Or Yet another guide
MAY I EXPLAIN MYSELF
You might think why the hell would I listen to recommendations from newbie himself, why would he think his attempt to create a guide would benefit anyone? May I explain, this stated just set of links for me to up vote when I would get an account, then it went on as you would see in next paragraph a Pages doc with some of what structure for my friends any myself, and most of all I think since I’m new here, my learning is still fresh.
Dear newbies,
I m new here, been here for 10 days, just like you are and as I am surfing through this universe a came across many interesting terms, profiles, post and applications. This is my attempt to structure it for you and for my brain too. And most importantly put all the info I found useful in one place, so when my friends will join the party, and I believe they will (it just might take some time), it would be much easier for me to explain whats happening here.
Everything mentioned here is my personal understanding and I might be wrong in some cases or statements and I really hope you and more experienced users will participate and give feedback, especially if I’m wrong! Really appreciate it.
Also you can add some links you found informative and I have missed out.
RESEARCH
Look around you, search for answers, dig deeper, ask and participate, give back and repeat.
INTRO BASICS
Before reading this, if you haven't done already, firstly may I suggest going thru Quick Start Guide (here you get absolute basics and first point of reference for your future research, whether how to edit a post or how moneys work) and secondly reading White Paper (there you will get some info about tech, ecosystem, crypto etc) at first I actually didn't understand lots of stuff from there, but now the picture is getting much clearer. I printed it out and since then been asking people around to point me in right direction or search for relevant posts if I am kind of stuck.
Also you should use chat to directly ask using @username or join channels like #help and get answers there.
What I really like here, in my personal view is that there is abundance of information and if you want to dive deep into processes behind the community, here I mean everything (technical, financial, social etc) if you search you will defiantly be able to write great content and give back to the community or bring up a server and become a witness. Well thats what it looks like from plankton point of view, thats whom I am.
THE PLANKTON
Btw did you know that new users here are called plankton and top holders are whales (there are many creatures in between dolphins minnows etc). This is, as far as I understood terminology used to show who owns what amount of the VESTS in the community. VESTS on the other hand
Here are some links:
- Why everyone is important article by @calaber24p
- VESTS distribution and value by @calaber24p
- What does Steem power mean article by @crypt0
- Steem power distribution article by @liberosist not sure about todays figures and trends, but might check some more info on it.
- There are also some others proposals how to group users by amount of vests they have like galaxy analogy by @liberosist
POSTING SKILLS
How edit and structure your post
markup basics by @thecryptofiend but if you actually went through Steemit quick start guide list you would find link there, and much more.
Writer I already respect is @kyriacos

WITNESSES
These are the people who produce blocks to run the blockchain Steem, on which apps like steemit work. Unlike in miner cryptos/blockchains whether proof of stake or work, here you get ordinary users get to vote for the witnesses, so I recommend you get to know everyone in top 100 (don’t get scared you can take your time, I’ve only read 3-4 of their blogs and couple guys who work on some projects.
Here is why it is important to vote, how it works and more explained by fellow steemers:
- Basic intro by @pfunk link1
- What are witnesses by @teamsteem
MONEYS
Feel like before talking about SP, SBD and Steem i need to dive deeper to understand what is happening there, since I’ve been discovering some interesting things, like if you sell your curation or author SBD in market for steem and then power up to SP it would get you more SP if you just clicked power up (todays value of the currency might be the cause? 2$+) or that there is 100% yearly inflation which helps redistribute capital from whales to new users and more.
Or actually why invent a bicycle, if there is an explicit explanation of economic system i’ve already found by @sigmajin
SECURITY
There are certain posts I found useful here, for example how when you first register you actually get set of keys all meant for different uses (memo, master, active, posting), yet I am real noob here, so I'm just going leave them here, in your hands to take research to the next level.
- how to secure ur acc by @pfunk
- more about different keys also by @pfunk, actually you should check this Steemer’s page out, there are lots of steemit-guides, which you can also look up in topics like help and steem-help
- This one is actually epic, these guys hacked accounts and showed weak spot not even in code but rather in how do you call it “human error” defiantly a good read by @noisy & @lukmarcus
BITSHARES AND EOS.IO (Luke Im your father and thats your son)
Or should I say they all are Dan’s children, the man who invented STEEM, here I want to speak shortly about what I found out. Well as I said the chat going around is that for most of the developments in DPOS and crazy speed transactions, consensus and other stuff I’m trying to familiarise myself with, is Dan’s responsibility @ and teams that he brings together to build great things. Btw BTS (Bitshares token is doing really well recently both and volume on 10.06.17 3rd most traded token), has also 8th biggest capitalisation and record transactions per day across all the currencies, Steem is second highest, if I'm correct. So you should definitely look into all the ecosystems, you can sign up for news about EOS, last two i received were the white paper release and provisional info about ICO (uncapped for over a year), which is very interesting and caused some what discussion in the community, especially in telegram chats EOS
DEV AND PROJECTS
You may also check out some projects running on Steem here as well as checking out developers behind them, list isn’t full, yet i found it somewhat intesting to find esteem (mobile platform) and streemian (automation) and many more, for example forum chainBB @jesta who's as i understood is looking for feedback about the platform to make it better.
more project can be found at steemtools by @roelandp
TIP GUIDES
- @timcliff recently wrote an article where he is building up the ultimate steemit tips guide, but not just by himself but rather with everyone else, you should definitely check it out, especially the comments below, there are lots of people participating and you might find something useful for yourself too help post to create the ultimate guide
- check out this article by @teamsteem
CONCLUSION
Enjoy Steem follow creators and people with own voice, try to be yourself, participate in what you find interesting, expand your knowledge, these are just small part of milestones I have prioritised for myself, while aiming to not only take but give, because once someone helps you up and it is financially or socially represented in some value, I find it more likely that I would do the same, when opportunity arises.
If you and I here for long, we better get to understand what are the mechanisms and drivers here, promote right wisdom, ethics and morals. (although statistically i believe in normal distribution with outliers and majority, so careful step by step growth would be beneficial for everyone who's real.
Here are some recent post I found, that had either influence on my writing here or caused much agreement with their message:
- (https://steemit.com/steemit/@timcliff/you-should-join-steemit-here-is-why) @timcliff
- much more structural and better work (https://steemit.com/steem/@teamsteem/the-ultimate-steem-guide) @teamsteem
Peace, have a nice weekend and may free markets be with you along with self planning
P.S. this is most likely my first and last attempt to write something like this, better leave it off for the pros like @teamsteem or @steemitguide and others I am yet to discover.
At last I want to thank to all Steemians who created such a strong fundament, by writing articles to help others, voting legit content up, hard working, setting an example, motivation and answering and guiding us newbies in here.
Photo taken by me when I traveled to Hong Kong, plus i used free service canva to edit it.
Sums up my thoughts. Hooked up on this platform.
I know about the term whales but I didn't we are planktons....lol....and that there are dolphins and minnows as well! I bet if I tell my wife she will ask if there are mermaids too....haha
Thanks for this guide!
I welcome you to the colorful world of steemit! You will definitely get a whole new experience from all the wonderful people in this community.
