Steemit vs. Facebook — The Tide is Turning!

in #steemit6 years ago (edited)

We have the first results of Facebook's determined “struggle against fake news”. And, as a Steemit member, you can put up your best smile of satisfaction :)

After being exposed as an ultimate platform for disseminating terrorist propaganda and fake news, and as the greatest online opioids market, Facebook “improved” the system by effectively imposing censorship. With all of this, selling fake followers to a desperate people, and tracking everyone with official ID sounds like a petty crimes.

After all these “brilliant” moves, the results have come up: in the last quarter, collective time Facebook users spend on the platform is reduced by about 5%, or 50 million hours a day, or some 700,000 active users less.

But that really doesn't matter, says Mark Sucker… Zuckerberg, because he actually has increased advertising profit by 61%! Less sheep, more shearing!

And he already has a new plan: After a user views a piece of news, Facebook is now going to ask them if that news is true or not! If it sounds too unbelievable, The Resident will break it down for you :)

I wouldn't be so quick to say that the tide is turning, rather, recent events may have led to a down tick in Facebook's monstrous growth.

I think Steemit and Facebook serve two widely different social media markets, and as much as I hate to admit it, some form of centralization may be necessary for Steemit to become success. While the idea of a decentralized social media platform sounds nice, without moderators you have a worthless trending section, a hot section dominated by whales, and a new section oversaturated with random pictures of flowers and miscellaneous market reports. From the time I've been on Steemit, it's been very difficult to find good content from new users.

And while whales do occasionally put out good stuff, only seeing content from these whales can get tiresome. Steemit needs a way to foster a diversity of content and minimize the number of "shit posts" that crowd the site.

They who can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety.
— Benjamin Franklin

They who can give up decentralization to obtain a little easier search for temporary good content deserve neither decentralization nor good content. They deserve Facebook.
@lighteye

What has me personally turning away from Facebook is the absurd quantity of advertising, re-posted one-liner memes, and "suggested content." It no longer serves its purpose to keep in touch with people, except through its messenger program.

And, of course, there's the whole lack of regard for personal information and security...

I have been a member of Facebook since 2005 and I joined steemit in June. I no longer use Facebook and it really had nothing to do with the money. The platform is so much better.

Every. Single. Way.

Tip!

Thank you very much, @dswigle, for your feedback, the tip and support. It's true, I've never found anything good in facebook, and that really doesn't have anything with the money… micropayments are just a nice plus at Steemit, but they certainly could not make f*book content better :)

My pleasure!

I'm starting to be really happy I decided to take a break from Facebook a while back.

Just ignore FaceBook
it will eventually go away
or not.
I really couldn't care less.

I also couldn't care less for Facebook, @everittdmickey. But there are a lot of people there. I care for them as I would care for a shipwrecks in the ocean. You cannot say “just ignore ocean, it will eventually go away“. You are trying to save as much shipwrecks as you can :)

I also get the impression that most kids these days want something a little more instantaneous that wouldn't appeal to their parents. Facebook seems to also be up to some dirty secret tricks with its echo chamber effects, preventing people from seeing posts made by friends with opposing/right wing political views.

It will be easier for the newbie kids to make a right choice, than for those who were hooked to f*book at the very beginning of the “centralized social platform” idea, @buffersmckyle.

Whatever they do falls in the same line: Censorship. YouTube, Google Search, Google Adsense, Twitter, Instagram (FB again), LinkedIn (Microsoft), Reddit and Digg... All of them have adopted similar 'algorithms' to prioritize some sources and suppress others.

Those seeking other than the examples the lady mentioned in the video above like make up tutorials, narcotics, fake news, cat videos.. will go elsewhere searching for truth and reliable sources. We just need more exposure for Steemit and alike, and to better work out some of the features here to make it more connected and relevant to also filter properly what we need to watch in the main feed.

As all centralized platforms, with the success they inevitably must slide into corruption, @arabisouri. Thanks for your support.
