Getting Into The Top 1,000 Steemians - How Feasible Is It?

Over the last few days I’ve been cruising the Steem blockchain, digging into a wide range of insightful posts. A few favorites:

@lexikon082 Celebrating 2 Months of Sobriety
https://steemit.com/life/@lexikon082/alcoholism-celebrating-two-months-of-sobreity-by-helping-someone-i-care-for

@stackin goes crazy and buys even more Steem Power
https://steemit.com/life/@stackin/am-i-nuts-why-did-i-just-buy-more-steem-power

But the post that really got my attention was this:

@nepd Celebrates Becoming a Top 1,000 Steemian!
https://steemit.com/steem/@nepd/movin-on-up-just-broke-into-the-top-1000-in-steem-power-according-to-steemwhales-com

….damn!

It made me realize that I’ve been thinking pretty small. I know I want to do well on Steemit, but the top 1k seems like such a big thing. There are a lot of really influential and awesome people here. Could I reach the upper echelons?

Clear goals are the essence of achievement. Knowing where you are headed is the first step towards getting there. I’ve been running as fast as I can, but with no destination in mind!

Being a Top 1,000 Steemian

Imagine meeting somebody on the street. They seem like an average person. Then they say an amazing fact: They run one of the top 1,000 most popular Facebook pages.

You might be shocked. I’d be starstruck. Top 1k on Facebook? That’s huge as fuck!

Now let's focus back on Steem: We aren’t as big as Facebook now. I’ll go ahead and be honest, I do not think we will ever “topple” FB, they’re too well established to be taken down barring a major blunder by Zuckerburg and crew.

But even if Steemit grew to 1% of Facebook’s size, we would have many millions of users. By the time that happens, Steem will be worth way more than it is now - but it will split up into many more pieces.

The time to achieve great dreams on Steem is NOW! Becoming a top 1,000 user doesn’t seem too crazy here, but it might be out of reach in another few years.

How Hard Is It To Get There?

A quick glance at steemwhales.com shows the following user at #1,000:

It takes a little bit more than 6,000 SP to be in the top 1k right now.

I’ve been sitting at 1.5k SP for the last month or two due to power downs. I’ve been converting that money into USD to pay off bills and debts.

It would be amazing to get into the top 1,000 users by SP within 2017. I’d really feel like an important member of the community at that point.

From my current position, I’d need to add an average of 23 Steem Power per day. 23 Steem per day is ambitious but doable if I were to 100% power up all of my posts…

Downsides of the 1k Quest

…but the problem is simple. I’m about $20k in debt from credit cards and a loan. It would probably be irresponsible to invest so heavily in Steem, even though I love this place, while I’ve got debts accruing interest every month.

@nepd pointed this out to me in his comment from the other post:

Paying interest on debt is the opposite of the rich person’s financial style. The financially intelligent move is to collect interest via smart investing. Paying interest, on the other hand, is how you toil away for a lifetime while making somebody else rich.

I might strike a balance - I’ll avoid powering down for the rest of the year*, but cash out my 50% of liquid steem rewards each week. It’s unlikely to get me into the top 1,000, but it’s better than nothing.

At least it’s fun to think about. Once my debts are paid, it’s TO THE MOON!

*I’m in power down mode right now, ironically, because I want to buy an ergonomic keyboard… 8+ hours per day of typing/guitar/drumming = carpal tunnel vibes. But my hands are feeling better than a few days ago, so I might cancel the power down.

As Steemit heads to the moon it will take all of us with it. I'm excited to see what HF 19 does for all of us. Top 1k won't matter in a few months be top 10k or 20k 😊

HF19 is. Gonna. Rule. I cannot wait!!

And you're right - as steem keeps gaining value, even top 10k will be amazing :-D

Steem on to the moon 😊

I know how you feel! But I think you're doing the right thing here. I'm almost in the same boat as you. I want to invest big in Steem because I belive in it so much, but got other things in the way.

We can only invest what we have, right? Thanks for the support.

