Why Are There Bandwidth Issues?

in #steemit7 years ago

No, seriously, why? I don't have any answers to the bandwidth issues, Just a lot of questions I'm hoping someone can answer. Here are some of them.

  1. What is bandwidth as it pertains to my fellow steemians?

  2. How is bandwidth apportioned?

  3. Why are our newest members, the ones we need to be encouraging to stay, the minnows or plankton or whatever they are these days, the ones most likely to be hit by a shortage of bandwidth?

  4. You dolphins and whales, how would you like this?
    >I want to post this wonderful article.
    >You can't.
    >But it's the cure for breast cancer.
    >Don't care.
    >It will save/improve millions of women's lives.
    >Not my problem.
    >Why?
    >Because you are insignificant.
    >Would it make any difference if it was the cure for testicular cancer?
    >Go talk to Pfizer.

  5. Does anybody give a rat's arse?

Trust me, I'm a doctor.

Steembd shows your bandwidth from what I can see its similar to vp.

Personally i never had any issues with it.

New users do have a tenancy to spam their pages with resteems, low quality content, revision and edits of their posts all that takes bandwith.

I would guess it was put in place to limit active spammers.

As with everything steem there is a huge learning curve and getting past it is the first point in proof of brain that drives the platform.

Active spammers indeed, but it seems to me they are throwing out the baby with the bathwater. Not only that, but every time the spammer gets through the bandwidth wall he gets a little stronger. Since he is constantly pushing his crap even if a lot of it gets blocked he'll still get way more posts made than the average newbie. Therefore, the newbie gets held back by the bandwidth shortage caused in part be the spammer who is now free to spread more of his garbage.

Assuming your theory is correct of course.

When I was starting out last October people were doing shitty posts like 4-5 times a day and they were resteeming articles like there was no tomorrow.

Nowadays even commenting is hard for redfishes/planktons like us because of bandwidth issues. I get it we have so many new accounts and we only have so much bandwidth that can be given to people.

We should go after the shit posters, the spammers and the plagiarists and I am doing my part by reporting them to Steemcleaners. I get a nice SP bounty and they get flagged. I wish it could removed their SP so that they will have less bandwidth to post and spam comments.

Current work around we have is for the higher SP leveled members they delegate some 15-50 SP to help out.

The only band width I'm familiar with would be my hat band, other than that I couldn't answer your questions. But it must be becoming a bigger issue because I have seen several people raising questions but few answers provided.

That is what I've been seeing. Lots of questions but a paucity of answers.

Trust me, I'm a doctor.

The bandwidth is the result of Steemit's growing popularity and it's split based on VESTS. You can find your number of VESTS here www.steemd.com/@catweasel
Basically it prefers to silence the people that contributed the least to Steemit instead of silencing proven posters. It's not a perfect solution, since no whale needs 500mb of bandwidth for text only, since images and other media is stored somewhere on a fixed place outside of the blockchain. Perhaps as the added value to Steemit increases, and the token also increases ( STEEM and SBD ), the whole Steem blockchain will gain new nodes and thus, speed and bandwidth.

TLDR: Bad temporary fix due to high steemit interest. It's beta!
Happy to be of service, Alex, programmer!

My last article is about the health impacts of Glyphosate and other Monsanto Herbicides. Done the proper scientific way! I would like your feedback. Since you're a doctor :)

I read your article, and started to respond. I have no idea where the reply got to. I take it you haven't seen it. I'll try again if I can. Got a spare tuit?

Trust me, I'm a doctor.

Hahahahaha, well, you won't really be curing cancer, but I can certainly see your point and share it. I spent many days with bandwidth problems and I would really like to know what was the cause of my misery. I have friends who still have this problem. I have luckily acquired some SP to overcome it.

Let's hope you get some answers here.

Yes, let's. I'm doing this not for me, but for your friends and others who are still having trouble.

Trust me, I'm a doctor.

Oh, I get how you feel. I had big problems with bandwidth and I got mad at times, really mad. I even made a post about it and explained it. I do not want to put it here so you do not get the wrong idea, but if you are interested I will give you the link. It answers some of your questions, not all of them, some :)
Hope you get your answers one way or the other. Good luck!

If you think it's pertinent then, by all means, put the link here.

Trust me, I'm a doctor.

Here you go Bandwidth explained
I wrote it some 20 days ago, keep that in mind before upvoting it people, but feel free to read and take something from it, I hope it helps.

Thanks @zen-art - most sensible explanation I have come across!

I am lucky as I have not been hit but the current Bandwidth issues and I hope I am not tempting fate by saying this but its so bad for th site as it is most often new comers who get hit by it and it can frustrate them and cause them to leave

Much the impression I got @catweasel - I suspect higher-ups have some serious problem acknowledging possibly radical contributions from newcomers..maybe more a matter of lack of humility than of arrogance..?

But on the other hand, @zen-art's sober explanation does make sense!

I used to get the problem a lot but not so much now.

I think bandwidth issues comes up when your voting power is extremely low. Perhaps due to excessive curation.
