Filmmakers Need their Own Hashtag and Community - Introducing #STEEMFILMsteemCreated with Sketch.

What Steem needs is a specific hashtag and community for filmmakers who are active on the Steem platforms.

Why? The filmmaking community here on Steem is still in its infancy. There are a few filmmakers and vloggers here but there isn't any hashtag or group that is specific for filmmakers here on the Steem platforms to help us categorize, isolate, encourage and rally for.

There are communities that help foster new content and active creators such as @curie, @sandbox, @minnowsupport and @steemstem but they're either too generic and / or not geared towards filmmakers. There are a few film / media centric accounts like @film-trail and @namiks, but they aren't for filmmakers. They're for film lovers, and that's great!

But I would like to see a community of filmmakers evolve here on Steem in a similar way to YouTube. On YouTube, we're YouTubers and it has become a massive institution for new and experienced filmmakers alike with their YouTube Studios, collaoration hubs and free equipment. It's one of the best parts about the YouTube filmmaker experience. YouTube WANTS you to make films and helps you do that. You definitely feel like there's a community there, despite the platform's censorship and monetization problems.

We need to find a way of doing that in a decentralized manner and I think #steemfilm can help galvanize and promote the filmmaking community.

CURRENT HASHTAGS

There are five primary hashtags that people are using to promote their work, #film, #filmmaking, #filmmaker, #movies and #video.

  • Film - It could work but it's too generic and the posts are usually about mainstream cinema. That is to say, cinema that isn't tied to the Steem platforms in any way.

  • Movies - This hashtag has the same problem as film and is simultaneously flooded by movie reviews.

  • Filmmaking and filmmaker are excellent hashtags, but they don't capture the idea of a community that is specific to Steemit.

  • Video - That's just a crappy tag. It describes nothing except a moving image. It doesn't tell us anything about the product or the person producing said product.

USING #STEEMFILM LETS US KNOW:

  1. The related post is specific enough to be about filmmaking AND ALSO from someone who is MAKING those films on Steem platforms. At the very least, it can let us know that the filmmaker is an active participant in the community even if they keep their videos on YouTube or Vimeo.

  2. The poster considers themselves part of the filmmaking community and wants to help it grow

USING #STEEMFILM CAN HELP US:

  1. Create a more visible tag with its specificity by supplanting the five aforementioned ones with a single hashtag. We know that it is about making films on Steem, so we don't need to use up our five allotted hashtags describing that the post is about filmmaking. You can still use them but if we get enough people using that hashtags we can use other ones to be more specific.

  2. Rally together and help build an actual community of filmmakers instead of flapping in the wind or adhocking it with the other communities.

  3. Share each others work and make it more visible by helping the rest of the Steem community find us.

  4. Help us find worthy projects of supporting. When we stop using the other hashtags, it makes room for our custom ones. So we can now do things like having specific hashtags for specific films. I'm using #changelingfilm for my short film, and now I have room for three other hashtags that might help those who need to find the project because they'll be interest specific instead of generically about film or filmmaking.

WHAT TO DO NEXT?

  1. Copy and use the artwork in your posts to promote the community. I've used public domain images and modified it myself, so feel free to snag it!

  2. Get in touch with me in the comments to let me know your thoughts and if there is any way to take this to the next level.

Thanks for having a read. Let's make this work. Let's grow an actual community of filmmakers and video artists for the film and art lovers out there.

WHO DIS IS

If you want to know who I am and what Distant Signal is, check this out. It's sort of a manifesto. The TL;DR is that I've won an award for producing, make a lot of reality TV, live in LA and think that the way artist and media incentives are ill-aligned and serve large corporations and not independent artists.

I just wrote about this a couple days ago! My friend and I were talking about it and also think it would be good to make an account supported by some whales and such that seeks out good production content and upvotes it or resteems it! This will be helpful too when this hashtag catches on and there is a lot of content to sift through!

I love SteemFilm! It's perfect. We were also racking our brains about an appropriate hashtag and I think you're right, it's specific enough for the community, but not too specific and not too vague.

I think we have an uphill climb in getting producers to migrate to d.tube because it is so new and only capable of 480p but I think it's also very important. We can't exactly hope to grow the Steem community of filmmakers if everyone is still using YouTube to upload their videos and then merely sharing on Steemit. It may be rough at first, but the more people who upload to d.tube, the more traction it gains, the more money it makes and the more opportunities the devs have to develop it and make it way better.

