Sustainable Development Goal 2 ( SDG2 ): ZERO HUNGER

in #sdg26 years ago

Dear all,

In my last post about SDGs, I wrote about SDG1. I shared my opinion and also did some online research to gather information for you.

For those who have not ever heard about SDGs or Sustainable Development Goals, I would like to say few lines about it first. Sustainable Development Goals came followed by Millennium Development Goals.

Sustainable Development goals

Sustainable Development goals are the combination of global 17 goals introduced by United Nation on 25 September 2015. There are 169 targets for the 17 SDGs with 304 indicators that will measure compliance. Many of we don't even know why this Sustainable Development Goals and what we can do for it. Today I would like to share my experience with SDG 2 today. In future posts, I will talk about other SDGs and this post will cover SDG Number two which is "ZERO HUNGER". You can read about SDG1 from here>>>.

ZERO HUNGER.

To end hunger, we need to join efforts to combat hunger and malnutrition by 2030. We need to focus on regions, especially Asia and Africa to end hunger, food insecurity and malnutrition for all which require continued efforts. Ending hunger and ensure food security also needs the sustainable food production. We need to achieve some targets to get the better result.

Targets need to be fillup to satisfy SDG2:

  • By 2030, end hunger and ensure access by all people, in particular, the poor and people in vulnerable situations, including infants, to safe, nutritious and sufficient food all year round.

  • By 2030, end all forms of malnutrition, including achieving, by 2025, the internationally agreed targets on stunting and wasting in children under 5 years of age, and address the nutritional needs of adolescent girls, pregnant and lactating women and older persons.

  • By 2030, double the agricultural productivity and incomes of small-scale food producers, in particular women, indigenous peoples, family farmers, pastoralists and fishers, including through secure and equal access to land, other productive resources and inputs, knowledge, financial services, markets and opportunities for value addition and non-farm employment.

  • By 2030, ensure sustainable food production systems and implement resilient agricultural practices that increase productivity and production, that help maintain ecosystems, that strengthen capacity for adaptation to climate change, extreme weather, drought, flooding and other disasters and that progressively improve land and soil quality.

  • By 2020, maintain the genetic diversity of seeds, cultivated plants and farmed and domesticated animals and their related wild species, including through soundly managed and diversified seed and plant banks at the national, regional and international levels, and promote access to and fair and equitable sharing of benefits arising from the utilization of genetic resources and associated traditional knowledge, as internationally agreed.
  • Increase investment, including through enhanced international cooperation, in rural infrastructure, agricultural research and extension services, technology development and plant and livestock gene banks in order to enhance agricultural productive capacity in developing countries, in particular least developed countries.

  • Correct and prevent trade restrictions and distortions in world agricultural markets, including through the parallel elimination of all forms of agricultural export subsidies and all export measures with equivalent effect, in accordance with the mandate of the Doha Development Round.

  • Adopt measures to ensure the proper functioning of food commodity markets and their derivatives and facilitate timely access to market information, including on food reserves, in order to help limit extreme food price volatility.

All above targets were introduced by UN. For more info.

Two third of hunger population in the world lives in Asia.

A mother was begging door to door with her children who seem autistic. The picture was taken by me on 1 April 2018. Do you think she can manage enough nutritious foods they need? eradicating poverty is also can ensure ending hunger. It is heart touching to see mother pulling her beloved son this way.

Bangladesh has more than 160 million population but land area are 66 times smaller than the United States. The limited land for cultivation made the situation mordifficultlt to get sustainable food production. So Bangladesh imported $6,594 million dollars agriculture goods from abroad in 2016.

Around 52 million children under 5 years of age worldwide suffered from low weight due to food shortage and/or disease in 2016. The report also shows some positive result which is also a hope for us. The percentage of undernourished people declined from 15% (2000-2002) to 11% (2014-2016) worldwide. UN and its members are continuously working to achieve the target and ensure food for every people.

Alarming Number of People Suffering from Hunger and Malnutrition

The increase of production in these countries is more important. Also the waste of foods due to lack of good transportantion is cause of high price of foods. You can read one of my prezi presentation about SDGs which I presented on 12 August 2016.

The lack of electricity also barriers of food production in rural areas. Thus, we need to eradicate energy poverty to reduce hunger and ensure we can produce sufficient food to meet present and future demand.

I look forward to knowing more from you and your thoughts. You can check some sources for own research.

Moneys used for war can solve world hunger in a moment. But we prefer killing each other than feeding each other.

You are right. If it could be possible we might see a better world.
