I just spent 30 minutes downvoting 7 posts from a plagiaristic spammer. Please take time to do the same.
This is a ongoing problem, that all of us have a duty to solve and we need your help.
This isn't a problem that is going to go away. Which means this is a duty of all steem users that never goes away either.
As more and more people join steemit, I'd say 1 out of every 20 thinks they have found a way to cheat the system by reposting content. Which means that 5% of all new users start out by deliberately copy/pasting pieces of the internet, and reposting it.
5%? That's not much? Just so you know, 5% of 30,000 is 1500 active spam reposters!
I refer to it as "SPAM REPOSTS".
We know what spam is on the internet. It's basically "junk".
The problem is that the repost often contains good content found elsewhere on the internet.
Reposting existing content in the steem blockchain from the internet has these problems:
- It clogs the blockchain and attributes to the endless scroll problem I've talked about
- It lowers the value of steemit as a community and a resource whole.
- It helps ruin the vesting steem power capabilities of all of us over time.
- It shows other new users "hey! that person did it! I'm going to do it too!" (We don't want that)
- Not only is it stealing, it is morally wrong. The reposter knows it, and doesn't care.
- It wastes time by having to scroll over these "spam reposts". I don't want to have to scan through them to find good quality, unique, content to read. Nor do 30,000 other steemit users.
Please don't take the stance, that "someone else" will take the time to downvote spam reposts. I did it, and I was simply only one downvote, we need more, to really show how wrong it is.
The cheaters think "even if I make a few cents, I'll just repost as much as I can". It is our job to downvote as many of them as we can too. This way, they don't make a few cents on their spam.
Eventually cheaters will learn that it takes more time to do spam reposts than it would if they had just written their own unique article from scratch. ... BUT! Only if we downvote their spam!
- If we allow spam reposters to flourish, they are going to keep hurting steemit.
- Spam reposts hurt YOUR potential to see your steem power worth something if you ever power down your vested balance (typically 2 years).
- I get hurt by spam reposters... and so do you.
Take a few seconds of your day to downvote a few bad reposts. You are helping yourself when you do that, not just me.
If you've ever earned even $10 off of steemit, the right thing is to pay it forward by volunteering some time to downvoting spam reposts. We all benefit when you do!
If this article has inspired you to downvote, or if you have ever downvoted, please share your comments, so it doesn't sound like I'm the only one concerned about this.. (thank you).
P.S. The concern that "if I downvote someone", they're going to downvote me too. That happened with my viral post that I earned a lot of money from. I got one retaliatory downvote from @jacobt, and 450 upvotes, and I made over $1800. So don't worry about that... It is an insignificant issue. Conversely, upvoting what you want other people to see we already know is important.
every-time i get the chance i down vote these bots, but why "wang" wont go away. I have down voted this guy like 20 times already, i dont get it.
Oh, he's a comment bot who welcomes new users. I have do more research on that..
Wang is not so bad bro.
Question... how do you downvote? It's not very intuitive honestly. Is it the flag icon next to your post?
I'm about to put 50K steem in SP and downvote the SHIT out of some people, including those who spam tags to completely unrelated topics. I was just browsing the "Investment" section and the top post I see is about some dude travelling....
Spammers, trolls, plagiarists should be downvoted.
And yes, to downvote, it's the Flag on the top right of the post. Even replies/comments can also be downvoted.
Yes, it is the little red flag up the near the top of someone's story. When I downvote, I often will post a reason why in the comments, so other people acknowledge it has been downvoted for a "reason".
We have been seeing reposts. So the flag is a downvote icon? Still new to the site.
I wouldn't be too concerned about retaliatory downvotes as these spammers have such low amounts of steem power that their votes are insignificant compared to someone who is actually using the platform properly and has accumulated a decent amount of steem power.
Problem is that @jacobt has $2,700+ steem power, more than me. I just didn't like his circlejerk post because I thought it was insulting, rude, and referring to sexual inuendos in his title wasn't appropriate behavior. He in turn retaliated and voted down my post talking about how the developers are working hard to fix things. Even "with" a significant amount of steem power, jacobt couldn't stop my post from going virual (nor could I, with his)
So it's good news that even if they do accumulate a decent amount of steem power, retaliatory downvotes aren't too harmful either.
Collectively though, if a post gets multiple downvotes, that's when things change.
That's a good point and why I think only reserve the downvote/flag for true spam like copy and pasted material, but if someone posts original content that you don't like just simply ignore it and move along, this way you don't get the retaliation and that person doesn't get your upvote.
I will NEVER down vote a post because I dislike it. Only for plagiarism and forcing people to see stuff like and porn as their intro gif (stuff I can't opt into because it is the gif) or the same with something really graphic and violent without a warning and letting me opt in.
Down vote because I disagree with a point or think someone is an ass is an abuse of downvoting IMO.
Well a huge post calling everyone on steemit part of a circlejerk fest IMO was more than just being an ass. It was a graphic and violent picture in my mind without a warning and letting me opt in. It also NSFW to have circlejerking on the screen, even if it doesn't accompany an actual porn image. But that's what steemit is all about, our own opinions. We just see if anyone agrees or not. :)
P.S. He also removed the excessive profanity, the vulgar meme I pointed out, and other stuff, so I looked stupid afterwards. But the original post, unique or not, was pretty awful. It then went viral after he cleaned it.
So in the end, he won. :)
Just as me trying to convince you why i think #6 is wrong in your faq post. Thats one of the things that group voting could address. IE, protecting people who downvote spam from retaliatory downvotes. And yeah, i know your post went viral regardless, but if jacob had been just a little faster on the draw, it might have been hidden before it had a chance to do so (or if it was someone with more power that you pissed off)
You're doing a great thing for this community. But many of the new users are reticent to downvote because they have little Steem Power.
To be completely honest, I wrote this article for the baby whales that have greater than $2500 worth of steem power. Many of them are posting about how well they have done by posting (to earn more steem power).
I decided to write a not-so-popular article today after my latest windfall. It was my way of giving back. I don't expect this particular article to earn more than $25 today.
Hopefully some new baby whales will also take a few seconds to help downvote junk too. (..and take a break from posting to try and dominate the place).
That's what I'm doing.. just writing comments and upvoting other posts. I don't want to go viral today.
you should checkout #doyourpart
Cool! I never saw that tag before. Really cool posts in there!
spammers are like germs , they are every where , i do what i can to get them of here , here is my post today about spam : https://steemit.com/steemit/@ben99/who-is-worst-spammers-and-bot-or-whales
my first thought was it would be quite funny if someone plagiarized this post
I ask please that you see my post https://steemit.com/crowdfunding/@webocel/58kd3g-my-dream-needs-your-vote-crowdfunding, with your vote I can put my business and thus have a job and be able to feed my children. With just a few clicks you can change my life. Thanks in advance. Nicolas
Prime example of something that needs a downvote, and I did it. Wrong place to post this @webocel
