Biomass as an alternative to petroleum
We're winning the battle against fossil fuels by means of clean energy but we are winning this battle too slowly, in the electricity sector the contribution of these renewable energies is having enough visibility but in other industries such as the manufacture of chemical products still depends excessively on petroleum.
Everything practically comes out of petroleum by means of different processes to which it is subjected. Through these processes the aim is to separate it into simpler components that are easier to use in industry.
Basically, petroleum is nothing more than a mixture, complex of course, of carbon, hydrogen and oxygen atoms together with other components to a lesser extent such as sulphur, nitrogen and various metals.
Analyzing the biomass we can conclude that it's also a mixture of carbon, hydrogen and oxygen atoms along with other minority components such as metals, sulfur and nitrogen. Practically the same components as petroleum, so...
Why don't we use biomass instead of petroleum?
Well, there are differences in composition. They're composed of practically the same atoms but differ in the percentage of these atoms. In petroleum, carbon is more abundant while in biomass, oxygen is much more abundant.
Why is it so hard to use biomass instead of petroleum?
Well, I'm sure you can figure out why. The main reason is called petroleum industry. This lobby isn't prepared to replace petroleum with another source of energy that doesn't generate the dividends that petroleum generates for them. The money trail usually gives the right answer.
But it's not all the lobbies' fault, it's also a technical problem. Biorefineries for distilling biomass aren't yet well adapted in some places and others have a lot of technology to implement. Another disadvantage is that the petroleum industry is 100 years ahead of the biomass industry and the petroleum industry has the advantage that its refinement is virtually the same, as these are standardized processes worldwide that vary very little from one place to another.
