Steemit Sandwich Contest Week One year anniversary Week #52 - Culture fusion Focaccia Braai Broodjie
A huge congratulations to @jaybird on Steemit Sandwich Contest’s One Year Anniversary, an amazing feat in today's world where things come and go at such a fast pace!
I must confess I used to hate making sandwiches, but now am quite addicted. Hubby’s only too happy in his new position in the quality control department, being the chief sandwich taste tester :)
So a big thank you to @jaybird from all of us here in my household, and I’m sure in many other steemian sandwiteers’ households as well, for encouraging us with thoughtful comments; this and the great interaction between the contestants is what makes SSC so very special!
For SSC One Year Anniversary 52 weeks I have made a very different Braai Broodjie aka BBQ toasted sandwich - using an Italian Sciacchiatine Croccanti - a thin crispy Focaccia - cooked on a BBQ (or Braai as we call it in South Africa). You have to taste it to appreciate it - smoky flavours fused into the crispy super thin and highly addictive Focaccia. Do not for one moment think that the usual filling of South African Braai Broodjie - strong Cheddar Cheese, Tomato and Onion, is boring, I guarantee it tastes amazing with the smoky favours from cooking on the BBQ.

The inspiration for this Italian cum South African Braai Broodjie came during a very special family visit. My nephew @therneau and his wife @juspassetti, who has very deep Italian roots, paid us a surprise visit. The occasion was a sad one for @jusipassetti as she came to pay her final respects to a very special ex boss, but they turned this around and took the opportunity to make it a long overdue family visit - they do live over a 1000km away! Needless to say, it's been an awesome and very special time especially getting to meet the very special Katalina & getting to know young Soren a little better!
@therneau was the chief Braai Master, and although I made the bread dough, he took over making the super thin Focaccia and toasted it once the filling was in - obviously once the coals were not too hot or else it would burn and the cheese would not melt into a runny delicious mess.
Ingredients
- Bread dough
- Garlic butter - melted
- Strong Cheddar Cheese - grated
- Tomato - sliced
- Onion - sliced
- Salt and freshly ground Black Pepper
- Hot coals
- Good company
- Good weather
- Something cold and fizzy to quench the thirst
Bread dough was rolled out super thin, brushed with garlic butter and placed over hot coals on the BBQ.
Turned over to cook the other side - see how the air pockets start forming.
Beautifully super thin Italian Focaccia aka Sciacchiatine Croccanti ready to be turned into a South African Braai Broodjie - always wonderful to see how cultures mingle and become something special and deliciously different.
Cut in half, grated cheese, sliced onions & tomatoes, salt & pepper on one half.
Seal Focaccia Braai Broodjie and place back on BBQ to melt cheese.

I don't even like looking at these pictures, because I'm on a diet. I've gained about 10 kilos. I reduced almost 100% intake of sweets and decreased to carbohydrates hehehe.

Ohhh cooking the bread dough over the bbq and getting some charred spots must have given a nice charred flavor. Looks delectable!

I am, you see, one of those carb addicted folks in the 'autumn' of my life. I fight an ongoing battle with weight and blood sugar and the principle enemy is carbs, particularly as expressed by bread. I miss it so, and your post made me slobber like Pavlov's Dogs.
If I ever get to SA I'll be happy to join you in a sandwich. Otherwise, this is the stuff of dreams.
