Steemit's Great Missed Opportunity

in #steemit6 years ago (edited)

When YouTube started demonetizing everyone, Steemit's leadership utterly failed to follow up by pursuing those YouTubers who had become upset with the platform and/or could no longer make serious money from it.

Some YouTubers came to this site on their own, in fact, I followed The Amazing Atheist, aka @tjkirk , to this site back in January. However, Steemit had an amazing opportunity to pull in way more major YouTubers after the adpocalypse, adpocalypse 2 etc. Steemit would not only allow these YouTubers to continue monetizing their content, but also crosspost, so that the videos could be on both Steemit and YouTube. This would have allowed the YouTubers to maintain their normal presence to their subscribers, while also making more money and being able to speak their mind without worrying about being totally demonetized.

So how is it that Steemit seems to have attracted nearly no other YouTubers when there are so many clear advantages?

First, Steemit's uploader on DTube, the associated video service, is utter garbage. It can not upload in HD, which has been standard on most sites for nearly a decade now, and it doesn't even work half the time. For a YouTuber who needs to constantly create and upload videos this is unacceptable and simply not worth the time to 1. export an SD version of the HD video, and 2. mess around with an uploader that would have been outdated in 2006.

Additionally, Steemit's leadership simply did not put in the effort, or perhaps did not have the creativity, to pursue these YouTubers. Steemit could have been contacting these people directly, advertising on their videos, emailing them, commenting on their videos, running ads on various other online platforms to catch their attention, maybe offering special deals or promotions, etc. But none of that happened as far as I can tell.

Gaining these major YouTubers as members would have given Steemit the chance to succeed that it has always needed by giving us more quality content, more membership, more legitimacy in the eyes of the internet at large, and a ton of essentially free advertising. Now the question is, why didn't Steemit's leadership take advantage of this situation?

Do they still have a chance to take advantage of how unhappy many YouTubers are with Google's bullshit? I think they may, or at the very least will probably have another shot in the future when YouTube inevitably does something else stupid. However, I have little faith Steemit will follow up on that opportunity as they should - or with any sense of aggression or urgency.

Agreed!
We have been trying out the platform as a band as well as using our youtube.
What is interesting is there are a lot of creators and hardly any consumers.
Makes it a little hard to get anyone to notice your posts!

Yeah! It seems reasonable to me to use both. On the surface it seems like Steemit is actually very similar to YouTube, in that everybody has the ability to be both a user and a creator of content. The problem comes from the fact that people on Steemit seem to mostly focus on being creators and there are few pure consumers. Those that don't create much too often just leave after a couple weeks or so. That is yet another major weakness that needs to be addressed soon if this platform is going to work out.
