Are you a dog person? If so, today's idiom is for you (even though the phrase itself will not really be very positive). Have a look:
Let's look at a dialog:
Look at this city! Trash in the streets, graffiti on walls, criminals lurking in corners... This place has really gone to the dogs.
My relationship has gone to the dogs. I think it's time to split.
The origins of this idiom are interesting (as usual :P). One of them says that in the 19th century when food went bad it was given to dogs to eat. That is why when something is "ruined" it goes to the dogs - meaning it is given to dogs :)
