Shorebreak Sessions #5: Undisclosed location, Western Australia + DOLPHIN ENCOUNTER!

in #shorebreaksessions6 years ago (edited)

Summer is over and we are officially in autumn here in Australia. For surfer's this can be the best time of year - the swell start's to roll in and the wind's generally stay light. The beautiful beaches here can crank, but it's all dependant on the sand bank's. This beach in particular has had good bank's over the summer and as the storm swell's shift the sand around there's a chance they will get even better.

This particular session was an early one, and after receiving the Knekt Trigger Grip in the post I was keen to get out at first light. After snapping some beautiful shot's as the sun started to rise, I got a surprise visit from some of the 'locals'!

Session details:

Location: Undisclosed, Western Australia
Time: 5.30am
Camera: GoPro Hero 3+ Black
Mode: Burst 30/2secs

Front or back, the crest of each ocean wave is as beautiful from either side.

The encounter

There's a lot of ocean life around this area, to see something in the water is a common occurrence. Of course with shark sightings every other week it's not always the most pleasant experience when you catch a fin out the corner of your eye...

After that quick glimpse it went under and I didn't see it again, until a few minutes later it came up about 2 meters to the side of me.

As I looked underwater there was a grey figure circling me - without a mask it's hard to see clearly and so I couldn't determine entirely what it was - although I was 90% sure it was a dolphin. I watched it's movements and took some footage, following it round until it swam away.

It wasn't until I got home and checked back the footage that we confirmed it was in fact a curious dolphin giving me the heeby jeeby's!

To be in touching distance is pretty special. I can't recall (knowingly) ever being this close to them.

There are always around and you can often see them surfing waves up and down the coast. It's quite ironic really, when you're out in the water and you do see a dolphin, there's a sense of safety and peace that comes over you, it's incredible.

If you enjoy this series keep an eye out this coming week for the first #shorebreaksessions video edit! Shoutout to @rossfletcher who has been killing it in #shorebreaksessions with some epic wave/surf photography from a recent cyclone. Check his stuff out!

Beautiful photos and can never be a greater feeling than surfing with dolphins. I just love moments when dolphins come to visit us surfing :) I can imagine the fear of thinking it is a shark, happened a few times to myself and I actually paddled to shore. I researched about the fins of dolphins and sharks. Dolphins have a distinct curved fin and the shark has a straight fin like a triangle. Probably hard to tell from a distance like in your case ;)

That's right man, 9/10 its a dolphin, and with sharks the ones your see are ok.

It's the ones you don't that get ya ;)

I surf at dusk a lot, when I am with other surfers it is ok. When I am by myself, I sometimes get a eery feeling, I get out ahaha. I feel safer in the early mornings for some reason ;) been a few attacks around the area of late, it is in the back of my mind. They tend to happen in the river systems more often.

Hello @youareyourowngod
