SteemitTalk Special Event: Community Round-table Discussion

in #steemit7 years ago (edited)

We're All in the Same Boat

This next weekend instead of our normal Steemit Talk Podcast, we are going to host a Community Round-table Event. This will be a place for the community to discuss its goals, issues and ideally enhance understanding between the various users whether content creators, curators, witnesses, investors or employees.

I have never seen such an inclusive crypto currency, Steemit literally built the coin around a whole new asset; the community.
-@decentralizd

...there's an inherent dichotomy at work, namely that the blockchain structure is all about decentralization (APART-ness) which community is all about TOGETHER-ness. It's a nifty idea to wrap a social platform around a blockchain structure... but how does one execute that?
-@denmarkguy

We don't have to agree on everything nor like everyone, but all in all we really do have shared goals that we can work towards. As we've seen time and time again from @dantheman a major question is how to build consensus from this. I don't claim to have all the answers, but they are out there among the community as a whole.

Event Time and Place

This will take place in the normal time and place as the Steemit Talk Podcast. We will be RECORDING and REPOSTING this allowing others that couldn't make it listen, comment, etc. You will be able to interact both through voice and text during this discussion. However the text chat won't necessarily be able to be reposted, so we will try our best to verbally state points made in there.

Day and Time: Saturday, March 4th at 3pm CST (9pm GMT)

Duration: We are roughly planning on this lasting an hour and a half, but we may go longer if it is needed.

Place: Steemit Talk Podcast Discord Server in the STP Live voice channel

Our Role

This is going to be hosted on the Steemit Talk Podcast Discord Server by @sykochica and @giftedgaia. However this is not a @steemittalk podcast itself, merely a special event we are facilitating. If you think this is a good idea and potentially beneficial, please resteem this post to get the word around.

Our role will be to serve as moderators to try and keep the discussions moving along in a calm, civilized manner. If you have goal, issue, or topic ideas you would like brought up either leave it as a comment to this post or put it in the request line channel in our Discord.

We are not here to take sides short of the betterment of the community as a whole and the success of this platform. However we WILL MUTE people who do not allow others to talk or attack others directly. This is not the place to enflame things further, instead an attempt to bring people closer together and enhance understanding. Code and infrastructure can only go so far in determining if a society can thrive.

Goals

I'm a believer that everybody does what they do for a reason. With this in mind I feel there is benefit for various community members to get a better idea of where others are coming from any why an action (or non-action) was chosen. I'd love for anybody that would like to see this platform succeed join in and take part whether a minnow, dolphin, whale, or Steemit Inc employee. If there is somebody you would like to participate, ping them (using @ their name) in the comments to show your desire for them to take part.

[These goals are just the general framework we had in mind leading towards a successful community. Feel free to comment on things to refine or add here.]

With this in mind the goals of this round-table are:

  • Have a discussion to humanize each other
  • Identify communication issues or misunderstood viewpoints
  • Generate a small set of COMMON GOALS for the community itself
  • Generate a small set of COMMON ISSUES impeding these goals
  • What would be needed to nurture passion and/or reduce frustration
  • Discuss if public fighting is helpful and/or harmful
  • Induce patience: Look at things in the works to solve issues like 'topical communities' and delegated voting or already enacted user driven projects

I know there have been a lot of discussions among TONS of posts and comments that touch on various aspects related to these goals including users such as @timcliff, @snowflake, @krnel, @beanz, @smooth, @personz, @ats-david, @fidelity, @fyrstikken, @bitcoinparadise, @stellabelle and many more. (Sorry I can only list so many here off the top of my head.)

Outside of this there are projects run by people trying to improve things (such as voting or project exposure) on their own such as @steemtrail started by @instructor2121 and the Beyond Bitcoin from @officialfuzzy. These issues are important to touch on, but it's important to keep them focused towards what I think most (if not all) of us want, which is to see Steemit grow (both in users and investment) and succeed.

I'd love to hear perspective across the spectrum of people on here from minnows to whales, content creators to investors, and those in Steemit Inc like @ned, @sneak, or @picokernel.

The building of online communities has been tried before so ideally we can learn from pieces of history. @beanz recently had reposted an article that discussed the rise and fall of Digg.com that seems an applicable read. Please comment if you have similar historical materials to share.

Rules

  • Try to allow others to voice their side of things. While there are not going to be set time limits, concision helps to let everyone speak.
  • NO PERSONAL ATTACKS!
  • Try to be Respectful and Not Yell
  • Be Constructive
  • It's preferred (but not required) that speakers wear headphones to prevent audio feedback. If there is a persistent and bad feedback issue we may have to mute that person and interact through chat itself. This not only makes for a bad recording but can impact the discussion itself.

This sounds like an excellent idea! I hope this will also inspire a lot of folks to use the next couple of days to think about (and even better, BLOG about!) the central idea of "What does Steemit mean to ME, as a venue?" Seems like it could be a valuable community-wide exercise, to clarify swirling ideas and concepts into more concrete points of action.

Thanks for doing this! Unfortunately, I shall be at work (we have an art gallery and 1st Saturdays are our town's monthly "Art Walk") so I'll miss it, but hopefully it will be archived.

That is a great idea, to think and/or blog about the question you posed! I'll try my best to keep an eye out for those to get them included as best as possible.

This will be an interesting 'test' compared to our usual format of things. Who knows, if it goes well be may try to periodically do one of these.

Wish you'd be able to make it, but totally understandable. Life has to come first. However this will be recorded and posted to let others listen, comment and ideally keep the conversation going.

If you do post anything or one you've already made on this topic, feel free to link it in here. :)

@sykochica, thanks... I did end up writing a rather lengthy explorative post, which you can find here. Hopefully people will find some useful bits in it.

I like that question to post on. Will try to contribute. Do you suggest a tag so the posts will be easy to find? Maybe "roundtable"?

I think I will create the tag "steemitroundtable" which is long, but makes it more obvious that it relates to the community.

good point ... steemitroundtable sounds like a good way to go

That sounds great! Sorry I've not been able to respond. I ended up out of town the last couple days so haven't been able to keep up with everything for this.

I wasn't able to get back home in time for the roundtable. Hope it went well.

Hmm.. I feel like my voice is valuable here both in monetary gain and people who connect with personal replies. Thank you. @justinashby

That would be great! I know often there is a gap between coder and end-user (from personal experience) and I assume there is a gap on here between investor and non-investing content creators (again, this part is a guess.)

I hope you can make it and lend your view of things!

My suggestion is for people to not only brainstorm and figure it out on the live show.

Each speaker should have a little file folder with them with ideas thought of a couple days in advance before the show starts.

Ie: come prepared. The show will be a lot more effective that way.

Rofl! I'd totally wear a conversation hat!
Even if the effect was mostly lost with me doing this remotely nowadays. :P

I believe @steemittalk 's policy is that conversation hats are not required at this time. So.. you know.. its good to have options.

I still have a feeling we might change that policy in the future! Time to start searching for a steemit branded fedora! Lol

my wife and I will be there :)

I like this approach to try to find common ground. I'll try to be there. Have to help out with a public speaking contests for young people in the morning.

Hopefully, it will be over and I can get back to attend this, it should be interesting if everyone arrives and remembers we have two ears to hear with and one mouth to speak with because we need to listen twice and speak once.

It's not who over-talks the other person wins?

discussions sometimes seem like they end up that way. Not how they are supposed to happen though.

With moderators, I wager this will be less of a problem than normal.

You are having a discussion with the flaggots that have killed accounts and driven a lot of people away. More circle jerk crap.
