These Dos & Don'ts won't make you a billionaire but will sure make you a better Steemian

in #steemit7 years ago

Do you want to become a better steemian capable of gaining more followers, attention and money?

In this article I will introduce you several things to do and do not do that I have assimilated during my journey on steemit by experimenting myself and observing the behaviour of more experienced users.

Are you ready? Let's get started!

Dos and Don'ts on Steemit: Many know, few apply.

After reading this article you will not automatically become rich (or maybe you will  😵) but surely you will realize you are making some mistakes that in some way or another are not allowing you to increase your reputation, the number of followers and the earnings of your posts in making which you put a lot of effort.

I invite you to write down these 6 fundamental dos and don'ts:

What you should be doing
1. Comment
2. Stay Active
3. Join SteemSpeak

What you shouldn't be doing
4. Plagiarism
5. Spamming
6. Crap Posting

#1 Comment, comment and comment!

Steemit unlike other social networks such as facebook and instagram, is a community.

Some people miss the meaning of this beautiful word so I would like to paste Wikipedia's definition:
"A community is a small or large social group that has something in common, such as norms, religion, values, or identity. Communities often share a sense of place that is located in a given geographical area (eg a country, village, town or neighborhood) or in virtual space trough communication platforms.

When you join steemit for the first time it is likely that you have found the platform yourself and do not know many people. If you are like me, you will not know anyone at first.
Which better way then commenting on other people's posts, to connect with them?
Take a look at some of the tags that interest you, find people whose writing style you like and add value to their article by writing an original comment that comes from your heart.
Fake Instagram-Style comments such as "cool" or "well done" will not bring anything back if not a negative perception that people will have of you being recognized as someone who's in it just for the money.   💸

Don't beg for followers or attention either. That's totally not worth doing on Steemit!

I really like how @stellabelle breaks this down on her article The Ultimate Guide to Killing it on Steemit or Anywhere Else. She said: "Pestering people, begging and whining for attention are bad strategies. Don’t do them. It will get you nowhere. Lifting others up is the best way to get followers"

#2 Stay Active

As with any social network, constancy is one of the key elements for success. Would you like if your favorite singer stopped writing songs or singing at concerts? Adele just announced she will not go on tour anymore and her fans are so bummed about it. "Yeah right Steven, you're talking about Adele while I'm a Steemit blogger."
Well, big mistake. If you are thinking like this you're not starting off correctly! When you start writing and someone starts to follow you, it means that your content is appreciated. No one pays users to follow you, they do it spontaneously. Do not keep them hanging!

Moreover, posting constantly will allow you to pile up some Steem Power in a healty frequency!  😉  😉

#3 Join SteemSpeak Voice Chat on Discord!

This morning I was reading @fyrstikken 's latest post and once I got to the end of it his signature said:"If you want to connect with me or other steemians, come to http://steemspeak.com - we got music!"

Let me tell you: I joined the chat just earlier today and I already love it. A lot of awesome people chitchatting, providing useful informations and talking about future projects (just like this one from @mughat about long term advertising rewards for steemians).

Furthermore they really have music and it's good one too! Justin Bieber and Rihanna the whole time!
I'm kidding, I'm kidding! Pink Floyd and Beatles seem to be the most popular choices.  👌

Join SteemSpeak you wont regret it!

These are tips on things you should do to get the most out of your time spent on Steemit yet all the effort you will put into doing these things will be vain if you continue to commit one or more of the following mistakes.

#4 Plagiarism

Plagiarism is not only a totally immoral thing, especially if you take an economic advantage, but it is also absolutely unacceptable on Steemit: you will be flagged and lose reputation points very quickly or even get banned.
So all the time you spent finding, copying and pasting other stuff on you "blog", and all the money you earn by doing this shit will be lost.

I personally rely a lot on the word respect. Before doing any action, especially if another person is involved, I try to put myself in the shoes of that person to figure out how I'd feel if what I'm doing was done to me.
Know put yourself in the shoes of the person you plagiarized/stole a content from. Blatantly whistling while spending time on the internet you find yourself on Steemit reading a post. After the first line you realize that that post is yours and that the bastard who used it selfishly also earned $ 50.
Well, you would feel bad. No doubt!

