The Thick and Thin: Prune the dead wood

in #steemit6 years ago (edited)

It seems that Steemit is kind of down at the moment and is struggling. I have tried to comment a few times to someone but have instead given up and figure I would write a little post about writing posts. Meta.

The other day I wrote a post about people waiting for better conditions and sunshine to act whereas it is those who adapt and work in the rain that do the best. I thought I would provide a small addendum to that now.

Working when others are not is something I enjoy however, reading much of the work at these times is something I don't. It is now that you can really see the difference between those who are posting for money and those who enjoy what they do. Yes, the post count tapers off but that is not the worst part. The worst part is that people who would at least fake caring enough to provide something of interest and quality no longer even hide their contempt for their audience.

It isn't just New and Trending I am disappointed to say, but many usually decent posters are providing a lot of junk. It seems that brain cell counts have fallen at about the same rate as that of the markets, perhaps even a little more. At least though, I am confident that the markets will recover but, I can't say the same about these authors.

For me, what people say and the way people behave in good times is not a great indicator of their character. It is how people behave in the difficult times that is indicative of who they are and their personal ethics and, there have been very few surprises so far. Those who have harped on about 'quality' and 'doing it for the love' and complained about 'poor content' are often the ones who fall the fastest and from the highest.

People buy into their nonsense words in the moment but, I would suggest keep an eye on the people you support when times are more difficult. You will definitely find out if it they are talking BS or actually live and breathe their words. You will find out whether they care about the community at all. Keep an eye and mark them for when prices go up as you might want to think twice about providing support to them again. Does that sound harsh?

Many of these people benefit a great deal when prices are up and are all about 'building' community but when times are difficult, they disappear back under the rocks. How can one claim to want to build community if they are only willing to work when conditions are favorable?

Communities are built on the thick and thin and if the people you are investing into are only 'good timers', you are investing poorly if you want the community to be strong. Because, as conditions degrade, they slide away and leave a vacuum for those who are not here for the community to fill and, the rot sets in fast. They are the over-subscribed entitlement crowd. Consider cutting them off early.

Pruning them back means not investing into them and suffering sunk cost fallacy errors. It is to clean out the feed and restructure it for better content and most importantly, better people. It doesn't sound politically correct when I say it does it but, a strong, long-term view community requires strength of character actors who are willing to keep pushing even though benefits are lower as they are looking long.

A strong community must have people who behave consistently for betterment and when the difficult times arrive, we can all see who these people truly are. Pay attention and don't fall into the trap of supporting them again. There is a Fool me once situation at play yet time and time and again I have seen the same thing happen here and then people wonder why things aren't improving.

The fastest way to improve this community is to support people who are improving this community and removing support from those who are not. When times are good it is harder to tell which is which but right now - open your eyes, get out your pruning shears and cut back hard.

This is very true. You can tell who is here because they want to be, and want to do something good for the community vs those who are just "here for the rewards" (aka themselves). I noticed this a lot around the time that I joined.

I joined around father's day last year. I saw tons of posts and lots of people helping others (as well as themselves) and there was a really happy atmosphere. Soon after I joined, the price of Steem plummeted and almost all of those happy people disappeared. It was tough for me as a new member because at the time I had no idea what the price of Steem was or why so many people seemed to have just "left for no reason". Tons of the support that I was building up disappeared overnight and my $0.15 post rewards quickly dwindled to $0.02 after so many of my followers left.

I've kept on going since then though. I made new connections, new friends, new followers. My posts still don't collect a large dollar value, but that's not why I'm here. I love the "core" community here. So many people care about others in the community, and they care about keeping the platform a place where people will want to join and help grow and make better (without simply trying to come up with a new "get rich quick" scheme).

That's what keeps me here too. The community. The group(s) of people who care more about the community and the future of the platform. Sure, the monetary aspect will always be here, and that's fine and somewhat important, but the more people who we have on here that view Steemit as a community first and see the monetary rewards as a "bonus", the better off the community will be (in my humble / not so humble opinion).

So... slash and burn those fair-weather friends!

I love the "core" community here

Yes and it is there that if interested, you will also build the long-term support and probably get the rewards from. There will come a time when the fair weatherers will be shut out.

So... slash and burn those fair-weather friends!

Start now :)

I've been purging for a couple of months. I had cut down my following list by about a third. I like to review my following list on a quarterly basis. It keeps my feed fresh and updated with people who I like to support and read content from.

open your eyes, get out your pruning shears and cut back hard.

Hey @tarazkp!! Hey @evolved08gsr!! ¿Have you both heard before about Spectacles"?

I bet this new tool will help big time using those pruning shears more easily to start the slash and burning task without sweat more than necessary getting rid of all these opportunistic parasitic season climbing plants growing in your backyard.

Take a look. I suspect you won't regret been beating from a TL|DR post once in a while. LoL }:)

Good call. Think I'll give my unfollow button a bit of a workout.

It is how people behave in the difficult times that is indicative of who they are and their personal ethics.

Absolutely, and this is true in all walks of like. Fair-weather friends, colleagues, family members, peers etc.

