5 Reasons Why College Football Should Go To An 8 Team Playoff

The College Football Bowl season is going strong as we get closer to the Final 4 College Football Playoff. Today we're going to think about a few reasons that NCAA Football Playoff should expand to 8 teams.

Going to 8 teams would:
1). Allow each of the power five conferences to be represented by their champion: In this writers opinion, every power five conference should be represented. It's hard to gauge the best conferences till AFTER the bowl games. Letting each conference to be represented takes away the guess work.
2). Expand the season one week longer: Adding four teams will only effect those for teams as far as scheduling and adding another game. The real winners are the fans of college football that get more of it. Everyone wins.
3). Give intermediate conferences a chance at a title: Almost every year there is a top ten team from a lesser conference that believes they should have a shot at the title. This would allow them to get embarrassed in front of everyone.
4). Not punish a good team for a good loss: Losing on the road to a top ten team shouldn't keep you out of the playoffs, but it does. Nobody with a close loss to a top team would be left out this way.
5) Encourage teams to schedule marquee match ups: The more Saturdays that are filled with prime time games the better. The beginning of 2017 had plenty of amazing games that shaped the landscape of the playoffs. Making it an 8 team playoff would keep those games rolling.

What do you think about the current 4 team playoff set up? Does it work for you or would you like to see it expand to 8 teams? Thank you for following @steemsports and you can follow me @oakley7227

I like your idea of expanding the field, but I would propose a 6 team playoff. All the power 5 conference champs and a wild card team. The top two teams get a bye. I think this makes the regular season that much better because you can play good teams out if conference to try to earn one of the bye spots, but if it doesn’t pan out then you can still win your conference and get in. For example, this year both Ohio State and Oklahoma get in, but Oklahoma would get the bye. All 6 teams would be really good so a bye week would be HUGE and a big deal.

This is the best idea I have heard in a long time! I love it. I like how it rewards the top 2 seeds but still allows all the champions in. Seems like a home run to me.

I think at least 8 would be better. More could work also. But yes. Many of your points make sense and i think a lot of people feel this way. Letting more teams in creates a sort of underdog story like we see in the NCAA basketball tournament. It creates excitement in the sport

I think you are so right and this is something that should have been changed years ago. A bunch of guys sitting in a room pick who they want as champions doesn't sound as fair as the way you described. Let the players determine who the champ is.Great post.

I agrees! I wanna see my MIZZOU Tigers get in there someday, but SEC is so tough and that Championship game can knock a contender out of the big 4.

I hope to include more SteemSports in my new STEEMIT MAGAZINE. Cheers and happy holidays!

Yeah, I definitely agree with you!
And this season has shown that there are at least 6 teams, which are nearly at the same level.

Look at Wisconsin - they went 12-1 and don't have the chance to compete for National Championship? Are you kidding me? How is it possible?

Or Auburn, who has two top-seed upsets in a single season? They can be a real force!

And J.T.Barrett - he looks good in big games and can compete at that level.

And one more reason - 1st round 8-team college playoffs can be played in the middle of December, so there won't be such a long pause in the Elite division of College Football.

I agree. Auburn has deserved to be in there a couple years recently. They always upset some top contenders and i think that should put them into the conversation

I think eight would be amazing, a definite improvement. I would actually rather see the top say 60 teams play in a ten "Bowl Cup Series" with the top six (two byes for highest rated teams+2 play in games to play those teams) and get rid of this bowl system. At most 20 teams overall would play three postseason games, and if you had the "Bowl Cup" sites like the NCAA tournament you could do this from mid-late december through mid January. You would actually be a few weeks in front of signing day making these games even more important as you could really finish the season on a real high gaining a lot of momentum. Almost a second mini season. Great post this topic has intrigued me for the thirty years I have been a rabid college football fan. Congrats Iowa Hawkeyes Pin Stripe Bowl Champions!

Any system where the five najor conference championship are a part of the playoffs is preferable. The less subjectivity the better.

Great points made here but it was hard enough to get the ncaa to implement the playoff style to begin with.

I'd like to see all undefeated teams get an automatic plaoff bid. do you agree?