The last thing is, I think we should be encouraging filmmakers to put the Steem logo into their actual videos, as an opening or end credit. It will draw attention to the brand and potentially create some buzz around Steemit. I am totally stealing this SteemFilm logo and will use it on my future videos! Fantastic! Thanks for your hard work and solid faith in Steemit, it warms my cold, dead heart! :)

I think creating a deligated account or a steem bot for filmmakers would be very cool. There’s a chance for abuse, but if the bot is formulated right it could be a very powerful tool to create buzz.

I think that the resolution is barely a barrier. As Steemit progresses, infrastructural improvements will come. And as for the Steem logo in the videos, that's a great idea. I think I could work on a template for this. Something to be put in the beginning, like a corporate logo.

This movie was funded by Steemit. in capital letters.

Steem productions are no longer a dream. They're real.

Great initiative! I have been thinking something alike months ago, when I was still working on my microbudget feature. Due to the cancellation of this project and my focus on writing on movies and games, these thoughts pretty much disappeared.

Thanks to @juliakponsford and @vachemorte 's JUJU Gum project, I am slowly starting to feel the filmmaking itch again. You made my itch even stronger.

I am definitely seeing the potential of filmmaking collabs on Steemit and won't rule out that I take part in this in the near future. I'm always interesting in helping out one way or another.

Once again, great initiative! Keep up the good work and let's stay in touch :)

Good to hear your feeling the itch again. I’m feeling the same way. Collabs on steemit could be very powerful. So could a deligated account that focuses specifically on filmmakers like @bethwheatcraft is suggesting.

Speaking of projects, check out my Changelings project if you get the chance. I’m trying to produce the first throlller / horror film made on Steem and hopefully with Steem. You can also find it with the hashtag, #changelingfilm. It’ll be the first #steemfilm project!

Yo I am a film director and I will be releasing THE JUJU GUM CONSPIRACY next monday on Steemit as a world premiere. I am here because Vince The man summon me up. I chatted with co-creator @juliakponsford what tags to use during the release period this morning so it's a concern of mine also as we have the same exact thoughts as those described in your post. Let's stay in touch.

I'm writing an original minisseries and I believe that DTube is a groundbreaking platform for this kind of indie entrepreneurship!

I'll watch this up close. We're making history, folks!

Excellent! I'll start using this tag when it's relevant.

Great! I hope it helps in the long run.

Me, too. I just pitched the steemit community to the filmmaking collective I'm a part of, too. Hope to get enough of them on here that we can really build a platform that can fund and make all our stuff!

Yes! I’ve been trying to get some of my filmmaker friends on board too. It’s a complicated sell.

It's a complicated business.

Sounds good. :) I'll start using the tag in my filmmaking-related posts for sure. @vincentnijman you might be interested in this.

Thanks for resteeming the concept. I hope that we can help focus filmmakers into a force here. We’re a little too scartered to the winds as it were. Followed!

Thanks! I followed both of you.

Awesome, thank you!

Thanks for the shoutout! I would otherwise have missed it. Just glad my Steemify phone app picked it up ;)

I like the idea of this tag.
I've only been on Steemit for 1 week and have written mostly about my music video work - of which which I actively shoot, edit, direct, produce etc on a full time basis.
I've been using hashtags that don't really capture what it is I do, and I can't find many videographers/filmmakers on here for that reason - no one seems to live in one place.

So I'm fully behind using this. Nice work. #STEEMFILM
Oh, and nice to meet you too.

Thanks! I've followed you and I'll keep an eye out for your work. I'm wrapping up a music video edit as well and will be posting that soon. I'll check out your stuff. Welcome to Steemit!

Thanks for following. I look forward to seeing your new work! I've also got a second post coming talking briefly about my background, with some more video examples.

Looking forward to it!

Wow! I was happy to find such a tag and community!

Let's make this big, so filmmaker's can have an extra support.

Thanks for your support and the resteem!

i like the idea, as the #movie and #movies are filled with unrelated stuff more and more recently.

Thanks! I agree. It’s hard to differentiate between creator and fan content.
