Queen of the Night or Orchid Cactus
If you have something like this extraordinary cactus, with flowers shaped like a majestic waterlily, the best thing that you should do to enjoy its beauty is to stay up late at night. If you cant do that then this plant is not for you, the queen of the night cactus flowers between dusk and dawn and she is well known to be the highlight of the party season.
As you can see, the leaves of this plant grows from another leaf, and it seems that the leaf becomes its stem which makes it a unique one. This plant was acquired by my mother in a flower farm when she went to
Balamban, Cebu last month.
This cactus plant originates or hails from tropical rain forests of Mexico and grows in the tree tops. This plant lives on the surface of other plants, and it usually takes nourishment from the environment, commonly from fallen leaves, bird droppings and dead insects.
To propagate this kind of plant, cutting from the long flat arching stem is the best thing to do. After cutting, allow it to dry for a few days before planting it into a pot that is very well drained. In cold weather, we should keep it slightly dry and in summer, we should water it often. And in the spring, to have more long cane-like shoots and more blooms feeding during the growth season is the best thing for it.
The morning sun will be great to increase the number of flowers. Its stems can become slightly yellow in strong light especially at noon. This plant dislikes over-watering and prefer mild winters. As I had said earlier, keeping it dry through cool weather would be great and watering it more often in summer will make it bloom. Its leaves that serves as modified stems enables it to easily photosynthesize and help it adapt well in the environment, you could mostly see this plant clinging to trees.
