Denver Broncos – 2017-18 NFL Season Analysis -

Source:

Things are not looking too good in the Mile High City as Denver appears to have plenty of mountains but no quarterback. The Broncos head into the 2017 season deciding between quarterbacks Trevor Semien and Paxton Lynch, both options have proven to be extremely underwhelming; especially on a team that won it 2 years ago with many of the same players on the roster.

Key Additions -

Vance Joseph, Coach -

Obviously a downgrade from Veteran Coach Gary Kubiak due to pure experience, Vance Joseph steps into the spotlight as Denver's head coach with the retirement of Kubiak due to health reasons. Don't count Joseph out, thought. Vance has had a few NFL gigs before his promotion to Head Coach, including ventures with the Dolphins, 49ers, Texans and Bengals. Joseph also becomes the 6th active black head coach which accounts for 20% of the leagues head coaches now.

Ron Leary, DT -

To help protect their QB (who will 100% need it this season), the Broncos also signed Guard Ron Leary and Offensive Tackle Menelik Watson to a 4 and 3-year contracts. Though these additions are not team changing, Leary comes from a Cowboys offensive line that was highly touted these past few seasons and hopes to enhance that offensive line that allowed a ton of sacks in 2016.

The Broncos signed Tackle, Domata Peko, DE Zach Kerr and LB Kasim Edebali this offseason to help bolster a defense that saw LB DeMarcus Ware announced his retirement this offseason.

The Scoop -

This offseason has not been one of Denver's strongest as they lost Head Coach Gary Kubiak to retirement (due to heath reasons) and didn't make any key additions aside from some small depth chart changes. This raises many questions as people seem to think the Broncos defense will be just as much as a problem as it has been for the last two years but thanks to a plethora of injuries, the Broncos are looking decimated defensively.

The Broncos will start the 2017-2018 season with three of their front line starters including Derek Wolfe, Jared Crick and Billy Winn. Denver beat writers appear to be nervous claiming those front three set the table for the Linebackers to get easier tackles and were part of the reason this defense was so potent over the years.

Brandon Marshall, Denver's top Linebacker, said "You kind of feel the morale go down a little bit, but we have to control what we can control. We can’t control who goes down and what happens. We can control our efforts. The guys backing up Crick, Wolfe and Billy they have to up the ante. This is their chance.”

In the last two years, Marshall has 27 games, 157 COMB tackles, 112 individual tackles.

If Denver is going to want to compete this year, they are going to need a bunch of guys who are "Next-Up" on the roster to show up. This includes their Paxton Lynch OR Trevor Semien needing to show that are capable of leading a team in the NFL and the defense to step in effectively while their starters are out. All of these prove to be difficult feats in the NFL and that's why I would dub the Denver Broncos as one of this offseason's biggest losers.
