Monumento a los mártires de la religión y la patria. Reportaje fotográfico.
Fue inaugurado el 23 de Octubre de 1904, aunque la primera piedra se colocó en 1899. Se ubicó en la plaza de la Constitución (hoy plaza de España) , en sustitución de la Fuente de Neptuno, que había perdido su función con la llegada del agua corriente.
La finalidad del nuevo monumento era perpetuar el recuerdo de los innumerables mártires y de los defensores aragoneses muertos durante la Guerra de la Independencia. Otra interpretación pasaría por ser reflejo de la guerra como defensa de la patria y la religión.
De esta manera se recuperaba la simbología tradicional del lugar: aquí se encontraba la Cruz del Coso en memoria de los cristianos martirizados, hasta que fue destruida durante los Sitios
La parte arquitectónica la diseña Ricardo Magdalena y el conjunto escultórico es obra de Agustín Querol. El monumento fue sufragado por suscripción regional.
El grupo escultórico tiene tres elementos: el tema principal es un ángel que sostiene a un aragonés herido mientras señala hacia el cielo; tras el grupo, una cruz evoca el antiguo humilladero de la Cruz del Coso.
En la zona inferior del pedestal se sitúa la figura de una matrona -símbolo de Zaragoza- que sostiene un pergamino extendido y el escudo de la ciudad.
Todo el conjunto escultórico ofrece un acentuado efecto pictórico, con detalles modernistas en el tratamiento de los paños de la túnica del ángel y en el efecto del suave modelado.
En una guirnalda de palmas fundida en bronce se lee la siguiente frase: " Victrix Caesaraugusta pietas innumeris martibus pro fide et patria".
