Black Mirror Steem Edition

I can't help it. My mind goes there. When I think about all the different use cases for Steem, I can't help but also think about all the ways this could and in all likelihood would go horribly wrong.

Imagine this, we're over a decade into the future, and STEEM, as well as the entire cryptocurrency market has caught on. Your grandma can use it. It's super easy and convenient. The Steem blockchain has thousands of Dapps, but it has one master dapp that has largely replaced Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and all the major players in social media. STEEM is sitting pretty at around $300 and we're all rich. The current whales here are among the richest people in the world. Their upvotes influence industry, politics, and pop culture. We are king makers here, if you "go viral" on the Steem Blockchain, it's a life changing event.

For all of us here now, what do we become? With a self upvote being obviously so valuable, does that become the norm and socially acceptable to just upvote yourself 10x per day, and the exception curating some sort of new content? If Steem were at that price my current upvote would be around $210, so that's a little over 2k a day I could make through self upvoting. I suppose I could make even more by posting content and if the same people were here, also super rich now, I'd make a ton more. Would we feel obligated to do more with our upvotes with them being that valuable?

We would have the power to change the world. Would we? Or would we all just keep it all for ourselves? What about family? There would be people in your family that didn't get in on the crypto market in the early days. They're still struggling in a world constantly being withered away by corrupt financial institutions and automation. You have the power to disperse money at the click of a button, and they can SEE exactly what you're doing with it. How would this shape our society?

Would everyone become our sycophants? You post a picture of your dinner and it gets 10k comments from people praying for an upvote, that the lords of Steem will bless them.

In the same way we're able to mobilize to get STEEM listed on this, that or the other, imagine we do that same thing but with politicians. Politician A wants to give gains made through crypto a lower tax rate, while Politician B wants to tax us higher and calls us lazy bums feeding off the middle class. They both have Steem accounts. Who do we vote(upvote) for?

How important is anonymity now? Everyone knows how much money you have, what your upvote is worth, and what you vote on. How many instances of people getting robbed for their keys would we see? Who would you be able to trust if you've got several million in digital cash and everyone knows it?

Am I the only one thinking about these things? Do any of you ever daydream about the far future of Steem if it catches on? Tell me your Black Mirror scenarios in the comments!

Wow!!! I really do not go this far with my thoughts about steem. All I think about is how cryptocurrency can fully become mainstream, so that the FUD can be less.

Bought at least, I have dreamt about steem going to $500 before 😄.

Yea, it's pretty crazy, if Steem went to $500, the OG users of the Steem blockchain would be some of the most powerful people in the world. O_O

It’s pretty easy to see how dystopian it could get when people are too stupid too see anything but their own pathetic greed and selfishness 😆 the public wallet thing has been a concern to me from the outset. I like some transactions being public and others not so much so have been vaguely interested in some of the privacy crypto’s but haven’t bought any because money and that the process makes my brain shut down.

But there are reasons I only post stuff online that I’d be okay sharing with a random stranger in person anyway 😜

Wow that's sure thought provoking but certainly not completely unlikely. Maybe not that much but then its the future I think and who knows. We are the forefront of the next society 💯🐒

I have these thoughts whenever ANY new technology comes out. There's always really awesome ways to use it and then there's always some really horrible ways to abuse it. I've always come to the conclusion that it's people at the helm of all these decisions. Its human nature that guides us, for better or for worse. We, as humans, NEED a continuous conscious evolution of ourselves to keep up with evolving technology, or we'll invent the coolest thing, then use it to destroy ourselves...
