Was the name "STEEMIT" a mistake?

in #steemit6 years ago (edited)

These last few days ive been browsing quite a bit around the interwebs reading up on the censorship fallout that happened because STEEMIT.INC decided to ban @thedarkoverlord from the STEEMIT platform.
I have been looking at Reddit, reading various news articles and i noticed something we all knew was going on but would have to wait until STEEM makes the news to see it out on the open. So, we made the news.

Generally, crypto enthusiasts, crypto news readers even crypto journalists do not differentiate STEEMIT from STEEM. This is so obviously true that i have to question how smart of a decision it was to call the first app ever built on the STEEM blockchain "STEEMIT".
Sure, it might have made sense at the time but as we can see now, it might not have been the best move .

Let me show you a few screenshots of what im talking about.

This first quote is from an article on Cryptoslate.com that talks in-depth about the banning controversy. LINK.

And mind you, this was left in even after the edit of the article, that happened once a number of Steemians in the comments pointed out the numerous mistakes written.
Even journalists that write about cryptocurrencies do not differentiate STEEMIT from STEEM. This journalist might be a special case since this paragraph makes little to no sense, but you can still see he parallels Bitcoin to STEEMIT. A blockchain and a application.

Heres another example from Reddit. LINK
Sure, this could be seen simply as FUD but the problem is that it is even possible to spread FUD this way.

I could find many other examples but i think this shows the problem more then clearly. I noticed @themarkymark jump in into the Reddit thread and calmly deal with the misinformation regarding STEEM.
It seems that is the only way we can fix this mix up. By going out and dealing with any misinformation calmly.

Still, if it was possible it would be nice if Ned changed the name of STEEMIT to something that doesnt have STEEM in its name. Fuck it.... Just call it BOB.

Ill see you around. Keep on Steeming.

Sort:

I take issue with your proposal to rename Steemit as merely "Bob". I reckon such a move would not do justice to either Steemit nor to Bob. I would suggest you consider "Kevin" instead. Or perhaps "Stuart". These strike me as altogether more appropriate alternatives. Thank you. :-D

Haha. You might be right.

I have often wondered the same thing and doesn't it also make you question whether those journalists really know what they are writing about? How can we trust anything they write?

They obviously dont know. :D
haha. Still, this kind of publicity isnt great.

Link to the reddit thread would be appreciated to comment on it.

Sure. Added in the post as well. LINK

Or let's call it Nedit.😀

On a serious note, yes, it's misleading. By the way, would it be a wise decision to rebrand our entire blockchain and give it some other name?
