Retro-fit : Conserving Forward.

Its always a dilemma in shaping the future. Especially in my field of architecture, such decision to conserve or to intervent always haunts us. There are no prefect system i mind you, thats why a choice to do must be based on a thorough thoughts and discussions.

To always choose to move forward full throttle is exhausting, and they are usually the factor of destructions (at least in most movies 😜). Look at how scary uncontrolled advancement of technology can be. iRobot, Wall-e, the Matrix to name a few are the extreme manifestation of what happen when we forget to keep being ‘human’.

But in the other hand, to stay as it is, to conserve everything by just staying as it is also not the best way to go. Yes this way will do the justice to keep a historical content and the origin, but as time goes by things will be obselete and will be forgotten.

The term retro-fit is the term in architecture where upgrading works of ‘face-lift’ is done to update the relevance of a certain function of an architectural bit whilst keeping the original identity of the built. The true ‘hero’ in an architectural built for me is the originality, the narratives or the initial intention which survives through years of changes who gives the identity of it.

Heres the timelapse process of the painting. :)

I recreated a scene overlooking our Malaysian Parliament building and the National Monument imagining how would it look like in 2050, retrofitting them into that context. :)