Thanks for the mention and will gladly help you up the mountain!

I'm still learning this whole new world of Steemit. I'd be thrilled at $5 a day to start ... but top 1k is a good future goal!

Hey, we all gotta start somewhere! Good luck on getting to $5 per day, that is a very reasonable goal. Especially if you do some smart commenting.

I had carpal tunnel problems, and solution is to get hands stronger. Maybe do pushups, I know it will hurt but as it gets stronger you will not have problems with it. At time I was having problem I was playing piano a lot and it was very important to not have any problem with my hands. Good luck with debt!

I'm not sure that you are right about this. Carpal Tunnel generally needs rest above all else...

Hmm when it happens yes you must wait till it go away after few days and then get your hands stronger. One more thing about cause of carpal is your position when you sleep ( sleeping on side). I am telling you from my own experience, at that time I was very concerned because I was pianist and was practising and playing for 6-8 hours a day and care of my hands and arm were on my top priority . I didn't have carpal problems for last few years so that speaks for itself. Hope it will help you.

Do you have any resources from experts that talk about the pushups thing? It just goes against everything I understand about carpal tunnel.

The sleep thing makes sense - I've had some friends wear those wrist braces while they sleep. Thanks for the tips

Well I mentioned pushup as an example, you could do anything as long as your wrist gets stronger. I had carpal tunnel problems from time to time for few years when one day one colleague pianist told me that it is because of weakness in strength so I get my hands stronger and problems stop. I don't have any studies just my own personal experience. Maybe there are different carpal tunnels, I don't know. Just do what you feel is right!

It might be that you will be as huge in a year as top 1000 on steemit now. Because currently steemit is growing at such a pace that we will hit 1 million by the end of the year. Even I might be top 10% by that time and I just started 2 weeks ago. And if the growth slows down our community will still be a lot bigger by the end of the year.

You are right that there are great things ahead :-D it's not just about the money or the size though.. it's about being in the TOP ONE THOUSAND which is just so rad!!

You need to consider the relativity. 1000th of 1001 is not that good. 1000th of 200 000 is 0.5%. You will most likely be at 0.5% if you keep your progress up :)

I'm new on Steemit, only been her about 3 weeks. Gaining in on a hundred followers already and I certainly have a niche. I'm a world traveler, I've been living out of a backpack for over ten years. My Travel reports seem to be what people like most . I've been told I'll go far here.

That being said, I see you have been on here since January, and you are a real inspiration to people like me. I really find your post insightful into what this platform offers. The ones who have gotten in early and have stuck with it have really made out quite well. I still consider "now", as early. I'm excited to share a platform like this with such an inquiring mind like yourself.

Being new, I won't lie I'm mixing my curating, with a little shameless plugs. People find my work well written and of high quality. From a total newbie writing to someone with much more experience, I'd love for you to check out my latest travel report. Would mean a lot to this minnow. I write from a budget travelers perspective. I don't sugar coat, and talk about how great everything is. I think you'll enjoy my raw honesty. Here's my latest work https://steemit.com/travel/@world-travel-pro/world-travel-report-paradise-hot-spot-lake-atitlan-guatemala
Sunday night will be "World Travel Report: Panama", a little spoiler, it doesn't get good reviews at all. Will be an interesting read for sure.

Normally I don't write so much about myself in a reply, but your post really got me thinking about my future on this site as well. You see some people's wallets, Bam! over 100k in value in less than a year. So impressive. To anyone really serious on this platform like you and I, I believe hitting whale status is a dream come true.

Up-votted and following. Thank you for sharing, you really lit my brain on fire with this post. Have a great day! -World Travel Pro

So....I have to go 11000 more ...ok..ok..

I'll race ya there

You know your post started me to thinking that having a goal is a great idea. I didn't join to make a lot of money, but it sure would be nice too. I joined to get the value of interaction with different people. My first goal needs to be learning how to use the HTML and editor. Thanks for the value in your post. ALOHA!!!

I want to be a whale.
