Forbes list of 100 highest paid Athletes

in #sports7 years ago (edited)

Hey Steemians,

A couple of days ago, I made a post on Interesting facts about the Forbes list of billionaires.Today I take another Forbes list, the Forbes list of Highest paid athletes for 2017. If you are ready, I am ready, lets dig in and see what we can find :).

Ronaldo highest paid athlete for the second consecutive year

I love my posts to be short and concise so I wont be pasting the enitre Forbes list , but you can check it out directly on the Forbes website here. It is ronaldo's second straight year as the highest paid athlete, not smooth sailing though, for 15 years before last year it was always either Tiger woods or Mr moneyman, Mayweather

Serena the only woman on the list

Serena appears on the list as the 51st highest paid athlete with an estimated 27 million dollars in total earnings during the year reviewed. There are a lot of women doing great things in sports, hopefully we have more women on the next Forbes list.

Basketball Players Dominate

Only 11 sports are represented on the list. Basketball has the highest number of representatives with 32 players featuring in the top 100, they are lead by Lebron James who is the second highest paid athlete with an estimated 86.2 million dollars in total earnings.

Endorsement just as important as salary/winnings

It might be a bit more straightforward to just find contract/winnings information to determine how much an athlete makes in a year but that would not give the full picture. Kudos to forbes for going through the arduous task of tracking athletes endorsements, image rights etc but how significant is endorsement earnings to an athlete. I took the data and tried to find out what percentage of an athletes total earnings were from endorsements. Here is what I found

As you can see from the above analysis, Tiger woods, Usain bolt,Phil Mickelson and Roger federer are almost entirely dependent on endorsement money. Tiger woods for example would probably not make this list without his endorsements as he made only 107,000 dollars from playing golf. Interesting to note that Roger federer pulled in a staggering 58 million dollars from endorsements alone, that is the highest amount made from endorsements by a single athlete.

Excellent post. Thanks for Share!

funny thing is, none of this guys ever made Billions from sport except Micheal Jordan and Magic Johnson

Remember this is just earnings from one year but you are probably right. By the way both of the guys you talk about built massive businesses.

Yes, colossal empires....

Nice Info!

Hello nice post, please try and reference your images before they can be curated. Thank you

Awesome post.

I was a little surprised to see not even one baseball player in your list of top athletes by dependence on endorsements. I guess their salaries are enough for them :)

Well baseball players earn little in endorsements compared to others. I analysed all the data but only put the first screenshot on my post so I could focus on the guys really dependent on endorsements. Here is the second screenshot with a couple of baseball players :)

Thanks for the additional info. Great post!

Nice to see basketball still shining at number one and I think football (aka soccer, I am European) is even more popular overall. It surprises me that it is not number one.

Soccer is most popular for sure but that doesn't necessarily translate into higher earnings. By the way all basketball players on the list play in the NBA(USA). Earning potential in the NBA is massive.
