Have you ever been curious how much has been paid out and how this has changed in the last year and a half.

This post looks in some detail at payouts since the beginning of Steemit way back in March 2016.
Bear in mind the amounts shown are SBD and they have not been adjusted, some authors will have been paid out in Steem which has increased in value since launch.

Total Payout (Posts ex Comments)

So how much has been paid out in total?

Post Payouts:SBD 21,125,310
Author Payouts:SBD 17,039,548

If this is the first time your coming across Steemit, you may be interested in reading some more about where does the money come from?

21.1m is an interesting figure but the story doesn't end there. Lets dig into this data in more detail.

Payouts Per Month

Payouts over time are largely driven by the Steem price. In July 2016 and August 2017 there was a large increase in Steem Price driving the trends in daily payouts.

Payouts in 2017

While its interesting to look at the full history, its also helpful to just focus on 2017, where there have been very different dynamics driving the payouts over the course of the year.

In June of 2017 there was a huge spike in payouts (over 4m for the month) which was a result of a hardfork and change to how the rewards were distributed from that point on but also a price of Steem of $2 plus. The rewards have since returned to more normalised levels.

The stand out point here for me is that the average payout on posts is currently around 3 SBD and has been relatively stable for several months although it does appear to be declining.

While the Average Value of around SBD 3 doesn't feel right to most people on Steemit, especially if your new, it may make more sense to look at the median payouts, although this metric is skewed in the other direction largely being influenced by spam.

Payouts in September

In order to get a closer look at how a small group of authors are influencing the payouts lets look at the payouts for September but with some statistics calculated based on the unique authors.

Total Payouts to Unique Accounts in September

The top paying author had total posts valued at over 10k, while the top 5 authors had a median income of over 9k in September. That is a nice wage indeed for posting on a social media platform.

Glaring figures. Lots of people are getting rich on this platform.

There is such a disparity between the mean and median which implies there are lots of outliers.

very interesting post, I never looked at the total payouts

Although the average payout is quite small in most peoples eyes, it helps me to remember that Steem is currently only valued at around $1.

Should this number increase next year, and I'm almost certain it will, the hard work put in currently, for a high rep etc will surely pay dividends in time.

Thanks for the information @eroche.

Well said. I think now is not a time to worry too much about payouts, its time to build your followers, connections and capabilities. It was more of a curiosity for me to see how much has been paid out. 21m is a big figure. Especially considering a significant chunk of this was paid out when Steem was under 30 cents.

Yes, a massive number!

I enjoy looking at numbers too and thinking about what they mean. Curation analysis seems to be where I've landed for how, but I'm looking to delve in other areas too. Thanks!

I'm thinking this means if I get over $3 per post - I'm doing good. I hate to see the money bunched up on top, but there are still opportunities for us down here.

I am aiming to earn for $10 a post and then $20 etc on what i publish. But I do way better on commenting and curating for the moment. I get better money curating the posts that pay $10 - $60 at my low weight so the whales are almost irrelevant to me. I don't look at posts that are going over $100 for the most part unless to comment only.

It's crazy that they put themselves out of my league lol.

While you focused on payouts, I also notice the jump in post count per month beginning in June 2017. This shows big positive growth for the platform, which is very nice to see.

There was a large influx of people coinciding with a jump in the Steem price.