#5 Spamming

Spamming your link on other people's comment section is not an intelligent way to attract the attention of whales and people with influential voting power.
You will be recognized as the lazy one who wants to get results as soon as possible and without commitment. You know that in the long term you will not get anywhere by doing so. Also Steemit is still in beta. There is still room for improvements and be assured that people who do not bring value to the community will be the first to be selected out naturally. As stated above, be genuine, be consistent, be patience you will be rewarded!

Also, even in this case you might be warned by running the risk of seeing your score drop and become insignificant.
And trust me, people will flag you. They will assure you are copying and pasting the same message all over the place and flag you without any kind of warning. Imagine infuential people such as @sweetsssj, @jerrybanfield or @papa-pepper who's posts are very popular and get hundreds of comments. A lot of people like to read comments including the autors, so you won't get away with spamming for sure. Nobody likes it!

#6 Crap-Posting

Do not write just for the taste to see your earnings increase. Write about stuff you are really passionate about. Write about the topic that fascinates you the most and you would like to read articles about yourself.
If you don't like the subject in the first place, how do you pretend others to enjoyed it?
If you have nothing in mind it is preferable that you skip one day rather than write anything just to keep pace.
Go out for a walk, take a break. You'll find inspiration eventually!

If you follow these advices you will definitely become successfull on Steemit!

That's it for today my friends so, as always:
Till next time, love ya all.

Interesting note about Adele. There's something humanizing about seeing a "rock star" with stage fright.

..thank you for your post..just have to read it several times cause for the quantity of information..followed, upvoted, resteemed..

Thanks a lot for supporting me. I really appreciate your kindness! :)

Nice! I like the advice of only writing if you're inspired. Go outside and take a walk. Love that! For me nature is such a great place to go and I always come back home with new ideas and a breath of fresh air. Thank for writing this!

Glad you relate to that. Thanks for your king words my friend!

@budgetmarketing thank you for the outstanding guide here and the shout out!

Thank you very much for reaching out to me Jerry. It was my pleasure. Have a great rest of your day!

Upvoted and resteemed. Good article :-)

As always, you're the best! Thanks for your support my friend!

A crap-post from time to time can be quite relieving ;)

Can't really turn you down here. Once in a while, in between posts you've put much effort in writing, a crappy post could be relieving. True! 😄

Yeah, good advices, but crap posting depends on everyone. even trump is doing only shit tweets...and no one is closing he's account

Good point. Thanks for your honest opinion :)

Nicely put together guide @budgetmarketing ! I am sure it will help some of the struggling minnows and authors :)

Thank you for putting this together. I also made a pretty damn nice guide myself yesterday, I won't link it here, but you know where to find it!

You have my full support !

There you go, this why of self promoting content is totally acceptable. Will take a look at your article as well. Glad you appreciated mine!

Good post. One of many, but looking at all the crap comments I get (Upvoted, plz upvote mine [link]), both on my posts as in private chat messages, it's still very necessary. I do think though that everyone who already knows this will read these posts and congratulate each other on a job well done, educating the community, while the people who need this education probably don't read it. Ah well! I'm getting tired of trying to educate, one at a time... It doesn't do much anyway.

On my latest post, I got a similar comment (upvoted, plz upvote mine), where I asked to please not ask for upvotes/follow like that. A few moments later, I lost an upvote. Nothing I care about, but it just shows they don't want to learn.

I'm actually very curious to see if someone will leave one of those comments on this post. That would be funny! Thanks for sharing your opinion, very appreciated!

Hah, that would be funny indeed :D

Well written post with solid advice @budgetmarketing. I've resteemed. It is uncanny that people still try the "I'm following you please follow me tactic."

I have to say that I've joined a few channels on Discord but not Steamspeak yet. I find it all a bit overwhelming though because you already have Steemit on the one side and then Discord pinging all over the place. I'm going to have to give it another go though.

Thanks buddy, you're awesome! Yeah you should definitely give it another try. I'll se you there! You'll find me as "stevelou"
