Steemit Sandwich Contest Week 51 - BBQ Sandwich Parcels aka Braai Broodjie - BBQ sans meat

Barbeque conjures up images of meat sizzling and smoking over a hot fire - beef steaks, spare ribs, lamb chops etc etc, the list is endless.

Here in South Africa with our mild climate, any excuse is used to have a BBQ or a Braai as we call it. So last week when we took a breakaway with friends down the south coast of Kwazulu Natal, the fires were lit daily on our balcony.
Besides listening to the waves breaking on the sea-shore, there is nothing as relaxing as sitting next to a crackling fire on a cold winter's night.

Braai Broodjie (Afrikaans term for BBQ Toasted Sandwich) popped up for our lunch menu, and I thought of sharing it here with @jaybird and all his Sandwiteers for SSC Week 51.

Weber Braai (BBQ) waiting to be used - the sun is out and the ocean is peeking at us in the distance but we need to eat.

Bread is buttered on one side - this will be the outside of our braai broodjie.
First layer on our braai broodjie is a generous amount of strong mature Cheddar Cheese.

Thick slices of sweet Tomatoes with a Herb seasoning goes on next.

Diced red Onions on top of that.

And some more cheese.

Wet some string and use to make a sandwich parcel and it's ready to be toasted over the hot coals, fillings safe and secure with the help of the string.

BraaiBroodjies FTW!!!

Is that Aromat that I see on there? Nothing outside of SA really compares.. Yummy :-)

I normally add a bit of chutney (Mrs Ball's of course) as well.

Cool post... good luck the the comp.

Definitely @braaiboy, but this is the new one without msg. I enjoy braai broodjie with the Mrs Ball's Sweet Chilli sauce, quite hot and real yummy then but I did not have anything like that on our trip!

I am still full from lunch, but you are still tempting me. This sounds great. Gonna have to put Braai Broodji on my list of foods to try.

I really hope you do try it, this smoky toasted sarmie is a real treat :)

Those look awesome! take extra care not to burn them though, the string is a unique trick.

You're right the coals must not be too hot or else you have a burnt toastie, the cheese needs to melt! Thanks for stopping by :)

Visiting at Caribbean Estates what a lovely retreat, those sandwiches for lunch a great tasty treat.

Nice photography and detail on South African life once again @lizelle

Thanks @joanstewart, it was such a lovely break, plus the weather was too gorgeous!

Oh my this looks luscious Ms Lizelle! What a fun way to toast your sandwich. Adds a smokey flavor to the sandwich which sounds amazing. Well done! Lovely pictures of your breakaway and bbq

It really is a fun way and very popular here in South Africa, wish I was back on holiday! Thank you for your support, always nice to see you:)

This is interesting, so you basically bbq the bread lol there's no meat! lol.

Soy & Linseed Bread does sound pretty good tho.

I like this idea. Totally unexpected & As always you make it look so appetizing!

Thanks @jaybird, Braai Broodjie is very popular in South Africa as can be seen from my #teamsouthafrica friends' comments ;) It's usually eaten with the BBQ meat though as most Saffa's are big into meat, but we all have a soft spot for this smoky toasted sandwich! You need to try it on the BBQ.

Grilled sandwiches on a fire is so nice. I love your posts. They make me feel like I know the culture of your land. It's so beautiful there.

Thanks @carolynstahl, wish you could visit here, it's a beautiful country with awesome people! I will be doing a post on our trip down the coast soon.

Ummmmm that rich sandwich and I learned a trick with the wet cabuya, I would eat several, I congratulate you rich friend recipe. Greetings @lizelle
