA) posted photos of legendary comets in the public domain. Also for the first time in history, the gentle landing of Philae devices, launched on the surface of the object, was made. However, scientists consider that they will not surprise astronomy fans with enough of this news and decide to play with them in the game, showing that they found Philae's probe in a photo taken on August 30, 2016 from a distance of 2.5 kilometers.

Spoiler: You need to see the shaded area in the upper left corner. The image resolution is about 4.6 centimeters per pixel. Open the photo in full size and see the probe on it with the link. At maximum magnification, when one pixel is about five centimeters, the probe looks like the photo below.

The photo was taken on September 2, 2016 from a distance of 2.7 kilometers. The probe dimension is about one meter.

Rosetta - the first spacecraft to enter the orbit of a comet. As of September 30, 2016 Rosetta collided with a comet, he completed a 12-year mission.

During his travel mission Rosetta ESA has collected many collections of photos and videos, will enable astronomers to better understand the solar system. Thanks to the hard work of the OSIRIS mission, more than 100 thousand comet images, two asteroids, Earth and Mars in high resolution can be found on the Web and free to use for their own purposes.

"All the images are archived and, finally, available to share." This is a fantastic experience! - along with his emotions Holger Sirks, OSIRIS principal investigator, - We are also pleased to report that all OSIRIS images are now available under the Creative Commons license, can use it "

Incredible photography and video data can be viewed in the images of ESA archives and their Planetary Science Archives.

I'm still stunned by this mission.
It's incredible we managed to land anything on such a small body.
I find these images mesmerising.
