Steemit - A newbie's guide - Part 1
A Newbie's Guide Part 1
As I am not so new anymore, but still fresh. I can relate to what happens to someone new who thrown in here.
(Source: steemit.com)
Steem, Steem Power, SBD, Vests, upvoting, downvoting, powering up, powering down, minnows, dolphins, whales and maybe even sharks!?
(Source steemit.com)
Well, I decided to make a little guide for the newbies to make it a little more comfortable for them.
What kind of fish are you?
Normally, when you start here, you are a "Minnow", don't worry it's what they call you.
Accounts with less than 5000 Steem Power are called Minnows, nothing less, nothing more...
So don't feel small, most of us are Minnows, there's nothing wrong with that.
When you gather more than 5000 Steem Power, you are considered an "Dolphin".
More than 50000 Steem Power makes you officially a "Whale".

How and what can I earn here?
Simple, you earn when you share quality content through posts or comments and they get upvoted. The amount of Steem Power vested by the upvoter(s) and the percentage of their upvote determines how much you earn for that post or comment.
You get paid in a combination of Steem Backed Dollars and Steem, exactly 7 days later. You can choose to change the pay-out to a 100 % in SBD or 100 % Steem, before you submit the post. This can not be done with comments!
A second way you earn is through Steem Power, actually by "Vesting" your Steem into Steem Power. It's called "Powering Up". Look at it, as if you are depositing money into a savings account. You put it there and it increases the amount of your upvote. So the more Steem Power, the more your upvote is worth and in consequence, the more followers you will gain, as they will be eager for your upvote on their posts.
Your Steem Power also brings in intrest as it is Vested, today the inflation-rate is +/- 9 %. So your Steem Power gives you an intrest too. Not bad hey. Don't worry too much about the inflation rate, it is designed to drop gradually, and in 20 years will stay at 1 % forever.

Conclusion: Be active on the platform by posting, upvoting and commenting to gain followers and by doing so, gaining more Steem Power, because if you want to earn, you have to Power Up!
In Part 2 I will talk about boosting your upvotes by using bots, self-voting, upvoting and curation...
Sincerely,
Upvoted on behalf of the dropAhead Curation Team!
Your post will be Resteemed by @dropahead witness account of the dropAhead curation team!
Watch out for the #xx-votesplus tag!
By doing the above you will give us more STEEM POWER (SP) to give YOU more earnings next time.
Keep up the good work!

hahah your post is very good Say we like newborns can not walk so that one day we will definitely be a whale too.
I upvoted as I this is a great little guide for those who dont know.
The issue of self upvoting is here again.
@pele23 when is it right to self upvote our posts?
Does self upvoting not cheat the system?
The steemit community is growing and more and more minnows are coming in everyday, for them to survive here and for the system to be sustained, they should be inductrinated correctly.
I will appreciate answers to my questions. Thank you!
I will come to that in the next part. But my answer to your question. Yes, for me there is no issue with that. I upvote my own posts, as I find them quality content. But, I do upvote loads of other people too, and that's the issue. Only self-upvoting is just plain stupid, as you miss curation rewards and you will not attract followers. I hope your question is answered.
Excellent post by the way. I've been here a few weeks now, and have already learned new things from your post.
In my view, it's perfect ok to upvote oneself's post. Just be careful not to upvote your own comments too soon, as you may miss out on voting bots doing it for you.
Comments I don't upvote for myself that often... Indeed if you comment through eSteem you can get some bots to upvote you!
I haven't looked into eSteem yet. Maybe I should. It's a mobile app, right?
Yep, for the moment, it's the only mobile option for Steemit.
Thanks for the info. This comment was actually written in the eSteem mobile app. Testing it to see what it's like. So far the thing I miss the most is my feed. Can't seem to find it anywhere, but maybe it's just that I haven't looked carefully enough.
I found it. It was right there staring at me.
I see on their webpage that they'll launch a webapp soon. That will be a major improvement, as we then can access it both from our mobile phone, as well at an ordinary web browser.
My question was perfectly answered. Looking forward to your next post then. I will appreciate being tagged so i can follow through. Thanks!
Great info! Thanks! Didn't know some of that stuff! Just followed you! Looking forward to part 2!
Nice post @pele23. Thanks nice information provided.
Nice post @pele23. there is good information for the "Minnow", as I actually am.
Thanks a lot.
excellent explanation, thanks
Nice simple explanations! Wish I had seen them a month ago - or even better 18 months ago!!
Cheers
You're welcome! I
Good post! Still in the minnow zone, but working towards being a whale. Upvoted, but I don't think it's worth anything yet.
Don't worry about that, any upvote is an upvote!
