Cleveland Browns – 2017-18 NFL Season Analysis

Will It Ever Come Together?

The Browns have been in a franchise slump since the late 1980’s. Last season they ranked nearly last in both points scored and points allowed. The team is desperately looking for answers. Over the off-season the Browns didn’t do nearly as much as they need to turn this around full circle. They hope their young draft picks can provide enough talent to at least light a spark for this organization.

Key Drops

QB – Josh McCown
QB/WR – Terrelle Pryor
WR – Andrew Hawkins
TE – Gary Barnidge

Key Additions

WR – Kenny Britt
RB – Kevin Zeitler
C – J.C. Tretter
CB – Jason McCourty
QB – Brock Osweiler

Rookie Quarterback

The Browns will look to their 2nd round draft pick, QB from Notre Dame, Deshone Kizer to fill in the role as a starting quarterback. The rookie QB outperformed Cody Kessler and Brock Osweiler in training camp and will get the nod in Week 1. Kizer will have a solid o-line and a great pair of legs that can provide for some key yardage on the ground. Other than that, he will not have many weapons to work with as he tries to make a name for himself as a starting quarterback in the NFL.

Run Game

Isaiah Crowell and Duke Johnson will be the key players in the Browns backfield. With decent blocking in front, you can expect the two of these backs to put up solid numbers this year. Duke should get the brunt of the passing down opportunities while Crowell will most likely fill the role as a lead back.

Down Field

It’s been 2 years since the Browns star receiver Josh Gordon was seen on the field. It doesn’t look like he will be re-instated to the league any time soon. The Browns brought in veteran receiver Kenny Britt over the off-season to bring a sense of senior leadership to the receiving core. Expect second year receiver, Corey Coleman from Baylor to be the go-to receiver for the Browns this season. Coleman missed 6 games with a broken hand in his rookie season, but he flashed his potential during Week 2 vs. the Ravens when he had 8 catches for 104 yards and 2 touchdowns. The Browns drafted TE out of Miami, David Njoku in the first round of the 2017 draft. Njoku will be the starting tight-end now that Barnidge is no longer on the team.

The Defense

The Browns have a new defensive coordinator heading into 2017. Gregg Williams will take over calling plays after 16 seasons with 5 other teams. Williams has seen success in his career and in 2009 he won a Super Bowl title as defensive coordinator for the Saints. In the first round of this year’s draft, the Browns brought in DE Myles Garrett from Texas A&M and S Jabrill Peppers from Michigan. This will provide a much needed young boost to this battered defense. After last season, the only way to go is up.

Overview

Never expect too much from the Cleveland Browns.
at least for now

Awesome that the rookie QB from Notre Dame, Kizer is in line to start week 1.. still time for that to change but im rooting for him.
Fun fact: Isaiah Crowell is only 24 years old going into his 4th season...
