Steemit Needs Series: Please comment with your ideas to improve Steemit!! | E. 19 | Sept. 15th, 2017 | Community Engagement | Archives to help Developers / Community.

in #steemit7 years ago (edited)

Hi again everyone! I am keeping my word to keep the series going!

I would like you to comment with your visual aids or written ideas of what you think Steemit can use to improve the Community for features and why.

Comments sections here are GOLD as we know, some great TIL learning and tips usually pop up too here.

Part of the reason I do this series and share other things / series I do, is for the TON of new people coming to Crypto and Steemit daily, I mention this daily in a post or comment somewhere.

They need help and resources. They feel lost when they are Steemit / Crypto noobs. I know I did.

Comments sections are great learning places for all of us -- but new Crypto folks especially.

It's now several weeks or so after the latest big changes, the latest Hard Fork (HF) / the Steem Powering downs latest rounds, many of those cashouts done and seeing some stabilizations, some bugs fixed etc.

The rewards pool is seeing a lot of changes again.......

Views, Spam, Engagement & Meaningful Comments:

Views and engagement still seem to be down and that is why I try to do so many posts / series to BOOST engagement.

The last while I have been wondering if it simply because we have so many accounts here now.

I was the first person to blog that I am aware of - of us crossing the $300k account mark recently here. The other part of me is thinking -- how many of those are just bots because that is a rising problem?

And if there ARE that many accounts.... one might think the comments section would be growing exponentially with all our posts too, right?

Spam and spammy comments are one of the biggest topics now every single day in the community here and many of us are struggling with it, and how to deal with it.

It's OK to gather new ideas but if the same issues pop up, that is great too, because it will send the message that something is more important to the developers and Steemit Elders. My goal is again - use this blog post as a resource to help the dev's and the community members. I can combine them into one post later on if needed to help developers or members.

It is easily searchable also -- as I use the same key phrases / words etc. in the title to keep it searchable - more easily.

I was trying to pick good tags...... I decided to use the TIL or HOWTO tags -- hoping someone either looking FOR help on learning something -- or someone looking TO help on these things would comment! I thought about that one for a couple mins.

If you want to tag people or share it so others can comment and contribute also, that is great. I have my own ideas and see a lot of people talking about it, but as someone who is NOT - I REPEAT NOT! tech savvy like many of you, and who is relatively newer to the Blockchain and Crypto stuff, I know my role is limited to give ideas, I am just a Fat Minnow LOL.

But I have been an activist for years, I am used to building community and gathering info and trying to help so I guess you can blame the activist side of me for this idea which I think is a good one -- an INTENTIONAL POST on the idea, to gather stuff in one place and be easily searchable and findable for all the IT types and developers etc.

Just my way of trying to contribute. I did not even know for sure what tags to use in this post, and I actually spent 5 mins looking and researching the best ones in the past to try and use, before I posted this LOL. I will edit the tags ASAP if you give me better ones to use!!

Noobs can find the TIL or HowTo tags and nuggets here helpful, as I mentioned earlier here.

If we can get some good feedback going, we can use these ideas, all in one place and people can refer back to them. That's why E.1 / E.2 /E.3...4/5/6/7/8/9, etc etc - was in the title, I am hopeful it is helpful as a resource.

We must always head towards the path of Liberty. And help others on this path.

Please note -- I will have limited internet access for awhile -- so PLEASE do not be upset that I cannot reply right away, or to everyone. I am dealing with some changes, and will have limited time online and will be happy if I get a few blog posts up a week. -
Sort:
  1. There should be an option where one could see who resteemed his/her post.
  2. Notification thing should be improved. Currently, we only get notifications when something happens in our wallet
  3. There should be an option where you could see who gave you a mention, I don't think we can track all the mentions on the website. @minnowbooster did introduce a tool where we can track it but we want it to be default.
  4. Steem power should be on the header of the steemit page, yes, I know there are several tools out there but again, we want it to be on the main website.
  5. A filter where you can see all the posts by reputation, like I should be able to see all the posts written by the people whose reputation score is between 30-35.

Good ideas.

The rep score ideas and issues are kicked around a lot, for various reasons pro and against......

I would like to see an indicator on each post to see who resteemed it. I know I can find that information elsewhere, but having the ability to quickly check each post would help. I try to visit the people who help me so I can get them back.

I would also like more sharing buttons. For me that means Pinterest, stumbleupon, digg and g+. I'm sure there are many others who share to other places too.

I'm mystified by the passwords and keys and all of that. I've read tutorials and I still don't get it. I think this is more a general issue with crypto than just with steemit, but I wish it was more simple to understand for people like me who are not too tech-y.

Finally, the steps to moving money here are strange and mysterious as well. I'm about to try to release a small amount of sbd and see if I can turn it into fiat and spend it. I've looked at this a couple of times and the tutorials make me need a nap.

  • Go to another place
  • open an account
  • send your money somewhere by some means
  • somehow it gets to the new place
  • now figure out how to get the money from the new place into your bank or somewhere else so you can spend it
  • obtain more passwords in this procedure and don't lose them!

