Book of the Week: Daisy’s Vintage Cornish Camper Van by Ali McNamara

in #review6 years ago

Morning Steemians!

How is everyone this fine Tuesday? As a newbie (I only started here last Friday) I’m still getting the feel for the kind of content I’m keen to post, and eventually, as I mentioned in my IntroduceYourself post, I hope to get a regular daily posting schedule up and running, where I touch on different topics throughout the week, to include art and art tutorials, ulogs, adventure posts, posts on writing tips and writing progress… and also posts about books. And that’s what I’m posting today - my first ever book of the week post.

What’s This Post About? Some Advice on Affiliate Links Please…

Elsewhere on the interwebs, I run a book blog with news, reviews and interviews from across the publishing sector, but here, I’d like to keep my weekly book posts relatively simple and highlight the book that I’m reading at the time of writing and give a bit of a read-in-progress review. One question I have for the old-hands here - are affiliate links acceptable here on Steemit? On my other blog, I like to link through to the book on Amazon so that my readers can easily access more information and grab a copy of the book if they’re interested. For this I usually use an affiliate link - but I won’t do that here until I know if I’m allowed. The link below will just be a plain old Amazon one.

Book of the Week: Daisy’s Vintage Cornish Camper Van by Ali McNamara

This week’s book is a real love of a read - and just what I am in the need of at the moment. It’s the gentle tale of Ana as she struggles to overcome the great grief of losing her best friend, Daisy. Far from being a sad read, so far this book focuses on the positive changes that Daisy has managed to make Ana undertake after she’s passed away, by leaving her her dilapidated old VW camper van, forcing her on a pilgrimage to St. Felix in Cornwall to get it renovated.

Whilst rooting around in the van, a bunch of postcards spanning decades are discovered. They’ve been written but never sent- and tell one side of a beautiful love story, and Ana is keen to try and find the original author and return the cards.

I’m about 2 thirds through at the moment, and trust me, it’s not just the camper van that’s getting renovated- Ana’s whole life is getting turned around… and she’s found a couple of other broken souls to bring along with her on the journey too.

There’s a magical edge to Ali’s writing and something mystical about the town of St. Felix that’s giving me those little goose-bump moments as I’m reading. I’d say this is the perfect book for you if you’re looking for an easy summer read with a great story and have a bit of a thing for little historical mysteries being investigated (and hopefully solved- but I don’t know about that bit yet!

Back of the Book Blurb:

Welcome to the gorgeous Cornish town of St Felix, where there's magic in the air...

When Ana inherits a broken-down camper van from her best friend, she takes the chance for a quick trip to Cornwall - some sea air and fish and chips on the beach is just the tonic she needs.

But St Felix has bigger plans for Ana. She discovers a series of unsent postcards, dating back to the 1950s, hidden in the upholstery of the van. Ana knows that it's a sign: she'll make sure that the messages reach the person that they were meant for. And as the broken-down van is restored to gleaming health, so Ana begins to find her way back to happiness.

Vintage! I am sooo into it. Love the images you introduce. You have a vigorous style that makes me blow the dust off of my sneakers and go on a long trip somewhere I have never been. Beautiful way of making people get out of their comfort. Nice job done! It was a complete pleasure reading this post.

Me too... I particularly love 40s and 50s style. My sister is heavily into war-time and a friend of mine is all about the 80s - we're a weird mix! This is a great read - I recommend it if you're into something a bit magical. If you're a vintage lover, I'd also recommend "The Vintage Guide To Love And Romance" by Kirsty Greenwood- fab novel!
