How The School System Lets The Individual Down

in #school5 years ago

When a child spends several years going through the school system, their individuality can be easily suppressed in many ways.

Schools don't teach critical thinking skills, nor do they achieve much in preparing kids for the real world. Children are taught with a focus on what to think and not how to think while going through the system. Learning is only acceptable from pre-approved sources and group-think is prioritized rather than individual creativity and curiosity.

Could it be because this might threaten obedience?...

Some have suggested that promoting critical thinking might be "too disruptive" to the learning process. But the individual is the one to suffer when their natural curiosity and interests are suppressed.

Schools today don't encourage children to explore their own interests, they're expected to submit to and keep up with a specific curriculum. They are also expected to learn at the same pace as everyone else. The focus throughout the learning process clearly seems to be more centered on memorization and less on learning and developing critical thinking skills.

A variety of educators have suggested that many students graduating today still struggle to think critically.

Many students are bored in class and their creativity is hindered because of the strict regime that involves frequent testing and cramming for various subjects. The present day factory farming model of education erodes the intrinsic motivation to learn. Researchers have suggested that children learn best when their natural curiosity is aligned with the teaching; when they're stimulated and interested in what they are learning about.

Not only is the individual forced to conform to the strict curriculum of the school system but they are also pressured to conform to the group, other students at school. They're encouraged to dress, act, and speak in a way that blends in so that they can be accepted by others.

Success is also recognized in only one way and that's through good grades. But while students might spend a great deal of time prepping for exam, they can neglect to prepare themselves for the real world in the meantime. It also teaches that if you don't get good grades that you cannot become successful in life, or that you aren't intelligent, but many individuals have proven that assumption to be wrong. Good grades aren't everything and they might come at the expense of individuality and the ability to think more critically.

That is putting it very mildly.

I couldn't write so nicely about the govern-cement light-security-prison indoctrination systems.

I would disagree that good grades aren't the only measure.
Dating the quarterback or cheerleader is the most important thing.

Lets say that we have a teacher 110 IQ
and we have a student 160 IQ.
At what point does the teacher completely fail at being able to teach the student?

And yes, i have stumped college professors with questions, in their field, from the text book. So, i would really like some idea of answering this question.

I feel that, if allowed to progress as fast as they are capable, the student would exhaust the teacher's knowledge somewhere between grade 6 and 9. Faster if the student likes math.

I have to agree with everything in there. There are positives to the system but it seems the kids are sentenced to minimum security organizational behaviour camps run by union workers. How good can that be.

I am a little concerned lately by the use of tablets. They are a wonderful tool when used the right way but HAVE to be changing the way kids solve problems. Why think and deduce and calculate and solve when you can just google it. Imagine never having to wonder about something.

That and they are being guided by teachers who are not experts in the optimal use of the technology in curriculums thrown together and erroring their way to success on growing minds that will stay that way.

I have a couple headed into high school and don’t look forward to having to go through it all again when I did my time years ago.

Could it be because this might threaten obedience?

It is known a long ago: State Education system is a repressive one. It is not meant to give an individual freedom of thinking, but to create a person conformed to the system.

I totally agree with you on the education system which does only and only concentrate on the grades which does not mean that the child is prepared for the real world, which most of them are not after they graduate.
School system is created to make all the students the same and think the same, but we all know that we all learn and thing differently and that is not really supported by our education system, and like you said it steels the kids individuality and their way of thinking.

Hello @doitvoluntarily, thank you for sharing this creative work! We just stopped by to say that you've been upvoted by the @creativecrypto magazine. The Creative Crypto is all about art on the blockchain and learning from creatives like you. Looking forward to crossing paths again soon. Steem on!

School system we have today is basically designed to prepare work force to drive the giant economic engine that world has become. It is reminiscent of industrial revolution. However I think as world will grow, it will be realized that economics is not everything and other aspects of life also need nurturing.

Hi doitvoluntarily, yes spot on because having been in Education there are a percentage of kids that the system lets down badly. Most children adapt and get on with it. But, on the other hand there are some very good teachers who do a fabulous job showing that they care for the children and are interested in them. This is the basis of feeling good which leads to good self-worth and continued striving. I have a lot to say when it comes to schools and education. Thank you for your thought provoking post.
