Human Thyroid Gland

Thyroid gland is present in neck, infront of the thyroid cartilage. It is a butterfly shaped gland having two lobes which are joined by an isthmus. It weighs about 25 to 30 gm.

Microscopically you can see- Round thyroid follicles containing pink gelatinous material. Each follicle is lined by cuboidal cells ...these follicles are imbedded in the connective tissue stroma which contains blood vessels, fibrous tissue and some parafollicular cells.

Function
Thyroid is one of the important endocrine gland of the body.
The follicular cells produce protein known as thyroglobulin which later forms Thyroid hormone(T3 and T4) after combination with Iodine(I2). The para follicular cells secrete a hormone known as Calcitonin.
Thyriod hormone(T3 & T4) helps in maintaining the basal metabolic rate of the body, it increases glucose and oxygen utilization by the cells and thus increases the energy production.
The parafollicular cells produce calcitonin. it regulates the blood calcium level and helps in maintaining bone calcium.

Thyroid dysfunction
Hyperthyroidism- It is a disorder in which there in increase in level of thyroid hormones, the patient will become restless, there will be increased sweating, heat intolerance, cardiovascular dysfunction.
Hypothyroidism - it is opposite of hyperthyroidism, patient will develop leg swelling, lethargy, there will be cold intolerance.

What is Goiter??
You all must have heard this term. it is the enlargement of thyroid gland due to deficiency of Iodine in diet. Due to def of iodine there will be hypothyroidism, so body tries to compensate it by increasing the proliferation of the gland. so there will be enlarged thyroid which can be seen externally as bulging midline growth in the neck.
To prevent it you should take iodized salt, or the foods which are supplemented with iodine.

Thank you! Thats it for today!

Great post and very informative thanks for sharing.

Thank you very much!

your post are always intuitive and educative. In my country, you dont buy non-iodized salt. This is to prevent goiter. Good post.

Thank you very much for your feedback.....yeah we should use iodized salt to provide sufficient amt of iodine the body needs.

great work , keep going !!!
