Welcome to Humans of Star Trek, a Star Trek inspired motivation series.

These are the voyages of Starfleet personnel who came together to give us a future that humanity craves for and deserves. Together, let's boldly go where no one has gone before.

Hoshi Sato was a noted linguist who served as the communications officer under Captain Jonathan Archer on the Enterprise. But the Hoshi Sato I am talking about today is not the friendly, chirpy, lovely Hoshi of the Enterprise. Today's quote comes from Empress Hoshi Sato, a brutal monarch that ruled planet Earth with an iron fist after rising to power through deceit and betrayal. Confused? Stay with me.

Science fiction has had this fascination with parallel universes ever since the concept found its way into popular culture. Star Trek is one of the key reasons why this concept has found itself in the popular culture. Star Trek's parallel universes, often referred to as mirror universes, have made for some epic television viewing and some spectacular storytelling. Today's quote is from Hoshi Sato of a mirror universe.

While the concept of a mirror universe in itself is a fun and interesting one, what I find intriguing is how much these stories are inspired by the real world we live in.

In Star Trek the mirror universe acts as the counterpart to the "prime universe". Essentially the prime universe of the Star Trek future is the one we are supposedly living in while the mirror universe is the one where we are all pretty bad dudes and dudettes.

The mirror universe depicts humans as how we could have turned out (or are currently turning into, depending on how seriously you take science fiction) if we allowed some of our terrible instincts to become our dominant instincts. It depicts our civilization as having evolved into one where our global governance is a singular monarchy with almost entirely militarisitic ambitions.

The world, as shown in the mirror universe, is run by people with deceit, envy, greed, hatred, lust for power, and an affinity for vengeance in their hearts. And success only comes to those who have these traits in abundance. It sounds scary, doesn't it? But then it is just science fiction. Or is it?

From where I see it some of Star Trek's mirror universes, especially the one featuring the crew of the Enterprise, are clearly a take on the worst of humanity. Even in the real world it often seems like all the bad actors with hatred and divisive skills are in power and running our world. But I think the mirror universe also serves a purpose that Star Trek's writers may or may not have intended for it to serve.

The Star Trek mirror universe serves as a reminder that the best of humanity has not lost. It reminds us that even though we live in times that seem desperate and often terrible, the best of humanity - kindness, generosity, co-operation, fellowship, love, hope, science, philosophy, et al - has not given up on us. If we care to look for them, we will find those heroes who want the best of humanity to be our collective global future living amongst us.

I am confident that no matter how bad things get we will not devolve into a Star Trek mirror universe. We will become the linguist Hoshi Sato of the prime universe who will help bring people who don't understand each other closer by enabling communication between them.

We will not let Empress Hoshi Sato take over our planet.

Star trek is truly a mirror of the society. It may seem like science fiction but in this world we also have traits of a mirror universe and a prime universe. But if we could have more of the prime universe it would be better. Wouldn't it?

Agreed. Let's hope the prime universe is where we end up in the future :D
