A contest for Steem Basic Income - THRONE WAR!

Hello everyone!

It's been a while. I'm still lurking around, while lazily poking at Steem with my chopsticks.

After participating in a few SBI contests, I had been considering running my own. Today I've stumbled upon @tfcoates 's post and, well! His announcement gave me that little push I apparently needed.

Steem Basic Income

You probably already know every detail about this project. For 1 Steem, you purchase a share for yourself and another share for a different person; both accounts will receive a small lifetime weekly upvote.

The Game

The Amber Diceless Role-playing Game was first published in 1991 by Erick Wujcik's Phage Press. Yikes! Feels like it happened in a different century. Since then I have played in several Amber games, usually experimenting with various tweaks to the rules or the setting.

An infamous staple of the ADRPG is the Throne War campaign mode; in a Throne War, the characters are nobles competing with each other (and with everyone else in the universe) to become the single ruler in Amber, the one true kingdom in all existence. Backs are stabbed, drinks are poisoned, alliances are broken until the victor stands alone.

The setting of the game is based on the Chronicles of Amber, two series of five books each, by amazing author Roger Zelazny. The first book is titled Nine Princes in Amber; it features an amnesiac immortal alien (one of the titular princes) rediscovering his heritage, and his role in a centuries-long struggle for supremacy.

In all, there are nine Princes and four Princesses. Each of them has his or her own goals, personality, quirks, and areas of competence. Some are stronger than others, some are more cunning, others just want to be left alone.

All of the above are your hints. Even if you never played the game, or never read the books, you will find quite easily the names of the characters, and possibly, determine how good are their chances.

The Contest

I'm giving out three shares of Steem Basic Income.

Here are the rules:

Comment to this post, announcing your choice of Prince or Princess, and how your champion is going to defeat the rivals and conquer the throne of Amber.

Just to be clear: I'm not asking you to invent a new character. You have to cast your lot with one of the protagonists in the books.

Please be brief! I'm not asking for a novel, just explain what kind of strategy you have in mind.

And that's all you have to do. I'll consider upvotes and resteems as clumsy attempts to bribe me, which is actually a very effective way of playing Amber, but not really a necessity.

I'll give one share of SBI to the strongest and most believable claim to the throne; one that takes into account the champion's methods and character.

The second share of SBI goes to the comment that I will like the most. Possibly because I'll find the comment clever, or funny, or endearing... Who knows!

The final share of SBI will be randomly assigned to a third comment. Luck, in Amber, is a powerful skill. Trust in your destiny!

Time is, as usual, until this post pays out.

Good luck, and may your struggles be glorious.

Sort:

I do know Amber RPG as the first exemple of diceless role-playing game, but I never played it, nor I read the books.
By a fast web research, I think they're full of Celtic and British fairytale elements. When I have some time I will try to read them.

Based on the summaries found, I have a sympathy for Gérard, dull but good-hearted, beloved even by his enemies. If he manages to find a trusted and clever advisor, he can unite the fighting factions under his benevolent and reassuring dominion. Sometimes, you don't need to be the best choice for a part, but the not-so-bad choice for the majority.

"The big bastard would have strode forward with that monster blade of his and cut the thing in half. Then it probably would have fallen on him and writhed all over him, and he'd have come away with a few bruises."

The blue-and-grey fleet sets sail! As you say, Gerard is universally liked and underestimated, both with good reason. He is a hero, generous and true. His strength is a thing out of legend: he could beat the crap out of anyone in a fair fight, which is why nobody ever gives him one.

Will the others see the wisdom in crowning a king they can easily manipulate?

One contest to you, one contest to me! I'd opt for Prince Corwin. A classical but solid choice I'd say since he's the eldest heir with a legitimate claim. He has a well-balanced personality and skills, and I'd plan to prevail by gaining the support of the army and, mostly, of the people. Furthermore, I have to say that he reminds me a bit about Stannis Baratheon (poor dude) and hence he has my simpathy!

"He may still be only a smart-mouthed meddler, skilled mainly in the minor art of survival, blind as ever the dungeons knew him to the finer shades of irony."

Of course. The relentless dark prince enters the field! Corwin is a force to be reckoned with. He has weaknesses -- compassion, wanderlust, beautiful damsels in distress -- yet all but the last one, end up helping him when he needs it. Going at it alone, aiming for military and popular support also suits him well.

A solid claim. We'll see if it bears fruit!

You officially made me curious of the Chronicles of Amber, @gwilberiol.

I'm glad! The first five books are excellent, I recommend them.

I pick the eldest heir to the thrown Prince Corwin. That alone puts him ahead of the others. An army will be built around the claim and riches promised to my most loyal followers. Examples will be made out of those who oppose me.

"I would never rest until I held vengeance and the throne within my hand, and good night sweet prince to anybody who stood between me and these things."

Another throws his lot with the black and silver banner! Will Corwin's promises inspire loyalty? Will his opponents believe his threats?

Only one way to find out. Good luck!
