Are you up for a triple treat? Super Blue Blood Moon 2018

in #science6 years ago (edited)

It happens once in a blue moon.

We heard that phrase. That idiomatic expression means it RARELY HAPPENS, which probably isn’t. Apparently, that idiomatic expression coined has something to do with a celestial event.

Read on.

It is a a scientific phenomenon that happens when there are two full moons in the same calendar month. Mind you, the moon does not suddenly turn color blue even if it is called as the blue moon. But it once did actually. It turned blue in 1883. That was when Krakatoa, a volcano in Indonesia, erupted. Thus, the idiomatic expression.

Larger volcanic dust particles diffract red light, making the moon appear bluish.

We learned this in science class that eclipses happen when the shadow of either the sun (solar) or the moon (lunar) passes into the earth’s shadow. Lunar eclipses only happen two to four times a year. It is a spectacle to see the moon’s shadow slipping into the Earth’s shadow turning into a deep shade of red.

A total lunar eclipse takes place when the Earth comes between the Sun and the Moon and covers the Moon with its shadow. When this happens, the Moon can turn red, earning it the nickname of Blood Moon.

Such phenomenon happens when the moon’s perigee coincides with a full moon. In other words, it is when a full moon gets super close to the Earth. People will get to see the moon’s beauty closest - 14% larger and 30% brighter!

Imagine all those three celestial events happening all at the same time? Wow!

Undoubtedly, it is a very, very rare astronomical event. This generation is blessed to be able to witness it. It last happened 150 years ago! Thus, the rare confluence of these three celestial events has prompted many to call this eclipse a Super Blue Blood Moon.

So, what are you waiting for?

Get your telescopes ready!

This phenomenon will happen on the 31st!

Lunar eclipse will begin at 6:49 p.m. and reach its maximum at 9:29 p.m. Philippine time. It could be seen anywhere in the Philippines, hoping we get clear skies, says PAGASA.

This astronomical trifecta is also visible in other parts of the Asia, Russia, Australia, Middle East and other parts of western North America.

Are you excited for it?
