1 question, 8 points of view! It's the ecoTrain Question of the Week! "What is the one mass produced and used product that you wish to change or eliminate for good to make our environment greener and safer?"

in #spiritual7 years ago

This week 9 of our passengers have posted on the QOTW and are all shown and linked below. If you never saw the QOTW before, then what happens is that we all write on the same question but from our own perspectives. We all have a unique view to share, and we find it so interesting to see what each other writes. This week there were clearly some common themes, namely plastics, but also a very nice mix of other ideas!

It is during our QOTW that we also invite you to write on this question of the week, and to post your answer tagged 'qotw' and linked in the comments below. That way we can find your post and give you our support and upvotes when we read it.

Also, we will be inviting a new passenger on board this week and will choose from those of you who write on this weeks question. Please post your answer before MONDAY 30th OCTOBER. The ecoTrain will choose a new passenger on TUSESDAY 31st OCTOBER.

So without further ado, please enjoy the answers below and as always, comment and let us know what you think and which ones you really liked!

For someone, this question is quite complex to answer it. For me, the choice is quite obvious. Wherever we go on our travels, this product is always seen around. Even in the smallest and most abandoned village in Asia, I meet soft drinks on sale. In my opinion this is a product that must first of all be excluded from your diet and the diet of your children.

Interesting facts: It estimated that around 1500 plastic bottles are thrown away… every second. We can use plastic bottles differently - these are just questions of choosing each (see video below).

I want to change the production of a product that almost everybody is using continuously everywhere on this planet. I don’t want to change the product itself because it cannot be changed.

That product is electricity, or energy in general.

The production of electricity causes an enormous amount of pollution and destruction of our environment. There’s pollution and destruction on every level on how we are producing energy. Even without disasters like:

  • The Exxon Valdez oil spill
  • The Deep Water Horizon BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico
  • The Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster
  • The Three Mile Island Nuclear Explosion
  • The Chernobyl nuclear disaster

Mass production of goods has completely revolutionized our world. These products can help lower costs and increase output by using automation and standardization and have largely replaced craft production in our society.

What's wrong with a higher standard of living? On its face - nothing. All the incentives are right - until....it breaks.

Plastic Bags.

Why, oh why oh why?

We have known for a long time that plastic bags are a bane on our environment, so why are are they still causing such a problem, especially in our oceans?

And plastic in general, I know with food packaging this gets more difficult, but we can recycle, recycle, recycle.

We need to start reversing the damage we have done to our world and that means everyone needs to play their part.

This video is quite disturbing as it shows the what has killed this beautiful whale:

This is such a great question, thank you for @sharoonyasir for proposing it and getting us all scratching our heads to think about this important question. There are SO many ways to make the world cleaner, greener and safer, but what would I choose as the most significant product to eliminate!? After some careful thought, I chose something that is ubiquitous around the whole world. We nearly all have one, and most of them cost more than anything else we will ever buy. Generally, they are not well made, nor do they suit the purpose they were intended for. What am I talking about? Houses!

Phew, there are a lot of potential answers for this question. As a passenger aboard the EcoTrain, I want to improve the world in any way I can and as a member of the Steemit homesteading community, I’m continually thinking in terms of growth and natural lifestyles. So what mass produced “product” has a hugely negative impact on both areas of my personal passion?

Of course I wanted to say plastic at first! I’m slowly learning more and more about the negative side effects of its’ inability to biodegrade. I hate watching nature documentaries and seeing the swollen corpses of animals stuffed with plastic spoons and shopping bags… bleck. It’s just depressing.

But I was also looking for a different answer. I wasn’t sure what I was looking for until it clicked… my answer is food.

Plastic bags!!!!! (by far)

It's the one thing you see floating in the rivers and blowing in the wind the most in third world countries where the trash system hasn't started up properly since the invention of plastic and the culture is still dealing with trash the way they used to in the old days: throw it in the backyard or burn it.

Though this was working fine when they only used banana leafs for plates and packaging, now a days this system of waste processing results in these pastic bags billowing in the wind as some kind of odd tree decoration.

The other things it results in is blockage of sewer drainage and animals mistakingly eating the plastic, as they have also been part of the old waste processing system and banana leaves did fine for them. They are getting sick because of it. Cows in India have been known to have kilo's of plastic in their stomach because they accidentally eat it. And that is so sad. We humans are suposed to mentor the animals in this world as they can only respond instinctively to things and we have creative inteligence, but what we do is make health hazards for them that they can not deal with.

There are scores of mass produced products that I wish weren’t produced in the first place and those that I would want to remove from the world. There is a lot that can be done to make the environment greener and the world a safer and nicer place to live in but the one thing that I despise the most currently and one that has been affecting my life in many ways is ‘cigarettes.’

If it were in my control, I would instantly burn all the cigarette producing factors in the world and would replace them with more gardens, parks and factories that recycle goods. This way the people who have jobs and can earn a living because of the cigarette factories will still have work to do and will be able to earn money, and there would be far less smoke and poison in the world.

To this week´s question I can find many answers.
Anything related to nuclear power for example.
The combustion engine with its energy inefficiency and pollution.
Products straight out of hell, like Monsanto´s Roundup or suicide seeds.
All food stuff produced by the agro-chemical complex and multinationals like Nestle.
I guess, many people would choose plastic with all its bad press of ocean pollution and stuff and write about bioplastics as an alternative, especially the incredible value and possibilities of the hemp plant, including its own cryptocurrency HempCoin (THC) 😉
All those things would be worthy topics, but their solutions require effort, money (many people cannot afford electrical cars at the moment, will have a hard time to find alternatives to plastic, can´t be bothered with checking labels in the supermarket or reading up on which companies use Monsanto products, etc.), so a lot of doing is required to avoid or oppose those things.
Since I am a big fan of non-doing I choose something else.

Plastic bags and bottles #1
Fracking #2
If we are able to make plastic into sensible products that come with a strict recycling label attached it may assist the world becoming a better place.
Fracking is a definite no, no it destroys the land, the water basin underneath the land and being done without proper permission, it must be gone!

agreed Joan! thanks for commenting!

In addition to the products you mentioned, I would eliminate all pesticides containing glyphosates.
Although you have spoken of the infamous Monsanto group wanted to point out.