Ergh...

I would be so happy if I could have a debit card from steemit and spend directly. I guess steemgigs is one way of doing that trick! But I would like to be able to actually spend it. This is on my list :)

Had to UV your comments, LOL, they are very good and I like the part about the nap, frankly

LOL

Naps solve all problems in life!

I love naps, I just rarely take them!!!!

One thing that I would like to see added is a WYSIWYG editor, and an ability to create polls (this would be excellent for community voting on issues, as well as fun stuff).

I would like to be able to 'star' certain posts, or otherwise save them to a dashboard or bookmark them for later reference. Right now I have to really do a lot of digging to find a post that's several days old, even though the discussion may be ongoing in it.

I would like the ability to somehow replenish my Voting Power quicker. I upvote my followers, but I am constantly drained. I am at the point sometimes where I would gladly spend a few SBD to replenish my Voting Power so I don't have to upvote my followers with my measly 20%.

I would also prefer somehow really great quality content could remain at the top for longer than a few days.

I understand communities are coming soon and I am most excited about them. Better ways to navigate and filter through the chaos of posts is much appreciated!

There is some good input there.

I have never seen your idea of SBD being used to replenish quicker, that is a GOOD one, we could burn the SBD like with other promotions and it would generate more deflationary aspects for the currency or be used another way.

That is a good one for sure.

Thanks!!

Thanks!
Yes I'm not sure how it would work out, somebody smart has to figure out a formula so whales can't replenish their entire VP with a few dollars, but minnows can. It needs to be proportionate somehow. But for people like me, who like to upvote followers in order to build community, it's worth it

Sliding scale / weight based system is easy to code up for that.

You are newer here and to me, but Steemit Inc. dev's are actually using this series, I was told -- to keep a watch on what the community wants, that is partly why I started running it basically almost weekly now for awhile.

Take heart!

lol

And I, in fact, have been looking for a place where I can voice my suggestions! So this works!

UV that comment too!!!!

I would really like to be able to easily and anonymously create a new account. I have the desire to post things that I don't necessarily want tied to my corporial person. I know there are ways, but I wonder if there could be an easier way. Not tied to the blockchain.

Currently there is a dropdown on a posting showing who has upvoted.

Some people are rewarding users who upvote posts by a tedious process of manually rewarding the people individually. A simple page showing who has upvoted (perhaps as a hyperlink beside the # of votes) with the option to transfer funds directly to individuals on that page. I think it would encourage more people to reward the community members.

There are many times where the number of views is not proportional to the upvotes. This is because people just randomly upvote things for curation rewards. I think ontop of what you said, you should also put an eye next to the user name to show that they have actually viewed your content.

A modification to steem might be to reward reading a maximum of 10 times per day (not just upvotes) ... to encourage readership ... While it might decrease the value of steem it opens the potential of the coin.

Good ideas today, thanks for the input

An addition to the coding of the code would be to add an additional field which would identify the source (possibly allocating the 5th category). Steem lends itself to be used by online newspapers if it had an additional feature which allowed them to constraint their display to information posted specifically on their site. Not only could they reward their readership ... it might be a way for them to reduce the cost of their writers. I mentioned in an earlier reply about adding a readership bonus.

A modification to steem might be to reward reading a maximum of 10 times per day (not just upvotes) ... to encourage readership ... While it might decrease the value of steem it opens the potential of the coin.

If the coin had a way that online media companies could brand their own content but still attract the entire steem network readership, I could foresee that they would advertise in regular media to come to their branded site.

I'd like to see the ability to have organized resteems on your home page, or a private tab where you can organize your favorite content. Eventually your favorite resteems will get burried with more resteem and your own content.

I'd also like to see the comments have a minimum size so that people stop posting random things that have no real value to the post.

"Great Job Resteemed and Upvoted!" is annoying to read. I wont upvote a comment like that, and it does no good for the community, so why have it? Instead you can replace it with perhaps a heart or a emojicon if someone really wanted to give a reaction to it other an an upvote.

The resteem issues are a constant, believe me

LOL

LOL, come to think of it, its so obvious that everyone would of thought the same. Now i feel like youre thinking "theres always ONE GUY!!!" HA!

Disclaimer: I am just a bot trying to be helpful.

so many things...

the spam/bot issue needs attention. when whales are having to use theur voting power to flag bots, it keeps them from being able to reward great content from minnows.

the reward system needs work. i have no good answers for this, but every day i am reading about whales abusing the system to reward themselves more instead of spreading the wealth. That would be fine if the whales were the only ones producing good content. but im pretty sure we know that isnt the case.

being able to direct message other users without going through the wallet would be helpful.

any tool that reduces the learning curve to make it more manageable for people to get here and leatn the system.

i guess ill stop thwre for now. im sure i could come up with plenty more though. haha

Great points, all round Mike.... thanks man

The account recovery process is one scary thing for new users if we can work around it

Great input, thanks for taking time commenting, the new user issues are for sure understandable, I know what you mean