On Steemit, I've noticed a lot less posts from people I follow, and this is perhaps because they feel the rewards are no longer large enough to be worthy of their time. This suggests they were only here for the earnings to begin with. Don't get me wrong, we all love the rewards that Steemit offers, but we should also look to give back as much as possible too, and that means giving the platform support when times aren't as fruitful.

This suggests they were only here for the earnings to begin with.

It does indicate that. if the dip is long be ready for the 'I've been busy' posts when it raises again. It is predictable.

I totally agree with you. Majority, posts only for the money. Which is not necessarily a bad thing. But that's not a good sign for the steemit community. As the steem prices go down, the rewards also go down. Due to which, there's a sharp decline in the number of articles posted by those greedy authors.
This is actually an eye-opener. This will separate the passionate authors with the greedy ones

Keep your eyes open and mark them.

to support people who are improving this community and removing support from those who are not

How to distinguish the two? Does anyone using votes bots count for one side or the other? :P

there are other factors but the people in the late 60 and 70 reps using and supporting the bidbots? .. Gone :P

Taking the bidbots out of the system completely would be an interesting experiment now. Taking off autovotes would be too. Not going to happen but it would be fun to see.

Not going to happen but it would be fun to see.

Way more than fun to see mate. Get ready to exercise your most luring & sexy cheer leading contortionist poses to make the Devs put in practice soon these interesting experiments you propose in exchange they can enjoy more of our tempting postures full of lust in the future.

Yeah! I say OUR tempting postures, because I also would try to do a few of these by myself. Even if I break a bunch of my old bones with the attempt. }:)

If something is allowable, then it should be for everyone. If it's not, then it's not for everyone. If something is good or bad for the community then it applies to everyone, regardless of rep. If bid bots are ok to use for some, then it's ok for everyone.

I didn't say to limit them, I mean, really?? It is kind of like NBA players dunking on an 8 ft ring.

Bidbots should be taken out of the ecosystem totally in my opinion.

Read the last post by alexbeyman (rep 74): "Okay, Fuck it. I'll Use Vote Bots."

Somebody with over 6,000 followers shouldn't be making ~4sbd/post on average.

LOL...

Perhaps if a 74 rep he would spend some time answering some of his comments...

One of the reasons I haven't started posting right away is I actually do want to take the time to decide what to present an how to do it. If I am honest, most social media sites I have used because friends and family want to keep up with me or for businesses. I do find it frustrating trying to find people I would actually like to follow and am not quick to add a person to my feed for that reason. My interests vary, so once I do decide how to go about introducing myself, I want to provide quality over quantity. I appreciate your various topics of writing. It's something new and I don't get bored by your thoughts written.

This took a few tries to actually post.

you are right brother and as you said there are a lot of "good timers" and for sure having this kind of people will never enable us to have a strong community. Communities are built on the thick and thin. thank you for the post.

A great post. Relevant to me at present, as i've just joined steemit and have been watching arguments between steemians over " rewards" and authors who just post to make money and don't add quality.
I think we can see this most in the area of crypto currency.
I see authors making huge rewards by giving faulty financial advice using practices from a different paradigm. "Technical analysis", they call it.
They set themselves up as "experts" when they clearly aren't. They lift graphs and other titbits from other forecasts around the net and them pass them off as their own advice o crypto. Not only are they taking huge rewards but they are giving bogus advice. If you attempt to tell people that you get comments from people who treat crypto like a religion and will hear nothing negative, even when correct. I'm a newbie and I found out last night that these self styled "whales" can target me by down flagging all my posts and that's already happening.

I think it is everywhere but when there is money involved, people are both greedier and looking for it more.

Yes, astrology.

About as much use. I will follow your work, any tips for steemit?

engage well and perhaps join in some discords (I don't really use) ir steem.chat

Aye! Aye!! I I totally agree with you. It is when the ships are down that we can truly know those who are invested in the growth of the community. This is not about steem power or steem or sbd. This is about putting in the work not because of the profit but because you know that even if steemit was just a blog, you will be posting, commenting and clicking the likes.

At the end of the day, if everyone goes home when prices are low, then what will be left when prices go up.

I am still posting because I am doing what I have always been doing before I heard of steemit and I will still be doing it until my fingers can no longer tap the keys. Something to think about.

The crap that is floating through the system now ;)

This is the way it should be and I hope you get lots and lots of rewards doing it too.

😂 I can understand the low output though. The money is the major fuel of the platform, with the prices down, lots of folks will be considering posting not worth the trouble as the rewards will be nothing compared to the exquisite post that they had laboured over.

I just wish that they can understand that the life of the platform does not lie in the hands of those who buy steem and invest but rather in the hands of those who invest not just money but time posting articles and creating content that will make the platform a powerhouse of creative output in the future.

Took hours for me to be able to log in here today. I hope the issues with the site are now taken care of.

I just made a reply to @taskmaster4450 some minutes ago who wrote about people staying motivated through times like this. There's only one line to put in here and that is: tough time creates tough men. It's at moments of high wind that you will know the stamina of the chicken.

lol, never heard this before.

Haha, one of those African proverbs.

I like that..the chicken comment..

One of those African proverb, I think from Kenya or Nigeria.
