TIL... Now I'm REALLY Frustrated With the STEEMIT User Interface!😤steemCreated with Sketch.

A few days ago, I appealed for help with the User Interface...

I have really wanted one feature that was promised in HF17 but not delivered, ability to edit posts beyond the arbitrary one-month "expiration" date. And so I wrote a post:

🆘I'm Still Jonesing For That "Edit" Button! - Please???🆘

I tried to be clear and respectful. I tried to recount the history and promise leading up to HF17, and tried to describe what I was looking for as well as I could.

Not only have I not received any substantive answer, but,

Today I learned that the situation is worse than ever before!

I discovered that I can't even edit a post older than a week! :(

Is this the straw that broke the camel's back?

Seriously?

Once again I'll speculate a tiny bit. I'm guessing that when HF17 was released, the code for the 24hr payout was removed, and the code for the 30 day payout was reduced to 7 days.... BUT ALONG WITH IT, THE "EDIT" time was ALSO reduced to 7 days!!!😣

I find this extremely frustrating.

I've tried to continue producing quality content, to create value for Steemit during the past month. All I've seen since HF17 is vastly diminished rewards and now the opposite of what was promised, making it more difficult to edit posts.

Would someone handling the daily releases please take a minute to fix this?

PLEASE deliver the promised ability to edit posts? This was discussed before the release of HF17 and HF18. This was promised.

Please make good on this promise?

If you personally work on this, Please take action?

If you know who is responsible for this, would you please pass the word?

To whomever may be able to make this happen ASAP,

Thank You in advance, seriously, thank you.

Thanks for your time and attention.
You are why I'm here on Steemit!
I have very eclectic interests and hope, over time, to write about them all.

I thought restrictions on edit were removed with HF18.
That's terrible. So, it's just 7 days for rewards and for editing :(

Yes, it is really annoying me right now!

I'm not typically a "complainer," but the frustration has built up... Sort of like having a carrot dangled in front of my eyes, and then yanked away! :O

Thanks for stopping by and cheering me up, friend! Love the GIF! :) :) :D

It is by design. You can't and shouldn't be able to edit material that has already been presented and rewarded. Then change it after the fact. I am not sure why you find this that annoying, just because it is a blockchain and censor resistant, it changes the way some features work.
Sorry to hear how annoying you are finding it.

No, I'm not sure you grasp the original intent of the design? And please see my earlier response to your earlier comment.

I meant to mention that the promises of ability to edit perpetually are documented in my previous article here:

🆘I'm Still Jonesing For That "Edit" Button! - Please???🆘

If you have other references to the contrary, other discussion threads, I would appreciate seeing any links you may be able to supply, Thanks! :) :D

Sadly there never were any official posts about the features that were changed and left out of HF17. On a brighter note, at least they are pumping up the communication. A lesson learned the hard way. By the way, I edited my last comment after you responded. I wasn't even trying to prove a point, but just keep that in mind as you consider the whys of editting. :) Take care my friend.

So, I see you've just then exercised your human right to revise what you've said, i.e. to clarify possible misperceptions? ;) :D

I believe the benefit of the original author being able to do so strongly outweighs the slight potential of problems... :D

Hey, THANK YOU for a very stimulating and constructive discussion, my friend! :) :) :)

You too! Enjoyed our talk.. ;)

One can not edit material after the voting period by design. It isn't fair to make posts, receive rewards on the material and then change it after the fact.
I heard this discussed many times.

I'm not sure what you mean by "not fair?" I'd appreciate further explanation of your thinking here...

However, my viewpoint is based on the following observations:

  • The ability to edit in perpetuity was promised to be part of the last Hard Fork (HF17).
  • Nothing is "changed after the fact." The reality of Steemit is that everything is stored on the blockchain; therefore, it is always possible to examine the entire history of a post. Changes cannot be hidden or denied.
  • As a human being, I am fallible. I make errors in what I write. I reserve the right to edit them. If I am prevented from doing so, I will be forced to re-issue a corrected version. There is no moral difference between doing that and simply revising an older piece, but the practical difference is very frustrating.
  • As an author, I write my work, my work does not write me. I am the creator and amendor, and will change and improve and modify what I write to my own liking.
  • Finally (for now ;) I have practical reasons for desiring this ability; I create and maintain indices and references to my own body of work, as well as tools for facilitating my own manual voting, planning future articles, and so on. Without the ability to edit, these goals are hampered.

I hope that clarifies matters?

Sure, it isn't a big deal to me. I was only explaining the conversations that were had when each feature of HF17 were discussed and reviewed and many of the features were withheld from the drop due to community discussion. I was just trying to explain why you haven't seen the changes. ;)
I know you wouldn't do this, but what if I posted a cute kitten picture and people voted on it. Later I went back and edited and made a pornographic picture. Voting is now off, and there is no way to flag or hide it. (just sharing a thought) Any who, they are not my decisions.

Thank you, @whatsup, for your further explanation of your issue with being editable...

I think I understand better now where you're coming from. And of course, I would find the behavior you just described to be completely disgusting and reprehensible... However, I am of the very strong opinion that prohibiting editing is not the solution to behavior like that...

The answer to that kind of nastiness is to flag the hell out of it. Also discussed in some places, and perhaps not properly settled, was the real need to separate "voting" whether up or down from "flagging" semantically, i.e. to have a separate function called "flag" that would be a way to disapprove of such antisocial behavior as you've described...

Agree on all fronts, again, I am not communicating well, as I was just trying to clarify why the decision was made, not so much justify it. I could probably argue it both ways. :)

:) :) :) Got it. Thanks again! ;) :D

UH, yeah.... Selah. Pause and think deeply about that my friend :)

< DEEP Sigh! >

Agreed 100%. I am preparing to create an offline archive of everything I have written to date just so I can edit in a word processor for now, and perhaps later upload the changes when this is fixed.

Sounds like a reasonable temporary patch...

One of the things that frustrates me is how trivial this fix is likely to be...

Maybe I'm just not bringing this up in the proper forum? Even so, you'd hope that Steemit the company might at least notice appeals tagged with #steemit? :(

I will probably eventually make a spreadsheet with dates, titles, links, file locations, and subject notes so I can better manage what I have written. I have some vague notions of cleaning up and expanding some of them for a self-published book. Who knows.

Sounds like a fine project... Good luck with that! ;)

Agreed. I'm sure if it was announced, it'll come. There are a few things I need to edit as well, so I look forward to having a chance to do so. I don't consider my work dead just because the reward period is over. I still want people to see a lot of it, and I want it to be perfect.

Well said...

It just can't come soon enough! :O

Just pretend you're waiting for the right wave. You'll get through these ripples.

Hahahahaha.... Good work! Appeal to the surfer in me! :)

I guess I may not be as patient as I imagine myself to be.... The bible says "Tribulation works patience," and so perhaps this is just one more exercise to improve mine... ;)

Thanks for weighing in, my friend @nonameslefttouse!

I've always considered myself to be a patient person... until I become impatient. What is life without room for improvement? Have a good day.

Yeah...

I just can't wait to become more patient! ;)
