SML Feedback Contest Round 2

9 Days To Enter And Earn Points!

The main focus of this Feedback Contest, is for Musicians and Producers that are participating in the SML Challenge and the Beat Battle League for Season 2. I find that having a fresh set of ears listening to your track always comes in handy! And you never know, that bit of feedback you receive, just might put you in the winners slot. And since I am a big fan of the Music Community here on Steemit, I have taken up the torch for this contest.

I will be awarding Steem Prizes, Voiceshares and some Whaleshares. And @chiefmappster has donated to a stack of VoiceShares to kick this contest off, and that will allow participants to earn more points for the challenges leaderboard, and move them up the ladder.

Consider this an open invitation to all, submit your tracks, and give some positive and constructive feedback to your fellow Producers and Musicians taking part in the challenges. :-)

The last round was really great, and thanks to all who took part! So let's keep that momentum going with Round 2 with some awesome feedback, that is detailed as you can get.

Good Luck!

The Rules of the Road:

  1. Your track can be of any genre.

  2. Producers/Musicians: If you submit a track for feedback, in order to qualify, you need to give feedback to others on at least 1 track.

  3. Feedbackers: Provide constructive and positive feedback. BS comments will get a big red flag.

  4. There will be three tiers of prizes for the best feedback provided, judged by yours truly.

  5. Both the Producer and the person giving the feedback will get a 50/50 split of the prizes. And the Producer/Musician will earn points for the Challenges.

  6. In order to be awarded VoiceShares/Whaleshares, you will need a Openledger Account.

Prize Pool:

First Prize: 5 Steem & 10 Whaleshares & 20 VoiceShares = 40 Points/2

Second Prize: 3 Steem & 6 Whaleshares & 16 VoiceShares = 30 Points/2

Third Prize: 2 Steem & 4 Whaleshares & 10 VoiceShares = 20 Points/2

So let's get it going on! Submit your tracks, and earn some Challenge Points...

And don't forget... show some love to your fellow Musicians and Producers with an Upvote!

The Feedback Contest: Round Two is now live, and the current dates for submissions are:

Jan. 29th until Feb 7th 12 midnight est. Winners announced on Feb 8th.

First entry of the year let me know what you think. Appreciate all the support let do thisssssss! https://steemit.com/smlchallenge/@basedrod/sml-round-2-entry-clean-n-fresh-by-basedrod

Oh shit that's groovy!
The piano is just sexy and the way the drums come in is smooth as hell.
I don't really have much critique for this in general. I think the 808 could be a bit louder or maybe layered with another much quiter 808 an octave higher.
Other than that, the mix is super clean and it really gets me moving!

Here's my entry for this week. I'd also like to say thanks so much to everyone for their feedback in last weeks contest. It means a lot that people took the time to check out my track and give such detailed feedback. I know I have a long way to go yet but I'm constantly working on it. Anyways, Here's my track:

Here is my thoughts, notes, etc.

  • I like the melody, the bass line is kind. The energy is there in this track. It has a commercial edge to it. I feel like it has all of the elements for this to be super powerful. it could feel like an idea, a 2nd draft maybe? What I am thinking is I think you might be able to go a bit further with it. maybe record some of your parts out and process them a bit or a bunch, until they start sounding like great sounds you maybe never heard before.

  • ofcourse what i am saying is coming from the idea, that you wanna make this the track of the night! The closer even. it has that feel and energy to be the last track the dj plays in his set, and he is the last dj of the show, the sun is coming up, and this is the track! but if that was the case, i feel you would for surely wanna extend it to be much longer, have it keep growing, bring in some swelling washes, rises, and make the kids on drugs loose their minfs and never wanna go home!

  • (Ah the good old days!
And when I talk about the good old days, I made a living as a techno dj from 2001 - 2009, and I was playing 1 - 4 nights a week them years.)

  • okay so back to your tune. if your not looking to be the track of the night, which is always a rad approach casue not ever track can be the last track. some have to be strong supporters that build. and your tune could be that too!

  • it could go smaller! minimal as fuck if you wanted! the grooves are there, again process some of them sounds to make them all your own, and this could be a mini tech bumper!

  • i truly see too paths here. and where you are at is fine too. but for my liking, I always want original sounds I don't know iin my tunes.

I hope this helps, and pops your brain to move it the way you want it!

