Steem - Network Growth
The number of users on Steem is not easy to get at. It's the holy grail of metrics to understand how the network is growing. We recently passed half a million Steem accounts but is there any way to get behind the number of users and figure out how many unique users are on the platform?

Today I will examine in detail the "#introduceyourself" tag and supplement the analysis with some detail from user profiles.
Introduce Yourself Posts
When many users first join Steemit (or shortly after) they post an post tagged with "#introduceyourself". This introduction post is not mandatory but it serves as a way to introduce yourself to the community. If you put in a big effort and it gets seen by a generous whale, you may even get a nice upvote to get you started on Steemit.
Count of "#introduceyourself"
This graph plots the number of posts with the "#introduceyourself" tag since Steemit began.
- We see a big increase since July 17.
- Some accounts post multiple times but most only once.
I have excluded the double counting from this graph.
Multiple Introduceyourself posts in 2017
Most accounts post only one or some 2 "#introduceyourself" posts. It can be seen as "Tag abuse" where people repeatedly post to this tag to get large payouts. This practice seems to be in the increase when we look at the following graph which plots for each month in 2017 and for each account that used this tag, the number of posts.
The dates shown here are averaged so that the count is included in the month with the mean posting date
- One account posted 430 #introduceyourself posts!
The mean date of the posts for this account was July.
Profile Locations
Another useful item to get a feel for unique accounts is the profile location. If this is filled out it's an indication that this account is not just a sock puppet or bot.
- We see a very similar profile to the "#introduceyourself" tags. Coincidently there is also a similar number of profiles filled out as accounts that made an "#introduceyourelf" post. (Around 55k)
Observations
- 55,767 accounts have location specified in their profile
- 55,258 accounts have posted an "#introduceyourself" post
- 20,302 accounts have both an "#introduceyourself" post and also specified a location

i used to go over introduceyourself tag and greet newcomers but as the numbers grow i have witnessed more and more tag abuse and literally i spend minutes and minutes to find a genuine quality intro. i gave up but instead find out some great initiatives of others that make post or resteem such quality newcomers and i greet them as well!
I think that this section in our statistics - is the most vague. Because it is very difficult to understand the present the number of real and unique users. Here it must be remembered that some users have opened 2 or more accounts by connecting them not their names , but the names of their relatives. But behind the scenes is the same person. There are various violations. Some users do not hide your second account, but how to make such calculations? It's too hard, I think. Overall , of course it's nice to see such a surge after 2017-07. It is interesting to look at the activity of new users. Thank you @eroche for this information and I wish You success in further studies.
Much lower than I would have though. However there are a lot more voters than writers and this might undercount voters.
These numbers greatly underestimate real users. Many people on Steemit are anonymous. Thats why it's so difficult to get at the real figure.

People are actually getting registered everyday. Some get up to $100 on their first post being supported by their friends or colleagues. That will give them more energy to do better but for those that don't know anyone here, even with good post compared to the one with much upvote or comments, it's weird. That hardly support ordinary people out here.
It's a big hill to climb at the start for most.
This growth is very impressive. The community is growing very fast.
