The Steem Sister Show - Episode 31 // Buying vs. Renting a Home

in #steemsistershow6 years ago

Welcome to the 31st episode of the Steem Sister Show!

Your hosts are @coruscate and @maryjaney. We are two sisters using the Steem blockchain to chat about our life experiences and provide a little entertainment value to the Steemit Community.

Topic of this Episode – Buying vs. Renting a Home

Oooh this ended up being such a fun episode! We definitely have a few different viewpoints when it comes to buying a home vs. renting - and so I think it made for some interesting discussion. Not to mention, you guys submitted such great questions for this episode!

Here are the questions covered in this episode:

  • Mary just went through the process of buying her first home – what was the most frustrating part?

  • Are you throwing money away by renting instead of putting it towards a mortgage?

  • What are the pros and cons of buying vs. renting

  • Audience question from @scottshots Have you ever had a bad neighbor while renting an apartment that made you want to buy a house and not want to have neighbors that close?

  • Audience question from @aussieninja – What are your “must have’s” in buying a property?

  • 15 or 30 year mortgage? Which is better?

What is the Steem Sister Show All About?

We aim to bring more “non-crypto” related content to the Steem Blockchain. Although there is nothing wrong with this kind of content (@corsucate even posts on crypto related material sometimes) – we want to help create a better onboarding experience for new users. We talk a lot about attracting new users to the platform – but if the trending page is filled with crypto posts and flagging wars, they are likely to lose interest quickly.

We hope that by creating content that is more similar to what they are used to seeing on other social media sites – they will feel more excited about being here and creating content of their own!

How Does It Work?

We pick a different topic every episode, and then throw totally random questions about that topic in a hat and go back and forth. We always have a mix of our own questions and some audience questions. Our rule is that we cannot tell each other our answers before filming! So you guys are getting our raw, unfiltered reactions here.

Every episode we announce the next week’s topic so people can submit questions.

Want to win some SBD??

If we chose to answer your question in the next show… we will send you 2 SBD! Now that’s some easy money.

Next Week’s Topic : Being the Boss - What It's Like to Manage People

This is definitely going to be an interesting episode! I'm a bit more of a management veteran and have managed teams of people at different organizations - both large and small. Mary on the other hand is a newb in the world of managing people - but is quickly realizing some of the challenges and tricky dynamics.

If you would like the possibility of winning 2 SBD - please submit your questions! Anything on the topic of Managing People is fair game.Listener questions always end up being the best ones - so thank you in advance to everyone who submits one!

That’s a Wrap!

We hope you all enjoyed this episode! I know we asked you guys for your opinion quite a bit in this episode - so we can't wait to hear your thoughts!

With Love,

The Steem Sisters

Conspiracy theory: Your neighbor that bought you the Quiet Slippers was trying to sabotage you!! I mean, SHE GOT INJURED WITH THEM! How non-subtle of her! ...... Loved this episode and totally agree with everything you said @coruscate ! Congrats on not buying into the propaganda that you have to “buy a house” even though what you really are doing is taking on the biggest debt burden in your lifetime. Totally with you on the paying with cash idea :) I suspect one day you will pay with cash by paying with crypto :).

Ooooh that would be cool! Woudn't surprise me either - the world is changing and soon things like that will be possible! Maybe it will even allow us to sideswipe some of the extra expense that comes with brokers/real estate agents etc.

Also thanks for chiming into the conversation as a whole. It took me a long time to kind of sort what I think on the subject and am still open to hearing other opinions. Glad to hear i'm not totally crazy for thinking the way I do!

I dont think you are crazy at all! At least not for THAT reason! Lol totally kidding :)

Awesome show @coruscate! It really is a very personal thing and I know from my own experience that you will always encounter an array of opinions no matter who you speak to.

I used to be a home owner but sold and am now renting, so have had a taste of both sides of the spectrum. It is a wonderful investment, but for now - in South Africa with everything going on, I would prefer not to have such large sums invested into something like property. Also, the possibility of emigration leaves me wanting to rather have less attachment.

You gals are FABULOUS!!! :)

aww thank you @jaynie!! I'm stoked that you enjoyed our show! <3

You make some great points on the buying vs. renting conversation. emigration concerns would make me want to rent as well! haha Too risky otherwise.

Thanks again for stopping by and checking out our show! :)

Only a pleasure love and REALLY do love your VIBE!!! ;)

I can't preach this enough to first time renters, or buyers. ALWAYS BUY! Espcially when you consider the value of return you'll get back on owning a home, even for 2 or 3 years will be worth the investment. The only time i don't recommend you buying a house is if you "literally" can't afford a basic mortgage payment. So please study your finances and do a lot of personal financial research before making a decision.

Even if basic mortgage payments are triple what renting a much nicer place costs? Where i live.... the housing market is out of control. Rent is pretty high too - but housing is insane unless you want to live out in the country and not have a very nice house. haha

I guess my point was that the money i'm saving by renting can be put into other investments that will grow in those 2-3 years. The amount i'd be putting into a mortgage in that time isn't really going to create a lot of extra equity for me. Especially since it seems like we are way overdue for a correction/possible crash soon.

When things really crash, then I'd feel much more open to buy. Right now it's just a sellers market where I live though.

Thanks for offering your thoughts and adding to the discussion/conversation!! You are always great about that @mainos12345!!

Haha! Thanks for the shout out! Sorry to bring out some bad stories, but I figured there would be. Thanks for sharing, fun episode! Congratulations on the new house @maryjaney!

Yay! I'm glad you enjoyed some of our crazy neighbor stories. It was definitely a fun question for us!

One day we will be buying houses with STEEM we earned today 😁

I sure hope so! hehe

On managing people:

What is the most dishonest thing you've had to tell a subordinate to get them to want to do what you wanted them to do?

I mean; for me was when I was a subcontractor for construction there was a guy that was simply not carrying his weight and I wanted to get rid of him. I didn't want the hassle of explaining to him that he was costing everyone money (again), so, I told the rest of the crew to setup at the next area and when he showed up late, I told him how the main contractor had ended the contract because of some made up excuse and that we were all out of work.

He packed up his stuff and went on his way, and I didn't have to have the uncomfortable conversation of telling someone how useless they were.

Ooooh great question and crazy story! haha I tend to avoid conflict too - so I'm sure I have tons of stories on this.

Thanks for checking out the show and leaving a question for next week!

@coruscate Thanks for sharing! I'm definitely in the buy a home group although my plan has always been to look for the cheapest properties I can and rent them out. My goal is to have 2 or three paid off income properties by the time I'm 40

wow, that's an awesome goal!! 3 totally paid off properties is super impressive. Sounds like a great plan!

As a manager, it is not always an easy task considering the number of individual differences in an organisation. My question goes thus; you as a manager, when giving praise to your members, is it okay if some people get recognition and others don't?

Much love @coruscate and @maryjaney.

I'm planning on renting a place soon but have been thinking about trying to invest instead-- thanks for sharing!

I'm so glad you enjoyed this episode!! Hopefully we gave you a little food for thought with our varied responses. :)

I attempted to pay my August rent witb #STEEM backed dollars.
My landlord looked at me like I have 4 eyeballs.

haha yeah wouldn't that be nice? Maybe one day. lol

Do ya think STEEM will ever get back above the $5 mark?

Posted using Partiko Android

I sure hope so. haha I have a LOT of faith in the power of Steem - but the slow progress of things like SMT's makes me wonder a little. I guess we'll see how everything plays out.
