The Star Trek society, any signs?
Fellow Sci-Fi steeaminans, I would like to ask you what ideas and technologies that were presented in Science Fiction works, are showing up today and start to take form? Let's talk about a couple of them that are inspired by the Star Trek series.
A little context on the Star Trek society.
Gene Roddenberry, the creator of the Star Trek universe, told a story about human nature. The relevant part starts with a third world war, after which humanity realized that a world where wars can happen is not a nice one. And we started working together to a common goal of human evolution on a global scale. We then were able to abolish famine, poverty, and disease. On top of that we also brought abundance to the planet. This, in turn, led to a system in which money was no longer necessary because with abundance come unlimited opportunities. Thus a world where everybody was able to follow their dreams was possible.
And one of man's greatest dream is to go to the stars, and mankind was able to do this as one united planet. A very nice story :)
Technologies that made that society possible.
I will present three recurring technologies from the story. The first is kind of far to imagine, the second and third are already happening.
1. The replicator.
This is the closest thing to magic that can exist on earth :). It is a device that can assemble matter in any way. This brings abundance to a whole new level, because anything needed could be instantly materialized.
"Tea. Earl grey, hot." is one of captain's Picard recurring lines in The Next Generation series. And after saying this, a cup of hot earl grey tea shows up in a "hole" in the wall. So some kind of molecular 3d printing that has infinite material and can combine it in any way you want. :) I hope this comes soon...
2. The Holodeck.
This is Star Trek's version of virtual reality, but with a twist. Instead of a visor and other technologies that we have to wear in order to access virtual reality. There is a room that is able to generate that virtual reality with physical manifestations. The characters would constantly live out books and other stories. Immersing themselves in a reality that you could touch, smell, taste and interact with.
This type of fully immersed virtual reality will happen, maybe not in the form presented by Star Trek, but it will find o way of manifesting.
3. The medical tricorder.
In the Star Trek universe, this is a mobile healthcare device that is able to obtain a lot of information instantly just by scanning, nothing invasive. And the good news is that this technology is here.
XPrize Qualcomm Tricorder. XPrize is a solution outsourcing mechanism that defines a problem and it's solution. They then offer a lot of money to anyone that comes up the answer that meets all the requirements. And the Star Trek inspired tricorder was one of their prizes.
