Hey Steem Monster Fans

I thought I'd take a crack at the Steem Monsters Rare Card Fantasy Story Contest! and see if I could come up with an epic backstory for one of the characters. This week's backstory would be centred around the Tyrus Palladium, a Rare Summoner whose Element is Life.

The birth of Tyrus Paladium

A young boy named Tyrus was born into a low-income family in a rural town. His father was a blacksmith, and his mother spent all her waking hours tending to his brothers and sisters.

As the middle child, Tyrus was hardly the centre of attention and grew up meek much to his father's dismay. Naturally, Tyrus father wanted his son to continue the family trade and have a mans job, to work with his hands.

Tyrus however only had one love, the love for reading, he wasn't a built for hard labour, he was an academic. He spent most of his waking hours reading any book he could find, borrowing, stealing, begging to get his next book. At the age of 12, a young Tyrus would be a firm fixture in the local bookstore.

It was a place he could be himself away from his family who he felt never understood him and did not value him for his differences. The store owner, an old man, took pity on the young boy and employed him as a clerk.

Tyrus would clean up around the store, learn to mend books, sell books and improve his knowledge. It was the perfect job; he was in absolute bliss, he had found his calling.

The purge begins

Tyrus had now been working in the bookstore for four years, reading every day. He spent many days sorting through books, trading with travellers, and curating the most elegant literary piece he could find. The most prized books he kept locked away in a cellar below the store where he also spent time practising what he had read.

One day a weary old traveller walks into the bookstore looking to trade a book for some money to fund the rest of his journey. The man looked battered, bruised and in need of a bath and a hot meal.

Tyrus evaluated the book; it was something he had never seen before, so it peaked his interests. He immediately purchased the book and helped the traveller find keep for the night and tend to his wounds and his hunger pains.

Tyrus knowing this books value then deliberately stored the book in the cellar for safe keeping and off he went back home.

A thirst for knowledge

What Tyrus did not know was that the traveller was a Mage and a protector of the life order of Divine healers. His wounds were from protecting the book for years from the Jarlax worshipping cult, called "The order of the undead".

The traveller had been looking for a successor and protector and saw the boy was of pure make which is why he parted with the book so quickly. What he did fail to do was warn Tyrus of the immediate danger he was now in as The order had made its way to his town since they had been tracking the Mage for some time and he had only narrowly escaped the last encounter with The Order.

The bookkeeper turned protector

The order had been following him trying to locate the book for their nefarious purposes and if they could not have the power of the Book of Palladium no one shall. The order entered the town swiftly in the dark of the night, ransacked the bookstore in search of the Book only to come up empty-handed.

Upon leaving they set the store alight burning all the books inside. The next day Tyrus showed up to the bookstore to find it in ruins, something broke within the young man! How could someone be so cruel? How could they destroy knowledge? How could something so harmless and bring so much joy to him and many others simply be gone in an instant?

Tyrus falls to his knees in the ruble, at the face of the store tears run down his face. He's a mix of emotions, anger, sadness, hatred and disbelief.

He then remembers to uncover the door to the cellar and check if anything could be salvaged. He climbs down into the basement to find a few books still in order one of them being the Book of Palladium.

He opens the book and begins reading through it looking for ways to restore the damage sustained by the store. He comes across a healing spell and tries it out on one of the damaged books, it works.

He uses the spell book's divine healing spells to restore the books and the store to the way it was before the attack, but something is still bothering him.

Knowledge is power

Tyrus begins to realise the world is much bigger than the bookstore and the fantasies he read about. It was time for him to follow his path the way the heroes he had learned about had done.

The knowledge of The Paladium book are far too great to not share with the world, and it was his duty to share that knowledge and help others and perhaps bring to justice, The Order who had attacked the Mage and the store.

Tyrus then decides to set out to track down The Order and to help preserve as many books as possible and vows to stop the order from destroying prized possessions he holds so dear.

He is now, Tyrus Paladium, the protector of knowledge.

Short version

Tyrus, a meek bookstore clerk, comes into possession of The Magical Book of Palladium and becomes its sole protector from those who would misuse its life-giving power.
