On SMT’s and Urbex, who’s going to Create one?

in #steem5 years ago

Is it too early to start talking about something that has publically been stated, ‘is now in testing?’

I for one am quite excited about this and communities, but I see little being written about it.

Maybe it’s the false promises we have been sent over the last 2 years and the non-delivery of something that has long been awaited.

Will it deliver what we are expecting?

To put it another way, how is this going to be different from https://steem-engine.com/. These are questions I’m dying to ask the guys from Steemit INC, in 2 weeks.

They are all going to Steemfest 4 to talk about what else other than SMT’s and Communities surely?

One of the points mentioned in the Steemit INC blog posts was that initially, the front end is going to look like Steemit.com. I find this disappointing, but is this just a shell front-end that is going to be provided that can be configured?

Some of you know that a passion of mine is Urban Exploration, and despite me trying to get some other’s interested I see precious little content on the blockchain other than my own.

It’s not like there’s a shortage of material on the many Facebook groups, and premier Urbex sites such as https://www.28dayslater.co.uk/ and https://www.derelictplaces.co.uk/, but if I created a SMT then how do I incite these people to at least cross-post something so niche on my newly created page?

To the outside world, the promise of a token won’t mean shit to many people. They just see it as some worthless kind of vapourware. If there is a monitory value to it, you always get the question, ‘how much?’.

The direct answer is, ‘more than the nothing you are currently receiving’, but this is not enough to sway people from the comfortable familiarity of rinse and repeat on Facebook or wherever else they post.

When they hear its crypto, it puts the shitters up them even more.

What…., that scam BitCoin’, is the predictable response.

’what will it take to make people notice that they can get more than zero for their photographs and writing’

From what I can gather, the Steemian who creates the SMT rules the roost, generates the rules and releases the airdrops.

There are so many questions that I need to ask, and with the new ‘feature’ now being tested, surely somebody has some answers for me.

  • Can I create an SMT named ‘Urbex’?
  • Can the token be named, ‘Urbex’?
  • What will become of all the tribes? Will they merge, become obsolete, compete with and if so will there be a war for dominance?
  • From what I gather... to create one, it's just a few STEEM, but how about the maintenance?

RedLine.png

Apologies if these questions have already been answered elsewhere, but we can't be current with all STEEM affairs.

The following Steemians I have noticed in the past have either created Urbex content, have posted photographs or have expressed an interest in this unusual, dangerous, photograph exploration based hobby:

@mrurbex, @goblinknackers, @derangedvisions, @tarazkp, @celestal, @pennisf, @terrywayne, @pixelgranaten, @ellenripley, @valerianis, @revisesociology, @j85063, @photovisions, @fenngen and @theceltictraders.

You can see that I have my work cut for me, but still I am going to try. Many of the above have simply touched on the subject, but I have been noticing and planning for what will come in the future.

I’m not expecting everyone to write 700 word essays about when they pass a particularly looking creepy house. I probably would, but I understand not everyone is me. It’s about photography as well as the ‘getting in’ part.

camelot.jpg

Creepy looking places always catch the eye, I don’t think anyone can deny that. Can you take photographs of a creepy looking place, even if they are just exterior ones?

I hope I can get some more interest in this fascinating subject, even if you live in a country that’s far too dangerous to explore, such as America.

Do you have any plans for your own SMT? Are any of them stranger than mine? We will see!

All images unless cited, are my own.

I love going round old places, I hadn't really thought about it before because they're not "piles". I was with a friend in Royston and noticed a wood-panelled building behind the bank. We went and had a good nosy trying to work out how everything worked. It was before I knew about urbex and I'm not sure I had a camera with me, but it was definitely fascinating. I think it sold later for some vast amount of money, I expect it will be very valuable once they put in a bathroom and a front door.

I treat these places with a lot of respect.., tomorrow they may be gone forever and who will remember what the looked like or what they were.

Some may not care but the history part of them fascinates me.

