Thought of the Day #1: What If You are Immortal...

in #spirituality6 years ago

Take this as a thought experiment and try to experience the world in a whole new perspective. You don't have to try and get religious or skeptic. Just relax, calm down and imagine a beginning or an end for your consciousness. Can you imagine a beginning of your consciousness? You may remember your childhood. But your parents and relatives remember your infanthood. You may even have photographic or videographic evidence of of time you don't remember. So can you prove without reasonable doubt that "You" or a version of "You" existed before you were even born to your parents?

Time After Death

A samurai once asked Zen Master Hakuin where he would go after he died.
Hakuin answered, "How am I supposed to know?"
"How do you know? You're a Zen master?" exclaimed the samurai.
"Yes, but not a dead one," Hakuin answered.

Nobody has given me conclusive proof that consciousness ends at the death of the physical human body. Nobody has given me conclusive proof that consciousness ends at the death of a non-human body. So it is wise to entertain the possibility that the consciousness may prevail n some form after what we perceive as death. It may even prevail after a kind of death we don't even understand (A death in a different plane/dimension)

So ask yourself what to do if this was the case. entertain the possibility that you may have more than this one life to live. How would you adjust your priorities if you realized that you were immortal? (in a certain way) Would your values change? Would you get crazier and take more risks o get become more tranquil and relaxed? Would you put more time into a cause you believe in rather than mere survival? Would you endure more suffering?

... Or would You Fall Into Despair

Imagine one lifetime after the next after the next after the next after the next after the next. Is this desirable? Would it be more desirable if you had amnesia after each life and if you had to start each life fresh? Would your lifetimes be like a history that doesn't repeat but rhymes over an over again? would you move between prosperity and being broken apart? Would you be born in heavenly or hellish planes or would you be born in places where senses themselves are completely different?

Eternal Consciousness in a Changing Universe

What if you were born in the times of ancient civilizations? What if you were born in th middle ages? What if you were born during colonization and world wars? How would you have reacted? How would you react to a future if you were born into one? It is said that at one point, the universe would stop expanding and start contracting to a single point to be followed by another big bang. What would life be like during such a process?

What if you had already passed through this a zillion different times and still don't remember any of this? What if yr preoccupations with the world are clouding your ability to access those memoirs?

Put Yourself in immortal Shoes

90% of the post ended up being questions. These are questions that is worth pondering. Asking these questions have guided my life and has given me great insights into things I don't know.

Don't be afraid to look like an idiot who doesn't know a damn thing. But dread the very thought of having to be wrong on something. - @vimukthi (Makishima Shougo)

Well, I'm a Transhumanist, so I fully expect that within a few decades many people will be asking this question as technology allows us to live exponentially longer lives, even possibly forever if aging can be ceased altogether. I, for one, welcome and embrace the monumental day when we defeat the disease that is aging, and move into a world where time is no longer a limiting factor for man to pursue his endeavors!

I'm just glad that more people like you exist. There was a time people achieved sainthood for refusing to take medicine. Source The biggest challenge would actually be how we handle memory. If we could boost cell regeneration to live few hundred years, how would we handle all that newly acquired information. But then again take a look back at your childhood and think about how things have changed. This massive changes are going to end up being a common thing in the memories of those who live long.

When money is not a concern people can make magnificent things just as people's activities changed when starvation was no longer a real concern. When there is at least 20,000 years or even more(at this point current max human life would seem like 2 seasons passing) I think things like world peace could end up being an inevitability. https://steemit.com/ecotrain/@vimukthi/imagine-there-was-a-war-and-everybody-would-rather-watch-netflix

You are absolutely correct. For the vast majority of human existence on this planet, poverty and self-denial were regarded as the ultimate in virtue. Only the Greeks in Antiquity, the Renaissance, and the Enlightenment brought with them a new system of virtues, not built on self-denial but on self-accomplishment.

As for memory, the human brain/mind is already capable of filtering out a vast majority of content that is witnesses and processes, mostly stuff that is unimportant and not worth remembering. Add to this the ability for something akin to a computer-aided memory add-on, and you could easily allow humans to mentally handle their minds for 1000's or 10,000's of years without issue.

People seem to think that death is the only motivator in life. I fundamentally disagree! If this was the case, then shouldn't our ancient ancestors have spent 100% of their time gathering and hunting for food? Why then did they take time to make cave paintings and carve small animal and fertility statues? Why then was writing created? What about art, science, philosophy? Death was not a motivator for the creation of these things, but instead it was to either serve as innovation, fulfillment, entertainment, or simply happiness and joy. Death is not a motivator, but life is. When people realize this, their whole outlook on their lives change drastically.

Forget the religious scope, our body is mortal but we are eternal.

“Yet God has made everything beautiful for its own time. He has planted eternity in the human heart, but even so, people cannot see the whole scope of God's work from beginning to end”

I think an immortal life would be dead boring. It is the thought of one's own death that brings interest into all my actions.
