Trees of Stone

in #science6 years ago

Fossilized trees can be found all over the world. Trees that has retained its form but has solidified and has turned into petrified wood. Here in the Philippines there are some wood that has been recovered which dates back 750,000 years ago. Here are some of the petrified wood that were discovered in our country.

Trees of Stone

These specimens were recovered from Cagayan in the Northern island of Luzon, Philippines. These specimens was told that dates back 750,000 years ago but has no descriptions of the species of trees.

Normally organic matter decomposes but in the event that a tree is buried immediately by sediments or volcanic ash. Oxygen is deprived and along with ground water embedded with minerals it seeps into the wood and its cells are replaced by the minerals. The process of petrification is long and will take thousands and even millions of years to complete.

The specimens are out in the open people are allowed to touch it and examine closer. It is the first time I have come close to a petrified tree. I may have seen some before but I guess did not care much about it until now. It was hard like stone and I even tried to raise it up a bit with one hand to see if it budges. It is heavy and the looks of it is very deceiving.

4.JPG

Its features clearly shows that it is a part of a tree that might have broken off and then buried under layers of sediment. This fossil cannot be mistaken for a rock and looking at it, I say it maybe a part of the connecting branch from the tree trunk.

The color of the fossil is also determined by the type of mineral that seeps into the wood. There are different colors that ranges from black, blue, red, green, orange, yellow and a lot more. This sample has traces of brown and yellow which means that the ground water solution may have iron oxides.

Other mineral would give a petrified tree beautiful colors bursting bright colors which is like an artwork from nature. I would be sharing in the near future more specimens from around the world. For the meantime these are just some of the local specimens from our country.

These fossils are not worth much according to my research but there are some exotic ones that are polished. Those that are polished would fetch up to hundreds of dollars or even more. Some are turned into stools and table tops which are gorgeous.

It may just look like rocks for some but these trees has undergone millions of years of transformation. If you cannot wait millions of years. There has been a scientific discovery to petrify wood and the process would last up to five days. The wood is immersed in hydrochloric acid. After two days it is placed in a solution of titanium or silica for additional two days. It is then air dried and then set in a furnace with argon gas. The heating process will take two hours at 1400 degrees Celsius. It is then cooled down exposed to argon gas. The result is like a ceramic petrified wood.

These are just some of the discoveries from our country. Although there are more which are discovered for other parts of the Philippines. These on display were gifts to the museum for the public to be able to appreciate trees that has gone thru transformation for 750,000 years.

Thanks for joining me and I hope you join me again when I share other specimens. Specimens which are more exotic from all over the world.

Transformation is the only thing that is constant in this world. Have a good evening Steemians.

I remember when I travelled to Europe, it wasn't so often that you would see something made by humans that was older than 2000 years. But in nature, sometimes things can last a whole lot longer than that. Some really well preserved fossils, still looks like wood to me!

The wonders of nature. We can only imagine just what other wonders are buried deep within the earth. I gave it a couple of knocks and it was solid like a rock with the deceiving form of wood.

Petrified wood is amazing. Unfortunately when I went to a place where you could observe them, we where not allowed to take samples. Which makes sense, but was still sad. So now I have to perish the piece I bought at a mineral show :)

I wonder if there are places in the philippines where one is still allowed to collect them, or if they are under conservation protection as well.

There is not much places here where they are out in the open in nature. Probably if you ever stumbled on one, "Finders keepers" lol. With you bringing that up will research more about the sites here where they are found. Cheers!

Given their price at mineral shows, I bet that any place, where collecting them is not forbidden by law, will get scavenged pretty fast.
But if you find some place during your research, let me know. Always room on the bucket list for more exciting places to visit :)

No worries buddy will keep my eye out might as well join you too in the expedition if it happens.

I have never seen a museum or display of trees like this... how cool!
Just imagine ALL the history there.

There are a lot and it would take you the whole day just to check everything. I still have some more photos of exotic specimens from all over the world which will be very interesting. The colors of some of them are spectacular.

In some pictures it looks like a bone, in others it looks like a rock, so knowing all of these are actually old dead trees is surprising, especially because 750,000 is an insane amount of years, and one could think wood that old would be something like dust.

Thanks for sharing those pictures!

It is mind blowing seeing these trees. You are correct should be dust already but here they are still which could lead to more findings and discovery. With trees from 750,000 years ago other species of life surrounded it during that time waiting for discovery.

Wow, just wow! I think it is so amazing that we have these beautiful trees and wood remains around us! Just imagine what they have seen and withheld over the centuries!

Lol we think alike I am also imagining what they have seen during those times. Ancient civilization and life form. Must be great if old specimens like these would open up a window for us and see life during that time. That would answer a lot of questions and could re tell history. Maybe I watch too much sci fi movies lol.

This is the newly opened national museum? I saw this on the news! I've never seen tree fossils. The first pic looks like a dinosaur's head or I'm just imagining things. Lol

Yes just opened some time last month. The third and fourth floors are still empty though but there there are so much stuff to see already. I did a post two Sundays ago if you'd like to check National Museum of Natural History

Yes, you have tons of lovely photos inside the museum! I'm gonna visit it when the crowd dies down. Usually people flock in when it's still new.

naka panuod ako ng video last 2 weeks ago why it happens.. for example any thing that are exposed or submerge in the water. And that body of water has high mineral content.. it will turn any object transforming into stone..
Im not sure if that things the same what happened to that fossil..

Yep that's what it is buried and exposed to ground water mineral solution and after a million years. Boom petrified!

Really cool. Amazing to see the textures and colours found in nature. Thanks for sharing :)

You should see the ones with different colors which are amazing.
