I wonder what would happen if a bunch of people just hit other social media sites with Ads for steemit. Not breaking any of their TOS, doing it "by the book" but just dozens or even more people all dropping a bomb on these other sites exposing it's users to Steemit all in one swoop.
I have no idea but here are some thoughts:
Chances are the ads would go through at first and then get terminated shortly after which would bring another idea up and that is re-targeting with a clever spin. (Yes I'm an advertising nerd, please don't hold it against me... I come in peace)
Anyway, just a thought that's been rattling around in my brain recently.

This is a democratic community decision.
Once advertising companies wrap their heads around what Steemit is there will be a lot of soiled underwear. Steemit may well become the largest social media platform in history... and it needs exactly zero advertising to thrive and grow.
That said, greed makes the world go round. Dolphins and whales will soon be getting solicited to post and upvote advertisements and it will be up to the community to decide whether to support or shun them.

I imagine there's gonna be and probably already are bunch of users who just signed up who know nothing about Bitcoin or liquid Steem. They grabbed the free Steem and are trying to make more by making content as I speak. Now imagine the price of steem when they all finally decide to invest outside money.
i did send it my btc and converted them to Steempower. yeah it locks me in for 2 years, but i had that small bitcoin amount for a long time. so i am ok with be locked into steempower now.
Smart move! The compound interest we receive from Steem Power is a really powerful way to create wealth.
Guilty as charged. I signed up, took a few days to wrap my head around the awesomeness, and then immediately traded in my BTC for STEEM. Then I figured out the awesomeness of Steem Power and immediately traded in my STEEM for SP. I suspect many will follow the same path in the coming months - be interesting to see if there is any impact on BTC price.

Anyways, this explosion is the very reason why new signups to Steemit had to be stopped for the moment. Hope people are able to join soon!

And they DID REALLY pause signups. I logged out and tried to signup again. And there was a message saying "Signups are currently paused due to our unexpectedly high sign up rate. Submit your email to the waiting list to be notified when signups are re-opened."
Sooooo, yeah! We are the lucky ones who got in early before a wave of a HUGE number of people will flood in!
