Internet Passwords Will Soon Be A History?

in #security6 years ago

Google, Microsoft, and Mozilla support the upcoming web standard WebAuthentication (WebAuthn), which brings a unified authentication method on the Internet and may replace login with passwords.

WebAuthn supports several ways of validating identity, such as fingerprints, USB tokens, biometrics, etc., and use what the user would have at that moment in internet device. It's a technology that brings support for USB, Bluetooth, and NFC to the browser. WebAuthn is being prepared by the FIDO Alliance and the W3C Consortium (World Wide Web Consortium) and is currently at CR (Candidate Recommendation). Working together, they collected and defined the functionalities and the way in which the standard will be introduced.

WebAuthn delivers a single library (API) that will be included in the browser and makes it easy to validate the identity. Depending on the support of all major browsers it's not fear that WebAuthn would not get to the browsers. Nowadays, the standard is almost a dead letter on paper if the big companies do not support them, and vice versa. If Google, Microsoft, Mozilla choose to integrate this feature into the browser, it becomes the de facto standard.

We are just waiting for Apple to declare whether it will support the new standard, but considering its participation in the working group, this is expected. The final standard can be expected next year.

The introduction of WebAuthn will not, of course, lead to immediate closure of passwords, but it will set up an infrastructure that will at least enable it on a basic level. WebAuthn, namely, contains several levels, ranging from biometric identity confirmation to tests that show that it's a man's computer and not a machine, but not who it is (some kind of CAPTCHA).