Thanks for your feedback. Much appreciated. I do agree that I could've taken it further for sure, the main reason I didn't is because this is a track for vocals to go over and I didn't want too many melodies clashing with the vocals, although I see your point that I could've went harder with the sounds. I've actually just released a version or a track my group fresh eire did on this track on my channel tonight. I'll follow you back now. Thanks again

i will check out this tune and yeah, i diidn't realize you had vocals coming for the tune! I am sure once you get them in, you will know what you need to do, as i would think the goal would to be to make it all work to support the vocal. that being said, i think you are sitting pretty! for sure ready for vocals! I am looking forward to hearing it with the vocal!! great job my pal! gonna check your groups tune now!

Awesome. I probably should have mentioned in the post that vocals were coming for it. Sorry about that, I clean forgot. Thanks again for taking the time to write such detailed feedback. I've tried my best to give feedback on yours also, but like I said in the feedback, I'm far from an expert producer so I could be wrong in my critique about the sub bass. It's just something I would have done with the track personally but everyone has their own sound

thanks for the feedback! i agree perhaps so more low end needs to be! thanks man!!! and no sorrys about the non mention of the vocal. was fun to discover and find it the way i did!

that's cool. I hope I didn't cause any offence by suggesting it needed a little more low end. I always feel really bad critiquing other peoples tracks when my own tracks are filled with mixing issues, but I always look for the positives much more than the negatives. Your track has basically no negatives in my mind other than a little low end needed. It is an awesome track.

heck no! i wanna hear what you hear. i agree with it! thank you my friend

This is a very catchy track! I like the melodies...for my personal taste they might be a bit 'simple'; I prefer my melodies often a little more complicated / varying. But I think the relatively simple melodies is what makes this track so catchy so actually that probably ends up being a good thing and a compliment :) I like the bass as well. The kick and the bass work well together, but somehow I feel like the kick doesn't sound quite as good on it's own. Might need a bit more depth, but that's personal taste. It could use some vocals for sure, and I just read in the comments that it's meant to have vocals eventually...I'd be very interested in how it turns out then!

Thanks :) The bassline is a lot different to what I'm used to so I had to put a lot of time into getting it right, I normally stick to more simple basslines but tried to switch it up for a change. I agree for sure the kick doesn't work quite as well by itself, I was just trying to add some variety to it so you notice the bassline more when it comes back in.

I don't know if I should be posting a track that's not related to the challenge in the comments but if you'd like to hear the version with vocals on it here's a soundcloud link: https://soundcloud.com/fresheiremusic/feel-alive-fresh-eire

Thanks again for taking the time to listen.

Thanks for sharing the vocal track! For some reason I was expecting female vocals, not sure why...but this works well too. It definitely does add more to the track. Good stuff!

Thanks for listening :)

Always a pleasure to listen...

I don't know if it's only me, but somehow the Hi-Hat beat between 00:37 and 00:54 sounds a bit dry combined with the rest of the tracks. Same for 1:31-1:48 and the next batch. I get used to it quickly.

Nice beat overall! Possible collaborations might further develop it to something exceptional.
There's a good potential for modifying it for a Sonic The Hedgehog remix.

Thanks for your feedback. I'll try make some edits to it next time I open the file and keep it in mind for future tracks. A sonic remix would be cool :)

I will not say much about technicals about this track but I will say what I feel.

So when I listen to this I imagine myself riding Cadillac in 1980 Miami and sunset is beautiful.

Something like this:

Great track, great feeling. Peacee

Awesome. Thanks so much! I'm glad you like it :)

Keep up bro :)

im following you as well!

i really like this melody, it expresses summer and happyness, good times indeed. the bassline fits really well. What I would have done is the use of the fx high whhoosh sound, the reversed crash. those can be really powerfull on giving more accent when used before a change. so i would have only used them there. but this track is really nice it gave me a good mood :)

Awesome. Glad you like it. Yea I do agree on the reverse cymbals now that I listen again. It works better on the song we did with lyrics to it but the instrumental by itself maybe could have done with less of them. Thanks for the feedback. Much respect to you!

p.s. i have having problems with #dsound I can't seem to load a tune? anybody got any advice?

Just listened there now. Overall I really enjoyed the track. It's got a cool chill vibe to it in my opinion.
That heavy deep bass/synth sounds awesome. The change around 5 minutes in works very well to bring the energy level up.
There's lot of variation throughout the track which keeps you interested so great job on that.
One of my only critiques is that I would have liked to have heard a little more sub bass in there, particularly towards the end after the change at 5 minutes in. I'm listening on my headphones and the low end is a little low on it in my opinion.
I'm far from an expert producer though so please take my feedback lightly as I might not be right in what I'm saying, it's just my opinion as a listener.
Overall though, great job. You can tell from listening that a lot of good work has gone into this.

