Bounty for Joining Celebrities to Steemit: Phase 2

in #steem8 years ago

Need community inputs, ideas, and opinions!

Phase 1 is complete.

We have a list of 500+ celebrities and people of influence who could add tremendously to the Steemit community and social platform.

This initiative was initiated by none other than our own @ned in his post: It's Time for a Steem Bounty System!

The list of ~500 celebrities and influencers is compiled in two different posts: Post 1 of 2 (1-250) and Post 2 of 2 (251-531), with more likely to be added.  These are some of the celebrities and influencers our community should encourage to join Steemit. The criteria and other details are in the posts.

On to Phase 2!

@ned provided further insights and ideas.

I find @ned to be an out-of-the-box thinker. If I read his comment correctly, he is proposing a Bidding for Bounties initiative to incentivize community members. Everyone in the Steemit community will be able to proactively bid on different people on the list hey think they can get to join Steemit. The lowest bidder for each name would get the assignment, which would have a limited period to successfully get the person to join, verify, and recognize the facilitating member. After the allotted time, the bidding would open up again for others to try.

I like @ned’s idea but have some concerns:

  1. Participation. Normally bidding activities go upwards.  But in this case it would go to the lowest bidder.  Not sure if such a process will generate the same enthusiasm
  2. Quality. It would be easy for anyone to just bid one SD lower, even if they don't have a chance to actually get the Celeb to join. This may cause less capable people to get the job, while demotivating those likely to succeed.
  3. Verification. How do we verify if the Celeb joined because of that person, versus another’s influence, or just by chance? This combines with #2 (Quality).  A smart bidder would just outbid the top 30 in hopes one of them joins for some other reason. If we had a valid referral system, which could attest to who brought someone in, that would be a big help (hint, hint, hint to the Dev’s)
  4. Administration. The bidding, which must be fair, might take some infrastructure to pull off. (I am not a software infrastructure kind of guy, so we would need to get someone tech savvy to make that happen - is someone up for this?).  This process would also require continual management as well. Timers will cycle out and the process must begin again. Validation must be confirmed to update the list and make sure bounties are paid properly.

Alternative?

Given the complexities above, it may be simpler if @ned, or other specified parties, just bucket the 500 into groups for rewards. Something like this (example for discussion purposes):

  • Tier 1: Top 50 'most wanted' $XXXX SD
  • Tier 2: Next 100 'elites' $XXX SD
  • Tier 3: Last 350 'celebs' $XX SD

For any given month (or designated time period), if @ned or other Dev's want to specify a 'bonus' for a particular celeb(s), then that can be added. This lends to the overall freshness and marketing to keep the community interested, while giving the Dev’s flexibility to direct the community to preferred potential contributors.

We then make a requirement for the Celeb to mention the Steemit user who brought them into the community by name in their introduceyourself post in addition to the normal user verification steps (or if we had a valid referral system, that could automate the process). We then publish updates each week for the bounties, giving recognition/fame and SD to the members who expanded our community.

I'm sorry if I missed this but how are you going to prove who was the actual account who brought them into Steemit. I'm sure it will be a range of people influencing their decision.

That is one of the challenges to overcome. If we had a referral system which could attest, that would be great, but we don't have one yet. And I think it is pretty low on the Dev's list of features to deploy. Many other dragons to slay first. So we may have to get creative! Any thoughts?

We could just give them the benefit of the doubt. If the celebrity they actually bid for joins, they get the reward. There is a chance that that celebrity may have joined on their own - but it is not a huge chance. The cost / difficulty of trying to prove it wasn't just a coincidence seems to outweigh the likelihood the person joined on their own.

That is an option. My fear is people would try and game-the-system and outbid all the top people on the list? But it is an option. Definitely the lowest resource impact.

Ok, the two options coming to mind. 1/ let's do a ceiling of 500 STEEM Power per head. Perhaps contestants can then bid lower to get the opportunity. Bidding closes in one week. Then one month to get an intro post or first post from the celeb. 2/ Alternatively gather up all who want to participate, then randomly doll out celeb assignments, equal number of celebs per person. Then at the end of the month successes pay 500 SP per and there can be a bonus for 1st 2nd and 3rd. Thoughts?

@ned can you do something about this guy in the post? High SP and hes serial downvoting new users. Needs stopping asap. I tried getting a bunch of people to his his profile but yeh i am small fish. Trying to do my bit. Blocktrades tried to give it a push as well. Look into it please it could discourage alot of new users. Not sure of a solution though. He was banned by cheetah bot and since has been on a mission... He even made a post mocking steemit over the fact hes doing it.

@ned if we randomly assign celebs to a pool of the willing, we are missing out on potential organic connections some may have with people on the list. "she is my cousins BFF" That kind of thing. I would think we would want to capitalize on such social connections.

So if you are still wanting the reverse bidding, we need to get one of the tech/web enthusiasts to build a quick site to track all those transactions/requests. Do you recommend anyone? Is anyone reading this interested?

The other piece is visibility. I recommend you create a post with this information. If it comes from you, it will both gain the right visibility and have the necessary authenticity.

Ok let me know if you would be up for deciding if someone was actually referred and by whom. I was trying to help us from the problem where people claim to be the referrer but let's take this as an experiment. Let's do 500 SP for referrals for celebs on the list by anyone for the next month?

@ned, how about we do something like this:

And either YOU need to post this referral program to make it legitimate (as I am not paying out the bonus) and make it highly visible to the community - OR - I can post a blog with instructions and details but need you and other Dev's to upvote/endorse it as legitimate which will also get the necessary visibility across the community. Your choice. Let me know.

However this plays out, it's a Herculean task! Good luck everyone that has a crack at it!

Thanks for the support. Any crazy, brilliant, or crazy-brilliant ideas?

I'll keep you posted ;)

One thought is you could give the person a "x day" time limit. If they do not recruit the person in x amount of time, it moves on to the next highest bidder.

Another thought is you could have them put up a wager of like 1/100 the amount they bid. Example if they want 500 SBD for recruiting Brittany Spears, they must pay 5 SBD to 'play'. This would prevent people from gaming the system by hoping to just get lucky, and keep it for people who actually think they have a chance to recruit the person.

[Edit] Also, they would only pay the 'wager' if they were awarded the lowest bid.

Great work Matt!

Let's see if we can set it up so that st's easy on us verifiers. How about if the celeb mentions who brought them to the site, then consider the bounty won by that person. 500 Steem per successful invitation.

From here we just need to announce the bounty :)

Agreed. Lessening the impact on verifiers is important from a scale-ability perspective!
As part of the payout requirements, we can have the Celebrity mention the referring Steemian by name in their 'introduction' or 'introducemyself' post. That would be sufficient for the payout. Easy.

Next steps is Announcement! We need this to get the right visibility. We want every Steemian to be informed and motivated to do their best. Two options Ned: You can post this bounty program from your top-tier account. @ned, @dan, @dantheman all have sufficient followers to get it going with a bang. The other option is, I can post the details and you/others can upvote it. That is less optimal. It is better to come directly from you guys, but I can pull it together if you want to go the alternate route.

Let me know.