Take the snaps while you can I say.., before you no longer can.

If you can get some Americans involved you'd at least have an audience...

Horrors of the backwoods would peak some interest for sure!

There's some fantastic content about.. just not on our blockchain. If only we could get them on..., the American's are scared to do it.., too many guns and maniac's out there!

I am pretty curious to see what happens as well. Steem-Engine has been so well done and there are so many new tribes that it is going to be interesting to see how the two integrate with each other. I think that is probably part of the reason the excitement isn't there as well. Just in general, not specifically for UrbEx.

Steem-Engine has done very well but seems unfinished to me.

You can't check your order history very easily.. concerning what prices you bid on, what orders you currently hold and the tracking of token price history is absent.

Which one will prevail, or will both? So many questions...

Gonna a be a tough one to sort out. As @steevc says, user experience is important and we can all see how Steemit seems a little unfinished on that side. I think it would be hard to here a specific group of people here, they will just come in proportionally as the platform grows. So I think the conclusion is that you're going to have to be patient while things sloooowly pick up :D

Is that UI going to be configurable and by users, and not developers?

I have some coding skills.. but not in these areas. I can't really go out on those Facebook community pages and start shilling SMT's really.. not without getting load of flack from people.

'Nothing is given for free', they say.. but tokens could come your way if only you would cross-post. How is all this going to be advertised?

Maybe if you convinced one of the admins of the Urbex fanpage on Facebook to join your crusade it would help achieve some interesting results...

Posted using Partiko Android

That is one way to go about it. It needs an admin with an open mind and the thinking that there's life outside Facebook.

For the most part, it's not their friends commenting .. 'ooh spooky', and the usual, 'where it that located?', but strangers.. so there is hope.

Worth a shot!

A good idea. Although, I think airdrops heavily devalue a token of any kind. It seems what mostly happens. Just a thought :0)

There are some people attending SF4 who have experience of this. I am going to be asking question.. lots of em!

It's a fair point you make, and one I will highlight to those who have experience.

That will be really useful - there's lots I don't understand about creating a token on steem-engine already, so any further enlightenment, posts, will be excellent :)

Well as far as creating a 'real' token on there, I don't have the experience.

The chops token died a death after HF21 as the !CHOPS command no longer works and try as I may.. my request of kicking it off again is falling on deaf ears.

Oh, that's what happened to chops - I have tried to use it.

It's dead.. sorry to say. Some of the other non-tribe ones may have met the same fate.

While STINC has a testnet up, they have not publicly given away the address of a working API node on the testnet, only the address to a seed node.

If I had a node, I still could only use the cli_wallet to do SMT operations, as none of the libraries has been updated.

It might be working, but I can not test it.

I can make a post about what I could find in the code - has nobody else made a good post yet ??

There has been very little said and more recently the blog posts have started to dry up again. Has no progress been made at all? I don't delve into that side at all, so cant tell you anything.

I am sure, progress has been made, but the tools for me to look at it are kind of missing still.

I hope you come back from Steemfest and can educate us all about this! I'm far from being an expert, but I think SMTs brings Steemit closer to the Ethereum model, which propelled it financially, but also had significant flaws.
There's a lot of great urbex stuff on YouTube (same with climbing and bouldering, which is my passion). I think one way to attract other urbexers to Steemit is to point out that they could make small amounts of cash via Dtube. YouTube rewards have plummeted recently. And Dtube now allows people to upload their old videos to the platform - I think they get paid in DTC rather than Steem for this. If that worked, that would be one way of building up your tribe, and then you could add the SMT as it grows.
Have you tried Instagram? I've dipped into it, but I've just never got organised enough to use it regularly. But I do notice that it's a brilliant way to pick up followers for your niche. Just post photos and add the relevant hashtags (and of course a link to your post). I think it would be a great way to get outside attention for your Steemit urbex blog posts. That dilapidated adventure park shot would definitely attract attention.