As far as dsound goes, I've had no real problems with it although I have noticed it to be much slower at loading for playback than youtube or soundcloud are so I'm not sure what advice to give regarding it.

agreed! more low end indeed. i think if we have ears and listen to music, we are on some level pro enough! so yes thanks!!

No problem. Great work on the track. I look forward to hearing more of your music!

Here is my track. Good luck everyone!

Peace

yes really great mix! extremely strong in my ears. i like the vocal sample too. i think it all works. Perhaps it could have more variation in the lead synth. it would be nice to see it take the shape of a different melody at some point, and then come back to the main anthem. I also would lie to see you take this in a much more funk funky direction. there is a lot of great things bouncing in the mix, that i can hear it really funky and very very danceable. i mean it already is there for the dance indeed. i just wonder with it leaning towards the funk side, would it be a track that would make you dance no matter what? and all i am saying is just thoughts to build on top of what you got. but it is really great as is. i myself like more weird and odd electronic music. so on that note, i always enjoy and encourage us all to go farther and make them sounds all your own. no sound should ever sound like another. thats my dream. we are to grand and creative as humans , to creative, and to original. we all need to be more ourselves. it will make us all stand out from the rest. taking risk! ok now i am rambling on something that has nothing to do with your track! just my old rant! back to your tune! fucking great work! it is pro! you are pro! i think you could go far with this tune! maybe give it one more full session and see where it lands! great work. i hope this helps!

DAMN, this track is unreal. Those synth sounds are mad cool. Cant fault the mixing at all as far as my ears are able to tell. Plenty going on in the track all the way through to keep you listening. Overall, cant fault it at all. Badass track. Keep it up!

Thank you my friend. God bless:)

I'll submit this track of mine Grind. It represents what I'm all about

https://dsound.audio/#/@scottychams/grind-prod-jigga-beatz

The break at 1:10 was cleaaan. You have a new follower keep it up! I have some beats for you to spit over if you're down. Peace!

ey mad respect, let's do it! hit me up on any social media under @scottychams or @scottycham on instagram, and I'm [email protected]

So I don't really have any specific critique from a technical standpoint, but I do feel that some choices in samples and style could be changed.

The drums used themselves seem a tad industrial and I think using a more out there sample with some of them could be advantageous. The build up snare at around 1:05 could use a bit more punch to it and the kick that comes afterwards has too much reverb in my opinion. It's a spacey emotional piano that has this HUGE dance kick behind it and I think the contrast between the two could be toned down.

I'm also not really a fan of the moog bass that comes in around 0:30, but that's probably because I was expecting something less dancy in general given the intro. And I really like the intro! The pitched piano sounds super cool and the transition to pluck was well done.

All in all nice track, I just think it need's to dedicate itself more to a feeling or at least have the synths increase in power with the kick.

Hope this helped you somehow!

Absolutely agree! Thank you for taking the time to listen and review!

Fuck me with this tune! You are speaking my hears heart with this one! i love the production. the dirt in the sounds are wonderful. Lots and lots of real emotion! it feels like a great place. it reminds me of a Future Islands tune. there is much goodness! the Guru ending is wonderful. simple and strong. romantic. i almost want to write lyrics for it. i might. if i ind the time i will and send it to you. great tune. love it!

Really cool track. The intro got me curious as to what comes next and when the beat kicked in I was bouncing to it. It's got a very spacey feel to it. Great use of percussion. The only real critique I have is that the heavy synth is a little bit overpowering, although having said that it does add to the spacey feel of it so maybe that's a positive, and my headphones are a little bass heavy I think so it might be that making me think that either. Overall very nice track, nice melodies and the drums are awesome! Great work.

Thanks @fresheiremusic! Great to hear you appreciate the track. I can see why you'd say the synth might be a little overpowering. I think it's got to do with the way I 'mastered' the track, and in a way it's meant to be very present in the track. But I'm not a mastering expert by any means so it's always a bit of a challenge :) I always like positive comments about the drums in my tracks because I spend a lot of time on getting them sounding right!

Peace, this music is made in love. If you enjoy be sure to upvote x resteem x comment your thoughts! Im really into feedback. Be Love.
